5 yrs ago or so coming in talking about fast paced offense and we still really havent seen it. Fits and sputters under Eric but still never really any consistent speed.. Was it a talent thing, a conditioning thing, a depth thing?

I know not ever having a consistent running game has hindered most of it but i really though we would be trying to run plays at pace more often, Sad that we have really been decent most of the time at getting into the 3rd down positions this style of offense should be great at. Spreading the D out and 3rd and shorts should lead to easy first downs running. But even 3rd and 1s have been a struggle.

Still some record breaking WR numbers with an Oline that has had issues, no top NFL WRs, and inconsistent QB play makes you wonder what we would do with just pretty good oline play.

If the oline would just figure out how to get push on key running downs you could survive the poor blocking and sacks on the other plays.

Maybe it feels that way, and I’m sure DFB wants to go even faster, but we ranked #8, 3, 1 the last three years in offensive plays per game.

I can’t find the stat for time between snaps right now but I know I’ve seen it before and we were top10 each of the last 3 years in that stat too.

I know common perception on this board is that we run up to the line and then look around for the play, but even with those “pauses” we are still faster than almost everyone else

you can get a ton of plays if your D is bad too. And its not perception if you cant make 3rd downs count. The point is that yes we are running plays and scoring some pts, but in no way are we running the offense as we want too.. And thats straight from the coaches

I think it's a combo of two big things:

1. OL play. Baylor had access to better linemen and could really move people to gash in the running game. We've not been able to run effectively from the RB position. I think it would unlock the O, like ED did when he was healthy.

2. The system got figured out a bit. Defenses adjusted enough and figured out enough that we needed to shift some of the core stuff. I think it can still work, but will require some creativity. Hope Sterling can bring that.

I don’t see how anyone can reasonably expect more offense, or a faster pace, than we had in 2018 with a healthy Dungey in a 10 win season. Our OL was good (not saying great) with Conway & Martin at the tackle spots. Dungey converted a lot of 3rd downs with his legs.

if your point is about having problems with 3rd down conversions through a strong push from the OL and a traditional RB, I agree. It isn’t a matter of pace, but physicality of the line, and having a QB who can help get tough yards as a counter.

All teams have to do now is fake a cramp
I’d rather hudl more than not , look your teammates in the eye or point out a quick tip or something in the huddle . I’m not saying to abandon the fast pace but adjust . If our D is getting gashed we need to take our time Especially if our O line stinks again ( which it may be good ) it all goes hand in hand .
I’ve seen 2017 bad line 2018 decent 2019 terrible 2020 ?

The sell when dino got here was that the O would compliment the T2. Anticipating that the O would need a blow so the bend but HOPEFULLY not break theory of the T2 was complimentary to the O style. Didn't work as the T2 doesn't work at the college level needing elite rushers and corners. Then, dinos calling card was speed of snaps on O. He was cocky and would often add that the plays run will be even speedier even when the media was complimentary of the speed of the O. Then, dino realized it was worth slowing things down and sacrificing speed in favor of better execution. No talk of "fast" the last few years as QBs, oline, and wrs have not developed at the rate the coaches hoped. Thought the T2 was garbage from day 1 and hopefully the 3-3-5 is better. Regardless, the O needs to get better at the skill positions and yes, the oline. ED never had good OL play but he masked the deficiency.

For the record, since Dino has been at Syracuse, SU has finished 7th, 1st, 2nd and 4th in the country in plays per game. I am pretty sure during those 4 years, SU has averaged more plays overall than any other school i the country.

Not bad.

If speed translates to wins, then great. Otherwise, it's a meaningless stat in my opinion.

It can. It sometimes does.

I’d point to the VaTech upset win as proof.
Their D was gassed at the end of that game.

But that was a few years ago.
Since many teams now run some variant of HUNH offense, it’s not as much of a difference maker anymore.
