Looking back to February 25th when the Orangemen took on the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Syracuse was in it's worst stretch of the season.

Starting with a 57-46 home loss to Georgetown, the 74-71 loss at Marquette, the 58-53 home loss to Louisville, sprinkled in was our 78-57 Senior Night 6 PM demolition of DePaul prior to the Monster Truck Jam followed by the tipping point, humiliation at the Verizon Center to the Hoyas 39-61.

In that loss to Marquette where they made 29 of 35 free throws (82.9%) SU got to the line just 7 times, converting on 5 chances. Six SU players dominated the playing time, the bench scoring only 25 points versus 55 for the Golden Eagles. Triche fouled out & Southerland played with 4 fouls. Marquette had one player with 3 fouls & two with 2.

Points in the paint were pretty equal with SU having a 30-24 edge. We also had the advantage in fast break points, 16-8. Syracuse was out rebounded 33-27. CJ was called for a hanging on the rim technical too. The turnovers were split with each team committing 12.

Gardner scored a career high 26 points against SU

Besides the free throw disparity the other hugest factor in the loss was our inability to contain massive Davante Gardner. The round mound was 7 for 7 from the floor bullying his way to the basket at will and grabbing 8 big rebounds. What will the staff come up with to neutralize the big fella this time around?

Junior Cadougan and Jamil Wilson were the only other double figure scorers for Marquette, each netting 12 points.

With 3 minutes 20 seconds left in the first half Syracuse cruised to a 27-16 lead, in what would be it's largest of the game. As in many SU games of the past they let their guard down and allowed MU to whittle the lead down to 32-29 at the half.

After SU went up 27-16 Gardner turned the ball over. Here was a chance to pad the lead but MCW missed a three with 2:36 left. From that point SU was outscored 13-5.

In the second half Brandon Triche made a layup with 9:06 left to make it 53-46 Syracuse. That was our second largest lead of the half.

Back to back turnovers, first by Brandon at 8:05 then by Jerami at 7:38 lead to missed opportunities to make separation. Sprinkled in between was a foul by Grant that lead to a free throw make by Taylor to reduce the lead to 6 points.

Todd Mayo made a three off the Grant turnover to get Marquette back in the game at 53-50 with 7:21 left.

It was at 5:05 when the Golden Eagles took the lead for good on a jumper in the paint by Gardner making it 56-55. Over the last 5 minutes they would stretch out the lead by as much as 8 points.

The best SU could do was with 2 seconds left MCW making a three pointer closing the gap to 73-71.

In conclusion, Syracuse must do better on the boards, foul less, get more prodution out of the bench and figure out a way to defend Gardner.

I'm sure the brain trusts on the Syracuse coaching staff are working on such a plan to make all of the negatives into positives this time around. If they are successful then we're looking at SU's fifth final four since 1975 and a trip to Atlanta on April 6 to play Florida, FGCU, Kansas or Michigan in the Georgia Dome for all the marbles.

I'm hoping for some Keita flops to slow him down.

I am hoping for a few minutes from DC to show Marquette that when you run into DC you bounce off.
That fing bowling ball got away with a lot of charges in our last game as he just pushed Keita and Rak out of the way.
Put Dc in to squat on him.

Louisville, Oregon, Michigan State, Duke, Wichita State or Ohio State might object. ;)
