Pete Sala thinks the home field advantage is going to be even better. I believe he has a degree from UMass in landscaping so he might not be a preeminent expert in acoustics. https://www.syracuse.com/orangesports/2019/04/carrier-dome-roof-renovation-will-improve-natural-lighting-a-little-bit.html It has been reported that the new roof will be on average 5 to 10 feet higher than the old one. We know the new roof will be 29 feet higher than the old roof. However, those measurements are to the top of the roof. The new roof is going to be a lot thicker than the old one. Not sure how thick the hard shell part will be but I think a conservative guess would be 5 or 10 feet. So the interior part of the new roof should be about the same distance than the old one, at least for the hard shell part. The PTFE part should be quite a bit further away...up to 29 feet at the apex. But there will be a very large scoreboard considerably closer to the stands blocking and reflecting sound. The material of the new roof is essentially the same as the old roof for the PTFE part. I would think that would be a wash. Not 100% sure what the material is that will comprise the inner layer of the hard shell. From the one drawing we have, it looks like a fabric covering will be used. Probably similar acoustic properties to the inner layer the old roof featured for most of the panels. Though I would guess all the steel in the hard shell might bounce more bounce than a couple of layers of fabric. I am assuming Pfeiffer will use their standard opaque tiles as the outer layer of the roof until someone tells me otherwise. That might bounce more sound too. Sala mentioned in another article that there will be insulation in the hard shell part of the roof. He said it had to be there. I assume it is needed to keep heat in during the winter and keep cool air in during the summer. That Insulation will surely serve to absorb sound and worsen the noise level. My guess is that all the differences end up pretty much offsetting each other and the building ends up being about as noisy as it was before.
