I don't see how the article is anything that approaches fair. And I don't know where you begin with what a disservice this is to his university, fellow students, and broader community. Out of 24 paragraphs of copy, there are four sentences that struggle to point out anything positive about Babers relative performance in recruiting New York. His reception and positive regard by the other 11 coaches that were polled is only inferred. Yet 3 coaches are quoted at length, all of them discontent with some aspect of Babers perceived efforts (or lack thereof) focused on their programs. The assertion by these coaches that viable D1 talent has been overlooked or neglected by Babers is never vetted or qualified. Did these prospects find interest from other programs? Are they contributing at a D1 program today? No mention is made of the fact that few programs recruit D1 players from New York because there are relatively none. Less than 2% of all D1 recruits between 2008 and 2013 were from New York. Yet during the same period nearly 14% of all recruits were from Florida. Of all states Florida is second only to Texas for the most number of D1 recruits, a fact that may help explain the high number of Florida recruits in any class, let alone those of Babers. When it comes to blue chip prospects, those with a perceived high likelihood of playing competitively at a D1 program, the numbers are even more skewed. From 2013 to 2017 there were a total of 6 blue chip prospects from New York. From Florida during the same time period? 226. None of this is mentioned. Instead the account of a coach disgruntled over the lack of playing time of one his former players, is recounted in a most memorable way. That is fair journalism? No mention is made of what a break through success the current 2017 class represents for recruiting New York, of the top 6 New York prospects in 2017, 3 of them are committed to Syracuse. Given recent program history, that is an unprecedented success. Of the New York prospects that are mentioned in the article, that ended up committing to Ohio State, no mention is made of the fact that Jeremy Ruckert and Matt Jones are the two highest rated prospects in the 2018 class or that they both held Syracuse offers and were actively recruited. No mention is made that another highly rated New York recruit, Aron Cruikshank, was heavily recruited by Babers and staff, only to be passed over for Wisconsin. Babers has pursued the most coveted New York recruits, but the decision to stay home is not a one way street.
