I’ve been asked to continue doing the summaries, even by people who listen to the podcasts. I may focus on the major points, rather than trying to record everything.
My Question(s)
“Coach, both teams are hoping their quarterback can get through this game in one piece, considering the strength of both defensive lines. Tell us about the offensive lines who will face them. Who has the advantage there?”
The Show
(I sometimes re-arrange the comments so that statements made on the same subject are reported together, even if they came at different points of the show.)
Dino Babers: “Our young men have been playing extremely hard and really focused on Saturday. (but) There’s a reason it’s called ‘Death Valley’.”
Ron in Rochester said he’d predicted 8-4 and feels Coach Babers has done a good job. HCDB: “I’m glad I’ve done a good job.” Ron hopes Syracuse can meet Buffalo in the Pinstripe Bowl because it would be great for New York State. Coach told him that he’d really, really like to see his team get a 13th game. But the Pinstripe Bowl is set for an ACC-Big Ten match-up. Buffalo beat Rutgers but they didn’t get their spot in the Big 10.
I called in my question. First I told them that I wouldn’t be calling in the next two weeks two weeks because I’m going on a cruise and will be away. Fortunately, there’s a bye week after Pittsburgh so I’ll only miss one show and I can E-mail a question for that one ahead of time.
On the subject of the offensive line, Coach thinks both teams have lines that “belong in the top 3-4 in the conference”. Clemson has “2 or three offensive linemen of NFL quality and ours is good as well. They also have the top defensive line in the conference and we are very good. Since those groups match-up well, I think you have to look elsewhere for the deciding factor, such as the fact that we have Eric Dungey and they have a freshman quarterback, or the running backs.”
On Clemson’s defensive line: “Three guys will go in the first round and the fourth will go in the top three rounds. I stood next to Dexter Lawrence and he was like a redwood tree. It’s the best line I’ve seen in college ball.” Matt noted that the opposition has attempted 66 passes and been sacked 16 times, which means they have been sacked 19.5% of the time. We have 13 sacks and the opposition has thrown 135 passes, so our rate is 8.8%. Dino plans to alternate his offensive linemen to keep them fresh so they can “make sure they don’t get in, (to the backfield).” Matt said that we are 31 in the country in field position and we lead the conference in plays of 10 yards or more.
Joe, at the restaurant, asked about the 4 games rule and its impact on the Kelly Bryant situation. DBV: “Their team is different now. A young man who’s won 16 games and lost 2 as his team’s quarterback. He’s taken his team to the Final Four. All that knowledge and you put it on the pine! That shows how good the young man behind him has to be. He’s one of the most talented quarterback to come along in a long time. I imagine he’s mature beyond his years. He’s 6-6 and weighs 215….He’s not a normal freshman. He was the #1 pro style prospect in the country. He could be the next Payton Manning or Aaron Rodgers. We’re lucky we get him as a freshman. He’s a mature 18 year old. You go from elementary school to junior high to high school to college. College is the biggest leap in athletics. Males grow late.”
Matt said that the only true freshmen to start at quarterback for Clemson in 20 years have been DeShaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. Matt also noted that Swinney wanted Bryant to stay as he intended to use both quarterbacks. DB: Now that they are down to Lawrence, “All it takes is one hit and you are in a different situation.”
Another fan at the restaurant referred to Dino’s post game comment after the Florida State game about the 966 Mustang: has he ever driven a 1966 Mustang? Coach that he had not but “I have sat in the backseat when I was just a tad. It was fun when the wind blows through your hair.”
Liam in Pompey asked if the Clemson quarterback situation would be to our advantage. Also: “How do we stop their defense?” I think he meant “How do we prevent their defense from stopping us?” DB: “Against a good defense you are going to have good and bad plays but you have to stay upbeat and optimistic and continue to be aggressive to score.
Another questioner asked if coach ever paid attention to the point spread. DB: “I used to work for UNLV. You couldn’t gamble but all you heard about was point spreads. I’m a math guy and I figured out how often a 7 point underdog won, how often a 17 or 21 point underdog won. That sort of thing. It’s the only thing I got out of it. The kids never get into it. All they know is that they’ll be in a fight after school.”
Dino doesn’t see a revenge motive as being a big thing in this game. Dabo said it’s just another conference game. “There’s a lot of truth in that.” He thinks this is about “who is the next up-and-comer” among Syracuse, North Carolina State, (also undefeated) and Boston College. “It’s a two game swing.” He recalled his first game as a head coach at Eastern Illinois. “We were predicted to finish last and were playing the defending champions. We beat them and their coach said “At least that team won’t be winning the conference.” Then they won the conference.
They talked about the Bills upset of the Vikings. “One guy gets hurt or gets the flu , it can throw everything off.”
John in Baltimore wanted coach to rank our running backs in terms of speed. . He said he hadn’t timed the freshmen but that Moe Neal was faster than Dontae Strickland. But he loves Strickland’s toughness and grit. He wants to running backs to “take a load off of the quarterback by running the football.”
Steve in Oneida tried to ask a question but his phone broke up. Dino said he just wants to “give the fans something to be proud of and keep them watching.”
One fan wanted to know what Coach Babers thought of injuries that come when we are playing “in tempo”. Dino said that for player safety you have to assume they are legitimate but he wonders sometimes. There was one play where we’d gained about 40 yards and a defensive player came into the game. He kept looking to the sidelines and there was some kind of signal and he fell down. The referee saw it and shook his head “no”. He was going to let the play go on with the defender on the ground but the training staff ran out on to the field. They could have gotten involved with the play and someone could have gotten hurt.” Matt said “They’ve got knives and needles and stuff”. He’d like a rule that a player who leaves a game for an injury can’t come back until the next possession.” DB: “That would be awesome.” Except it could mean players with injuries will try to play with them rather than come out more than they do now.
They introduced Coach Steve Stanard, our defensive ends coach, who played at Nebraska and coached at Wyoming and has their “style and brand…His position is off to a hot start.”
Coach Stanard said his players are “great guys with great personalities”. Alton Robinson “had a lot of earlier opportunities. He was getting plenty of his but no sacks. He got his timing right and had three of them against Connecticut”. Kendall Coleman is “really twitchy and can bend.” Guys like Slayton, Williams and Black are “pushing the pocket from the inside, allowing the ends to turn the corner.”
