- We won by 20 but at no time did we look like a team that’s about to go on a memorable late season run. BC was once 6-3 but they are now 9-16 and 4-11 in the conference. They stink. In both of our games against them, we didn’t seem to be playing very well but they never really threatened. That tells us nothing about what will happen against better opponents, as we found out at Virginia Tech.
- We’re playing better defense but it’s the offensive lapses that are concerning. We don’t have a lock-down defense that can get us though them unscathed. We build up a 21 point lead at 36-15 with 3:03 left in the first half with a chance to make it a complete blow out by halftime. We didn’t score again until 1:23 into the second half, during which the Eagles had laboriously scraped together 9 points in a row to make it 36-24. Then we went on a 12-2 run to make it 48-26 with 15:28 to go. The Eagles then flapped their wings to 10 points in a row over the next 4:12 to get within 48-36. We pushed the lead back out to 64-43 with 4:59 left. BC went on a 3-10 run to make it 67-53 over the next 2:48. Boeheim was already substituting. Fortunately the deep bench guys played well enough to push it back out to the final margin. Imagine doing this against Notre Dame, Duke, UNC or Miami? It might be a problem even against Georgia Tech. Matt Park asked Jimmy Satalin the reason for this roller-coaster trend. He suggested that the SU team was” bored”. 13-12 and you’re bored?
- Frank Anselem came up craps with a 19 minute 3 point, 3 rebound, 3 foul performance. He got in foul trouble early and played tentatively when he played at all. It can happen in any game.
- Buddy taken away but Buddy giveth, too. He had 5 steals but 4 turnovers, including one with 4 seconds left in the half that gave BC the last shot instead of us.
- Joe Girard’s assist-to-turnover ratio: 1 to 3. Not what you’re looking for. On the season he’s 111-76. Sy Torrance is 67-21.
