- Thought after the first period that was watching a replay of the 2016 Pittsburgh game, where neither team could or even bothered to stop the other and we lost 61-76. Instead it was a replay of the 2017 Wake Forest game, which was 38-24 in the first half but 5-40 in the second half, condensed into one half.. This one was 17-10 in the first period and 3-34 in the second.
- BC’s first ten plays of the second quarter, (from the play-by-play on Cuse.com):
1st and 10 at BC36 Grosel,D deep pass complete to White,K for 64 yards to the SU0, 1ST DOWN BC, TOUCHDOWN, clock 14:51.
1st and 10 at BC25 Dillon,A rush up middle for 5 yards to the BC30 (Melifonwu, I.).
2nd and 5 at BC30 Dillon,A rush right for 9 yards to the BC39, 1ST DOWN BC.
1st and 10 at BC39 Dillon,A rush up middle for 4 yards to the BC43 (Fredrick, C.;Foster, E.).
2nd and 6 at BC43 Levy,T rush right for 2 yards to the BC45 (Williams, L.).
3rd and 4 at BC45 Bailey,D rush up middle for 5 yards to the 50 yardline, 1ST DOWN BC (Foster, E.).
1st and 10 at BC50 Grosel,D deep pass complete to Flowers,Z for 50 yards to the SU0, 1ST DOWN BC, TOUCHDOWN, clock 07:27.
1st and 10 at BC49 Dillon,A rush up middle for no gain to the BC49 (Jones, M.;Coley, E.).
2nd and 10 at BC49 Dillon,A rush left for 51 yards to the SU0, 1ST DOWN BC, TOUCHDOWN, clock 05:31.
1st and 10 at BC26 Bailey,D rush left for 74 yards to the SU0, 1ST DOWN BC, TOUCHDOWN, clock 03:47.
After that the rest of the game was just watching the clock, hoping it would go faster.
- It was a triumph for meathead football: force the defense to focus entirely on tackling 240 pound backs, then use play-action and misdirection to set up the big plays, take a big lead and then just pound away the rest of the demoralizing way. We had no answer for it. Too many players who are veteran players by now were sucked in too easily.
- Dennis Grosel is a former 6th string walk on who came into this game completing 35% of his passes and averaging 95 yards passing a game. In this game we was 8 for 10 for 195 yards, 3 scores and no picks. We turned him into Tom Brady.
- Two weeks ago, AJ Dillon and David Bailey totaled 404 yards rushing on 50 carries and 5TDs. I thought to myself: “Boy, I’m glad that didn’t happen to us!”. Today they totaled 429 yards on 51 carries and 5TDs. BC rushed for 511 yards, by 54 yards the most ever rushed for against SU, (West Virginia got 457 in a 0-43 win in the Dome in 1993).
- BC gained a total of 691 yards, the fourth highest total SU has ever given up. In fact, seven of the eight highest totals ever given up by Syracuse defenses have happened in the Dino Babers era:
845 vs. Louisville 9/9/16
734 vs. Wake Forest 11/11/17
727 vs. Louisville 11/18/17
691 vs. Boston College 11/2/17
654 vs. West Virginia 10/30/93
654 vs. Notre Dame 10/1/16
654 vs. Florida State 11/19/16
644 vs. Pittsburgh 11/26/16
- Our offense was not really the problem but three consecutive three and outs while BC was making the big plays above were not what we needed at that point. Our play-called seemed uninspired at this point with a lot of dink and dunk. We did better trying to burn one of the worst pass defenses in the country long.
- DeVito had a good day but he broke off running too early at times and is more accurate throwing downfield than to the sideline, which we do too much of.
- We just lack the muscle we need up front. Not only could we not stop their running game but we couldn’t punch it in to complete drives. Dino has to totally beef up both lines. We can rush the passer but what good does that do against this team?
- Another perfectly good college football weekend ruined by having to watch a Syracuse game. Next week is looking pretty good. Then we’ve got to do this three more times before it finally ends. This is not what we spent the winter, spring and summer looking forward to.
