Coach Babers’s first show this year show will be Wednesday night at 7PM because the first game is Friday, (the show will normally be two days before the next game). The show will originate from PressRoom Pub, located at 220 Herald Place in Syracuse's historic Herald Square, each week this season.

You can (or could last year, anyway), listen to a podcast of the show, probably the next day, at: Search results for babers | Free Internet Radio | TuneIn
I’ve been asked to continue doing the summaries, even by people who listen to the podcasts. I may focus on the major points, rather than trying to record everything.
My Question(s) or Comments
First a comment:
“Coach, we are riding pretty high right now. We’ve beaten two schools that were 10-1 against us all-time, (Florida State and North Carolina State), and are ranked for the first time in 17 years. We are in La la land. But if we lose to Wake Forest, we’re going to feel like the producers of ‘La La Land’ when they found out ‘Moonlight’ actually won. So let’s follow up one big win with another.”
“Coach, for the last three seasons I’ve noticed that the vast majority of our passes, short and long, go to the sidelines, which I assume is a harder throw than over the middle. Since Tommy DeVito came in late in the North Carolina game, we seem to be passing over the middle much more with great success. Is it all about what the defense gives you or can we impose our will on the opponent with the passing game the way you want to do with the running game and make them cover the whole field?”
The Show
(I sometimes re-arrange the comments so that statements made on the same subject are reported together, even if they came at different points of the show.)
Dino said that the players had done a great job. He liked the fact that they had the same smile on Monday that they had had on Saturday, which meant they didn’t get into trouble celebrating after the game. “I appreciate the moderation.” Matt: “is this when it slips?” Dino: Yes, when their names in the papers and professors mention them. We have to put on our guard….we need to do the right things. We aren’t invincible but we’re really, really good.” Matt said it was SU’s biggest Saturday night win since Auburn in 2001.
Dino said he was happiest about turning the senior class into winners, (even though we could still finish 6-7). He said that “it’s absurd” that all their hard work hasn’t been rewarded with a bowl game until now. Matt said that the freshmen “have their chests pumped out. Andre Cisco said he expects to go to a bowl every year”. DB: “It’s not their fault. I just hope they are ready to do the work necessary to make that dream come true….We’ve bene very tough on them in spring and fall camp. We want them to play old-school football. It isn’t easy for millennials to play old schools. It’s tougher and more physical. Because we are hard on them early, we don’t have to beat them up so much this time of year. They are like a pencil that’s bene sharpened to a fine point.”
I called in my question – and my comment. Coach laughed and said that we won no games while I was on my cruise. He asked me not to go on another. I told him I’d hold off at least until the off-season. he said they throw up the sideline because there were fewer defenders there and bad things are less likely to happen. But the other teams got tired of trying to cover the middle so we’ve started throwing over the middle the last two games. (I would argue that the defender covering the sideline has quite an ally- the sideline. Also, since it’s a more difficult throw, it’s harder to make good things happen. Last year we were -12 in turnover margin with the big problem being interceptions on sideline passes. Now we are +9 and are throwing over the middle more.) Coach did say that he’d like to make the other team cover the whole field.
Matt noted that we were throwing deep more than ever in the last two games. Coach said that what the defense had been giving us. The question of whether we can impose our will on the opposition with the passing game the way he wants to do with the running game, (“We want to run the ball when we want to do it, not just when they are letting us do it.”) Coach also credited the blockers who let our quarterbacks throw those balls unimpeded. He said that “We’ve got guys who can run. Sometimes we wish they were a little faster.”
A twitter question was about the other team’s deep balls which “are killing us”. DB: “To stop the run we have to put people in the box. That puts our defensive backs on an island, in a man for man or a zone. That’s why they get those scholarships and all the food we feed them. Occasionally we’re going to give up a play like that. Hopefully it won’t be too often.”
Matt asked about the health of the players. I didn’t hear anything specific but Dino said that in November, “The bumps and bruises are more than owies: starting units are changing all over”.
They talked about Chris Dortch, “the most explosive player who didn’t play in last year’s game”, (when they scored 64 points on us without him). He’s returned two punts for scores and lines up outside, in the slot or in the backfield.
This week’s trivia question was: Who is SU’s only three time bowl MVP? My own clue: Bud Poliquin once said this of the battle for the starting positon his freshman year: “There’s Gladys Knight then there’s the Pips. He’s Gladys Knight and the rest of them are the Pips.”
John in Baltimore said that the coach had asked for “Faith without evidence” when he came here and it’s paid off. (I like having the evidence.) John said we were two fourth downs away from being in the playoff discussion. He had two questions: How much will a bowl appearance, combined with the problems at Rutgers and Maryland, help our recruiting. Also: Does coach want a d-back whose been beaten to intentionally commit pass interference to avoid giving up a score? As he often does, Dino answered the second question first. “Yes. Any coach college or pro would want a penalty instead of giving up a score. (NC State did that several times.) The problem is sometimes you get beat so badly you aren’t close enough even to commit interference.”
As to the first question, he thinks the bowl will help us some in the 2019 class but much more with the 2020 class. Most of the 2019 players have already committed. It will help us athletically and academically.” He didn’t specifically comment on the Rutgers or Maryland situations.
Todd in Sackett’s Harbor asked if Dino had followed the SYU program at all before he came here. DB: “My dad always made it clear to me that the greatest running back of all time was Jim Brown. I had a chance to meet him when I became coach here and I was so intimidated it was like I had a speech impediment. I said Ahh…Ah…Ah. That’s my previous connection to the Syracuse program.”
Liam in Pompey called in to congratulate the coach on “a good win. The Dome was rocking. We’re bowl eligible. We have four games left. The team is very motivated. Good night.” Matt thanked him for the “good summary”.
Someone in the Pressroom Pub asked if Andre Szmyt had a scholarship. He does. He got one after the Pitt game. Coach said “I’ve never seen a freshman do what he’s done in 35 years.” Matt said he’s on pace to set a national record for field goals. (That’s 31 by Billy Bennett of Georgia in 2003 in 38 attempts: Andre has 21 of 23 – so does Cole Tracy of LSU. Bowl records count so there are five games left, although Tracy could have the SEC title game and the national championship playoff, too). Coach said that he watched Andre practice and asked what percentage of field goals he had made in practice. It was 90%. They tried to throw him off by having the team yell at him, throwing water at him and it made no difference. They have a camera behind the goal posts in practice to judge such things and he hit the camera over and over, no matter what angle he was kicking from. Coach thought he was trying to destroy the camera. He’s now hitting 91% in games. (I hope he doesn’t set the record because I hope we score touchdowns on those drives.)
Against Wake Forest “Possessions will decide the outcome. We need to get stops and not turn the ball over.” We are +9 in turnovers. Wake is -2.
Nick Monroe is the coach of the safeties and nickel backs. Matt said he “had plenty of swag” when he entered the room. He called him a “Swag Daddy”. He said they are “focusing on stopping the run- proper positioning and where your eyes go”. They are having to “mix and match” in the backfield due to the injuries. Trill Williams can play the corner or the nickel. Andre Cisco is “not like a true freshman, physically or mentally. He’s got a high football IQ.” Evan Foster has become quite a run-stopper. “He’s starting to run through people. If he hits you, you drop.” He said the team had a 90% tackle percentage in the last game, which is very good. (They scored 41 points because of the other 10%.)
Program note: Next week’s show will be on Wednesday due to the Friday game. There will be no show the following week and the Thanksgiving week will be on Tuesday. I was hoping Matt would tell us when the first Boeheim show would be. I hope they do another combined show as they have done the last two years.
