At times they played a even front 4 with 1 and 3 techs and had the same issues. The scheme gives them mutliple ways to try to stop the opponents. At some point people have to realize that its not the scheme its the players getting pushed around in it. Every scheme has weakness and areas you can expose. We still have a lot of issues with fits and how we take on and get off blocks. We look like a defense that is young in areas and his still learning how to play together in it. There's alot more stuff you can do in this scheme that they are not doing. I think they feel the players are not ready for it.
Also, RB's are running through arm tackles and when we do square up on them they get a extra 2 or 3 yards after contact on us. If we stayed in a 4 man front it would be the same results or worse. There were times when we had 5, 6 and 7 on the LOS. Thats not always the answer either. It just makes it easier to seal in or kick out the LB's. Now your second level defenders are true freshman safties that shouldnt be playing right now.
SU commited to this scheme. Its helps alot if the offense can sustain drives and score some points. On top of that, we can't start abandoning your schme and putting players in positions they have no business playing. Those are positions they recruit specifically for. This is not a one year fix. Gonna take time.
