The DI Council approved changes to transfer windows in all sports to 45 days

Some changes are coming to the portal rules.

This time around, it reduces the number of days that student athlete can enter their name in the portal.

Is this window after the bowl season ends? I hate how players are transferring before the bowls are even played. You watch a team all year and then the bowl game feels like a spring game.

To be determined.

If you don't open the window until January, you'll have kids who have already made up their minds to transfer taking away practice reps from the kids who are staying.

Good point.

It's going to be interesting to see what dates the NCAA sets for the 30-day period that begins in December after the conference championship games.

If you start this 30-day window too early it could close before the Championship game on January 9th, which could potentially be disruptive to the teams involved in the championship game; players entering the portal before the championship game on January 9th. Sure some players who intend to transfer could take practice reps away from younger players as the team prepares for a bowl game, but closing too early could force players to enter the portal before their bowl games which, in my opinion, is bad for the bowl games (work all year to earn the right to go to a bowl game only to play said bowl game without some of your top players).

And you don't want to open the portal until after the conference championships on December 2nd.

If I were a coach, I would also want the portal to close before spring semester classes start at my school.
  • I would want to know who is leaving so I know which positions we need to fill with transfers or high school players.
    • Early signing for HS players in December 20 - 22.
    • Mid-year JC transfers; December 20 - January 15.
    • Traditional HS signing date is February 7th.
  • I also want to know who is in the portal and available before our spring classes start, so we can get a player who transfers to us in classes and in the program for spring football.
First day of classes for the spring semester at Syracuse is January 16th. Some schools on the quarter system start their winter quarter as early as January 3rd.

Below are a couple of important dates on the NCAA DI recruiting calendar.
  • Jan. 3-7, 2024: Quiet period for two- and four-year college transfer prospective student-athletes who intend to enroll midyear.
    • A quiet period is that period of time when it is permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts only on the member institution’s campus. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts or evaluations may be made during the quiet period.
  • Jan. 12 - Feb 3: Contact period.
    • A contact period is that period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations.
My guess is the transfer portal window will open on or around December 12th thru January 10th. This would open after the conference championship games (Dec 2), close after the NCAA Championship game (Jan 9), and allow players who do transfer to start the spring semester at their new school (Jan 16 at Syracuse), which also allows the player to be involved in the winter strength and conditioning programs and spring football at their new school.

I can see Syracuse being very involved in the portal moving forward to address needs (some created by current players leaving Syracuse via the portal and others with eligibility leaving early to pursue their dream of playing in the NFL).

Enjoy the ride.

You only need to put your name in the portal to allow other schools to openly recruit you. I could know right now I'm going to transfer and have 'my parents' contact schools I'm interested in.

I don't think it'll matter. Most guys that transfer in january know they want to before the bowl and will sit out regardless of when the portal officially opens.

Question: Can a player who transfers to a four-year DI school from a JC still transfer via the portal without having to sit out one year?

Originally, I thought that if a student-athlete completed his 2 years at the JuCo his move to a D1 school would not be considered a transfer and he would then still be able to hit the portal after his first year at the D1 school.

However, after reading the following page, I suspect that even in this scenario, the move to a D1 program is still considered a transfer. Hence, I don't believe he could subsequently use the transfer portal without sitting out a year.
