Coach Babers’s Show will be at the new Marriott Syracuse, (the former Hotel Syracuse). The first show will be Wednesday night at 7PM because the game is Friday, (the show will normally be two days before the next game). They will be in Shaughnessy’s Irish Pub, which can be accessed from the street.

This article contains the schedule:

You can also listen to the show live each week on the Syracuse IMG Sports Network and Cuse.com. Wednesday's show will be on 99.1 FM and 97.7 FM, as well. The show will regularly air on 99.5FM (Syracuse) 99.1 FM (Utica) and 1200 AM.”
You can also get it on: Listen to The Alan Nathan Show on WGVA on TuneIn

There hasn’t been any change in the phone numbers, which last year were 315-424-8599 (local) or 1-888-746-2873. You can call to ask questions or submit them via Twitter at: #AskDino hashtag on Twitter
Or through Cuse.com, (the SU Athletic website):
Syracuse University Athletics

You can (or could last year, anyway), listen to a podcast of the show, probably the next day, at: Search results for babers | Free Internet Radio | TuneIn

I’ve been asked to continue doing the summaries, even by people who listen to the podcasts. I may focus on the major points, rather than trying to record everything.

My Question(s)

“Coach, people are saying half-jokingly that we should start games as if we were down by three touchdowns, and come out firing as we seem to be at our best facing big deficits. They suggest that our conventional running game has produced little and we might as well abandon it. Do we need to establish the run to set up the pass or can we use the passing game as our fastball and the running game just as a change-up? “

The Show
(I sometimes re-arrange the comments so that statements made on the same subject are reported together, even if they came at different points of the show.)

NC State is about to play Louisville and Coach Babers said he would favor NC State, despite Lamar Jackson. He didn’t go into details.

I called in and they didn’t even wait for the first break to put me on. I asked my question and Coach said “It doesn’t matter if we run 1st or throw second or throw first and run second. What we want is to have achieved balance by the end of the game so we can attack a defense in all ways. We want to be even handed, not right handed or left handed.” Matt pointed out that our first pass in each of the last two games has been intercepted.

The did an injury report: Kendall Coleman and Josh Black are doubtful, Zaire Franklin and Jamal Custis probable and Sean Avant, Antwan Cordy and Jake Pickard are out.

They talked about Pitt’s defense with giving up 32 points per game. Coach thinks their numbers are “screwed” (I assume he meant skewed), by their schedule: they’ve played Oklahoma State, Penn State, Georgia tech and Youngstown State, (who played for the FCS title last year). “I expect a lot more normal on both sides of the ball.” (Meaning that the stats in this game won’t be skewed.)

The coaches put in a lot of work on Sunday. “Film study puts a light on things. Lots of young guys make mistakes. We need them to grow up to help the seniors get what they deserve.” (A bowl game in their senior year after three straight losing seasons).

Someone sent in a question about checking spots from the press box. Do we have a coach assigned to do that? HCDB: “You can always challenge spots but the replay official should always be checking the spot.” They discussed one particular spot when, on fourth down, the play was set up to go outside but Dungey saw an opening and cut back inside and appeared he might have made it but got a lousy spot and was shot. Finley had 3-4 runs for first downs that barely made it each time.

They discussed the history of the Pitt and Syracuse series and what kind of players both teams have, often recruited form the same places. “Tough Guys, It’s what they are all about and what we are all about.” Dino has seen the rivalry from both sides: he was Pitt’s running backs coach in 2003. We lost to them at Pitt that year, 14-34, (no, he had never coached a game in the Carrier Dome before he became our coach).

Liam in Pompey wondered what Coach was doing to “get the players to grow up a little faster” and to prepare for Pitt “who had an upset win over Rice”. (I don’t think any win over Rice is an upset.) Dino: Playing LSU and NC State the way we did gets us ready for Rice…errr, Pitt.” He said he’d changed the way the team is practicing to help them get off to better starts and “play defense the way we did in the second half….We need to get one of these games on the docket!”. (The docket?)

Steve in Syracuse , (not me) asked why we don’t use Cool Mist Fans to prevent our players from getting over-heated and cramping up. Babers said that he didn’t see the need as it’s been the other team that’s been cramping up. “Our guys are in really good condition.”

There’s been a story going around initiated by a former colleague at Pitt, their current defensive line coach, Charlie Partridge, that he used to drive Babers to work and he would show up with what appeared to be a white beard. Charley asked him what it was and Babers told him it was Nair, a hair removal cream. Coach set the record straight: it was “Magic Shave” , which treats the skin of curly haired people to avoid ingrown hairs. “Charley has got some suburb in him and didn’t understand so I told him it was Nair.”

His big memory of being on the Pitt staff was that the primary rule was to throw the ball to Larry Fitzgerald. “if he was doubled covered, then throw the ball to Larry Fitzgerald. If he was triple covered, look elsewhere, but take a long peak at Larry Fitzgerald.” The Pitt Panthers and the Pittsburgh Steelers share facilities. There’s a wall between their offices but the players interact, which can give the Pitt players an advantage, although one Pitt coach, (they didn’t say who) objected to the interactions.

Matt noted that Pitt lost a lot of players from last year and are starting only two seniors. Babers: “They are trying to find playing time for their young players and so are we.”

Vince Reynolds, who coaches the defensive tackles, was the special guest. Chris Slayton is his #1 guy. “He loves the game, does the extra and brings others along with him. He’s very confident. If you’re going to be in a fight, you want Chris Slayton with you.” Kayton Samuels is 320 pounds and can do back flips. “He had become a more consistent player and a leader. It’s a race to maturity.” Matt suggested that “#95 and #52 are there when you really need one”, (a big play). Reynolds corrected him: #52 comes out on third down. “it’s not his specialty.” He described a lineman from Florida who was “backing up Chris” and who has built himself up to 280 pounds. I assume that was Kenneth Ruff, (our new kickoff returner). “He doesn’t eat a ton of food. We told him to let it happen naturally”.

Reynolds’s tackles are “looking for redemption on defense” from last year’s game. Pitt ran for 393 yards, which allowed them to gain 251 yards and 4TDs on only 9 completions. “That team had four guys who are now playing on Sundays, including James Connor….Our #1 goal is to stop the run. We need to get off our blocks, read our keys and swarm to the ball.”

Thank you so much for doing this. Good questions and answers...I didn't realize Z was dinged up to the point he might not play.

I have to admit it is a little confusing to me not using Elmore at DT.

Ref "spots" are always a guess and that is why I've been a big advocate for years in putting something magnetic or the like on the ball so a laser can read it so they can accurately mark the ball. These random spots are little too Vegas for me.

I think its pretty clear the replay judges dont watch every spot nor care too.. That would slow the the game down even more.. Still when spots are off by 1-2 yds at key points in the game the teams need to be paying attention to make sure it happens. Those 2 missed spots late in the NC state game meant we didnt get the ball back.

That's why I want the laser or the like there...it would be immediate.

When I see a ref running up the sideline, then onto the field on a curve and then just eyeballs where he thinks the ball is. I gotta believe there's a better way to spot the ball.

"Charley has got some suburb in him" :rolling:

I've always wondered how they decide where a punt went out of bounds when it was still airborn when it crossed the line. Maybe technology could help there.

punts are funny. they just line up where it was kicked and where it lands and draw a line.. ignores how a ball is actually punted and curving though

I love when you see them grab the ball from the pile and take two steps before placing it. Seemed like in the LSU game it was two steps back for Syracuse, two steps forward for LSU. How does that work? Was that part of the reparations agreement or something?
