once we have some answers for that it starts to get better. As many runs as we got blocked on we also had a ton with 1-2-3 guys in the right spot and the RB made nothing into 3-4 and that kept the chains in good spots for BC. Guys who are a bit bigger help that..

Maybe that's because it is more adapted to be a pass defense which we needed badly. Hopefully we can recruit players that will be more in tune with this defense down the road.

we got blown off the ball, BC had 3rd and short all game because we gave up 5,6 and 7 yards on 1st and 10. We can't match up physically with anybody in the ACC. Pretty discouraging 5 years into Babers tenure

Unfortunately, there is a lot of truth to this. We get physically dominated at the point of attack and then don't have a lot of finishers at the LB level. At least you can point to youth for the LBs. The DL has a lot of Srs and Jrs playing.

The DT position for 2021 looks like a major roster issue to me, even if some of these guys return. This should be a key area to target for transfers.

The front 3 are getting destroyed. RBs getting to second level untouched at full velocity. Making LBs make first contact and then tackle by secondary way too often. No wonder why we have so many injuries. Better off playing 4 up front or 4LBs or keep 335 but have someone bigger like Richards play rover. The current D is a slow death. Cant win 2 and short all game. Despite all that they only gave up 16 points so game could have been won with slightly more offensive production. Didn't see a lot of offensive creativity out there today on offense but JM looks very promising and lots of potential. Better days ahead...in a few years

I feel like we need more movement. We line up DL and LBs straight up over their OL and just get pushed back. The OL know who they have to block and where to go. Instead of a 5-6 man front I rather a 3-3 stack with either more DL slants or LBs run blitzing with misdirection. At least the OL won't quite know where our guys will be going. Feels like we are just lining up over them and hoping to win mano a mano which we won't win many of those battles.

run the ball, stop the run

a story as old as time

I kinda felt like we gave up on the run today. Just seemed like it should have been a bigger part of the game plan. Especially since we were always in striking distance.

Considering that BC could run the ball for 6 yards at will all day, it’s pretty amazing that we only gave up 1 TD. And that on a fairly miraculous catch after our hard charging DE was held.

This 3-3-5 almost feels like it needs three nose tackles for the front 3.

( WANTED ) 2 ( DT ) portal transfers for SU. team football must be able to start ( IMMEDIATELY )

At times they played a even front 4 with 1 and 3 techs and had the same issues. The scheme gives them mutliple ways to try to stop the opponents. At some point people have to realize that its not the scheme its the players getting pushed around in it. Every scheme has weakness and areas you can expose. We still have a lot of issues with fits and how we take on and get off blocks. We look like a defense that is young in areas and is still learning how to play together in it. There's alot more stuff you can do in this scheme that they are not doing. I think they feel the players are not ready for it.

Also, RB's are running through arm tackles and when we do square up on them they get a extra 2 or 3 yards after contact on us. If we stayed in a 4 man front it would be the same results or worse. There were times when we had 5, 6 and 7 on the LOS. Thats not always the answer either. It just makes it easier to seal in or kick out the LB's. Now your second level defenders are true freshman safties that shouldnt be playing right now.

SU commited to this scheme. Its helps alot if the offense can sustain drives and score some points. On top of that, you can't start abandoning your scheme and putting players in positions they have no business playing. Those are positions they recruit specifically for. This is not a one year fix. Gonna take time.

We are giving 25 to more than 50 pounds per guy in the trenches. Until we add size we will continue to be dominated.

Yeah, we will always be undersized on the DL in this scheme. Unless you find some atheltic studs that are 300 pounds and move like LB's. We just dont normally get those guys. The 4 and 5 stars guys go to the factories.

All good points. I sort of look at it like shifting chairs on the deck of the Titanic. Anyway you slice it the ship is sinking lol

Haha good analogy. I am frustrated watching the defense but what helps me feel better is knowing that it will improve at some point. Not going to improve much in season but they will make progress throughout the off season. Grabbing a couple transfers can help too.

They are out there. Liberty added a few. We should be able to land a couple given the ability to offer pt. What did you think of 45? Kid got some run

Can't really make a opinion on him yet.I will have to look at him more when I re watch the game later on.

2 5th year seniors and one 4th year guy on the DL... one more year won’t help those guys. They are who they are.

I agree to a certain extent but another year of learning and playing in a new scheme can improve their productivity within it. I also, think we should go after a transfer or Juco kid that better fits the system too.

run the ball, stop the run

Terrible teams can't run or stop the run but run and stop the run didn't make you any good

You have to have some fundamentals but once you're sound, pass unless they beg you to run

The chorus of "this defense is going to take time" was loud when we hired the new DC. We missed on spring camp and had a rough fall camp. I'd hold off on any definitive judgments for a while.

The one time I saw him in the 1st half he got blown up. He looked like a walkon DL. Maybe a little bigger than Rudy.

Obviously improvement is needed but any unit on our D is way behind most if not all of the units on offense, in terms of concern.
