I’ve been asked to continue doing the summaries, even by people who listen to the podcasts. I may focus on the major points, rather than trying to record everything.
My Question(s) or Comments
“Coach, this is the third time at Syracuse in which you’ve coached a team after a bye week. Two years ago, we lost 54-0 to Clemson. Last year we almost beat Florida State. I looked at your records at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green and when you had at least 10 days to prepare for a game, you were 7-1. What’s the key to taking full advantage of a week off without the team losing its edge?”
The Show
(I sometimes re-arrange the comments so that statements made on the same subject are reported together, even if they came at different points of the show.)
Matt noted a slick jacket the coach was wearing, saying it was the sort of thing a guy in charge would wear. Coach Babers: “My wife picked it out for me.”
Matt said this was our first home game in four weeks. That’s means it’s been almost month since we won a game. He asked for a summary of UNC. DB: “They believe in running the ball and have four outstanding runners, much like Pittsburgh. They should have beaten California and Virginia Tech.” Matt noted that both teams have had a couple of games they should have won and didn’t. Dino said “Their record doesn’t reflect the strength of their team. They have a lot of guys we tried to recruit and they won the battle.”
I was able to get my question about the bye week in early. DB: “You get an early start in preparation for your opponent. You get to heal your “yowies” and come out fresh. But you haven’t been hitting for a while so there can be a tendency to start slow. We don’t want to give away a quarter or a half. So we did ‘live’ work with the team. A couple of guys got banged up but have a chance to play- I won’t say who they are.”
“”You really don’t want to have an opponent who’s had two weeks to prepare for you.” Matt pointed out that NC State the next week will be coming off their game against Clemson.
A Twitter comment said that both Clemson and Pitt used Syracuse’s hurry-up tactics against us. DB: “More and more teams have recognized the advantages. It’s the flavor of the month. You hardly see a huddle any more. You don’t have to hold hands before each play.“ Another comment was something about 8 to 9 yard gains and their importance in getting first downs. I didn’t quite get it but certainly couldn’t argue with it.
John in Baltimore wondered if Coach agreed that the defense had worn down last year and if rotating the back 7 would help. He also asked if he had interest in recruits that had recently recommitted from other eastern schools. Dino answered the second question first. “It depends if we were recruit the player before. If we don’t get a kid, we move on to the next guy on our list.” Regarding the first question: “We treat every game as a one game season. Right now our only objective is to beat North Carolina. Previously we had a lack of depth and in November we were playing guys who hadn’t started the season, guys who hadn’t played much. We don’t want to give up points while rotating players. That big run the Connecticut quarterback had was when we were rotating players. We had some young men in there for one play.
Matt noted that Kelly Bryant was seen on the UNC sideline and may be transferring there, although Arkansas is also a rumored destination.
Marty in Tampa wanted to know if the star rating a system for recruits is meaningful to coaches DB: “it’s a good way to keep fans interested. The young men who run these sites do look at the players and they do the best job they can but I prefer to rely on the people I’ve hired. Jimmy Garoppolo and Tony Romo were zero star players and they made big money in the NFL.”
Matt noted that the time of the NC State game is “on hold” pending their game against Clemson. If they win, it could be a night game.
Someone in the Pressroom Pub wondered how the defensive line can be made to hold up against the running game. Dino said they stressed conditioning over the break. “Don’t lose your lungs, your wind. But sometimes you’ve got to just hurt and leave it on the field. Win or lose you’re gonna hurt.”
They discussed the Tar Heel’s loss to the Hokies, where they had fumbled at the goal line in the fourth quarter when it looked like they were going to seal the game up. Coach Babers said that one of the best players on the field will be UNC’s Anthony Ratliff-Williams, although he’d been held in check on kick-off returns and with all their quarterback problems, he’s caught only 16 balls. Our special teams and defensive line could be key in keeping the ball out of his hands. He’s a game-breaker.
Matt asked about our won wide receivers: will anyone emerge as the star pass catcher we’ve had the last two years? DB: “Anytime we’ve had a guy who could ‘show off’, we got the ball to him. Spreading it around does make it harder for the defense to prepare for us. But there’s plenty of season left if anybody wants to ‘show off’” He said that Ravian Pierce will be back. “Ravian can block- it’s the #1 job of a tight end. But he can catch and move better than people realize. His best match-up is in the red zone.”
Liam from Pompey called to say that the Coach had had a “nice bye week” and he hoped we could get back on the winning track. He wondered how we were going to stop the running game. Dino: “We need to tackle. We made tackles for three quarters. Was it fatigue? We haven’t gotten people down or gotten off the field when we needed to. We need to get them down or grab cloth and hold on until the cavalry comes. We’re doing that in the first three quarters. We also need to extend drives and wear the other team down.”
John, who said he was a stage 4 cancer patient, looks forward to each game every week and will be doing so for the SU basketball season as well. He said he was glad Coach Babers decided to come here and was glad he’s still here. The coach was touched, saying he felt very humbled. “I’m excited that you find enjoyment in our games and we will do everything we can to provide you with an enjoyable Saturday.”
Matt asked the difference between a coach’s job from Monday through Friday and on Saturday. Babers: “You are like a fireman, going around putting out fires, putting emphasis on the correct places in each practice. If a player is down, you increase the reps for other players. You have to balance the scales. Game day is about being clear with your mind so you can make the right decisions. . But you have to be emotional, too. You have to get players amped up or amped down. You have to know each one of your sons.”
The special guest was defensive tackle coach Vinson Reynolds. Dino introduced him: “got after us when I was Bowling Green, (2014: Western Michigan beat them 26-14). The next year we got after him, (a 41-27 BG win), and he’s been humble ever since. He was one of the first guys I hired at Syracuse.”
Reynolds praised his star pupil, Chris Slayton: “He’s unbelievably selfless and humble, very soft-spoken. He’s a leader who shows the young guys the way. He has just 10 tackles but he takes up double-teams. He just wants to win. We just want him to get off the ball and be disruptive. If he takes on two guys someone will be free. Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman both have 6 sacks. “
“We haven’t done a great job the last two weeks of creating third and long. North Carolina doesn’t have a lot of veterans on their offensive line but they’ve had the most continuity there of any unit on their team, (a reference to the suspensions and injuries). They’ve got a lot of big, physical guys. Their backs do a great job of hitting the hole, making people miss and running downhill. Michael Carter is 5-9 195, elusive with speed and he can run you over. Javonte Williams came from Ohio State and can run over you but has deceptive speed.”
On going up against a left-handed quarterback: “We need to sack and strip right-handed.”
On recruiting during the bye: “They (the recruits) are crazy excited with our style of play on both offense and defense and with our success this season. It’s made recruiting easy.”
