The show this year will be broadcast from the Canyons at Destiny USA on the second level in front of Cantina Laredo. I don’t know if they will take questions from the audience there but they say you can watch the show whereas when it was a t a restaurant, their table tended to be in a secluded location. You can call in questions at 1-888-7-Go Cuse (746-2873) or, locally 424-8599. You can also send them in advance at this site:

(I do both so they can be prepared to give me an informed, reasoned answer.) You can also contact them via Twitter (@SUSportsNetwork) using #AskShafe. The football show is an hour in duration, (Coach Boeheim’s basketball show is usually 2 hours).
They’ve actually been kind enough to post a schedule in advance:
The show will air at 7 pm on the following dates:
Wednesday, Aug. 27
Thursday, Sept. 11
Thursday, Sept. 18
Thursday, Sept. 25
Wednesday, Oct. 1
Thursday, Oct. 9
Thursday, Oct. 16
Thursday, Oct. 23
Thursday, Oct. 30
Thursday, Nov. 6
Thursday, Nov. 13
Wednesday, Nov. 26
The show can be heard in Syracuse on AM 1260 or FM 97.7.
My Question
“Coach, last year our leading receiver, Ashton Broyld, never scored in 13 games. The last time that happened was forty years before that, Ben Schwartzwalder’s last season when we lost our first 8 games, were declared by a national publication to be the #1 team on their “bottom ten” and wound up 2-9. And the pass was more important to a team’s offense in 2013 than in 1973. There’s been a lot of flux at the receiver position this fall, with players leaving, injuries, position switches, etc. I wonder if you could go through the players in the receiving corps and describe their strengths and weaknesses, as well as the state of their health and what they might be able to do for us this season. Thank you.”
The Show
Coach complained of “a major echo in his headset”, (I hope it was in his headset). They said that for future shows they will have chairs for people to sit in and they will take questions from the audience. They are on the second level, right in front of Cantina Laredo, who “provided tonight’s spread”. Coach said “by developing a relationship with Destiny, it allows us to take it to the next level with the community.”
I called in my question. Coach said that Broyld has “great size”, that Estime “came on strong at the end of the year” and that “they’ll get a lot of action from the slot position. Then there are some young guys who have impressed. Steve Ismael is battling Jarrod West for time. Jamal Custis creates a lot of match-up problems for linebackers. You’ll see a lot of him on Friday. But we mustn’t forget Quinta Funderburk and Adrian Fleming. They’ve really stepped up their game. “ So apparently Ismael and Custis will be part of the game plan from the outset.
Matt asked what the biggest transition from practice to actual game action is. “The biggest adjustment is the kicking game. It’s not the smartest thing to go live on kickoff teams. Then there’s adjusting to the cadence of the other team after hearing their own team’s cadence all through practice. The timing of their blitzes depends on it.
Coach said they focused on developing new leadership after “strong individuals” like Jay Bromley, Mackey McPherson, Jerome Smith and Marquis Spruill graduated. They emphasized helping other plays, setting a good example, etc.
They talked about the running game and the first named mentioned was Adonis Ameen-Moore who the coach said would replace Jerome Smith as their “between the tackles” runner . Prince Tyson Gulley was one of those named captain but “we hope to roll in other guys, too”, such as McFarlane and Morris. But coach praised Erv Phillips as being “really explosive” and said we could expect to see a lot of him, especially in the kicking game “at first”. That gives us three true freshman they apparently intend to use, even over more experienced players. And I got the impression we would see Phillips and Estime on kick-offs, a dynamite combination. Coach said “The best athletes are former running backs and option quarterbacks” and said that they are so versatile you can move them around to other positons.
“The first two years we had 9-10 linebackers on scholarship and we found you can’t do it that way. Now we have 13-14.” He feels having that many linebackers on the roster will improve the kick and punt coverage. They may also get some big safeties out of it.
They talked about the kicking game. Poor Ross Krautman “never came around” and had to quit. Cole Murphy, from California, will take over the kick-off duties, allowing Ryan Norton to concentrate on the place kicking and Riley Dixon on the punting. They talked about long snapper Sam Rogers impressing people so much that he was named a co-captain.
They talked about Villanova and their quarterback John Robertson, “A true dual threat quarterback” who ran for 1400 yards last year. Coach said they keep track and 42% of his yards came on scrambles. Matt Park suggested that those SU linebackers are “licking their chops” to get a chance to hit Robertson but Robertson is 6-1, 212 and “can take a licking”. Coach said that the Wildcats will be “the best FCS team we’ve seen in here for a long time. They have a great scheme and are very entertaining. We’ll try to make them less entertaining. Our guys will have to train their eyes where they’re supposed to be.
After some other business, including holding a drawing for game tickets, (which were distributed by Floyd Little), Jim in Syracuse asked about the recruiting class. Coach couldn’t comment on specifics but stressed the need to “keep them in the fold” until February and “get a head start on 2016”.
He ended by saying “I can’t wait to put this team on the field for this community. Come on out and have a blast!”
