- During the football season you heard the term “moral victory” a couple of times. It’s an oxymoron. Games and morality have nothing to do with each other. (Are there immoral victories, amoral defeats?) What those who use this term are vainly attempting to describe is that fans want two things from every contest. They want to win, which is what will go in the record books and be the only thing remembered. They want to emerge from the game feeling optimistic, not uncertain or pessimistic about future victories. That actually does more to determine their immediate mood than whether the game itself was won or lost. What we’ve been waiting for in this basketball season is a game that made us feel that this is likely to be a successful team, one that can meet the challenges of a more difficult than normal non-conference schedule and then the ACC gauntlet and then put on a strong post season run. We hadn’t had one yet and this looked like the game we were looking for. But after building up a 25 point first half lead, (and then allowing a couple of free throws to end the half), we come out for the second half just going through the motions, missing easy shots on one end and giving them up on the other. We give up another ten unanswered point before putting the breaks on and building the lead back up to 24 points at 76-52. Then we fall asleep again and a 3-18 run brings it to 79-70 with 1:09 left. Surely they can’t catch up from 9 points down in only 69 seconds? We shouldn’t had to even contemplate such a disaster. It didn’t happen but we’re still searching for a game that tells us this team is going to be something special. - DaJuan Coleman had his best game this season with 2 points on 1 for 5 shooting and had 7 rebounds. Joseph Uchebo, the Pitt transfer who is about the same size, (6-10 261 vs. 6-9 268) had 16 points and 12 rebounds on 5 for 10 shooting. Maybe someday, DaJuan can do THAT. - Kaleb Joseph again didn’t get into the act, going scoreless in 17 minutes on 0 for 6 from the field, including 0 for 4 from arc. I’d like to see less of him and more of Franklin Howard. - Tyler Roberson had 11 rebounds but followed up his 20 point game against Elon, (who beat Charlotte), with a 6 points, 3 for 10 game vs. the 49ers. - Yes, you aren’t going to lose many games when you hit 14 three pointers but how often are we going to do that? It’s one short of the school record. And those threes were wide open. I’d like to attribute it to our great ball movement but Charlotte wasn’t much of a defensive team. - We have yet to play a game that would defeat our next likely opponent. And it’s one we sure don’t want to lose to.
