- I know we never expected to win there and that Clemson had a great defense but it’s still frustrating to be so completely punchless and let one opportunity after another go by while the game slipped away. By opportunity, I don’t necessarily mean golden scoring opportunity: I mean getting stops on Clemson and being in a positon where a scoring drive could give us control of the game or get back into it. We just had nothing, and it wasn’t a mighty cool hand. - I guess the AL Long for Heisman campaign will have to wait a couple of years. He was 12 for 27 for 82 yards and two interceptions. Including sacks, he ‘carried” 10 times for -14 yards, giving him a total offense of 68 yards to go with his 55.14 passer rating. Actually I give the kid a pass. He was a true freshman starting only for the second time against one of the best defenses in the country and surrounded by a team that was hardly very dynamic to begin with. He’s a guy who should probably be redshirting but we need him now so he’s out there. His previous performances were competent at best which was impressive for a true freshman, (and an upgrade over what Hunt was giving us). We wasn’t really dazzling and I don’t know that he’s really “the guy”. Let’s save the judgment for 2015 or maybe 2016. - He wasn’t getting much help from Tim Lester. The offensive concept was understandably conservative with an inexperienced quarterback against a such a strong defense but we kept running the ball up the middle on second and third and long, which did us no good. I’m not down on Lester at this point but the jury is very much out on him as it must be on Long. - It all added up to a 3 for 16 performance on third down and a second half performance, if that’s the word, of 53 yards and 3 first downs. While Clemson possessed the ball for 21 minutes and 16 seconds, including the last 8:17. - Field positon was not our friend in this one. On our first seven possessions we had between 75 and 92 yards to go to score the first seven times and had an average of 84 yards. For the game we averaged 73 yards to go. Clemson averaged 67, which doesn’t sound like a big difference except it meant that they didn’t have to create 82 yards of offense to score that we did. Sicne they were ahead 375-170 in total offense, it still mattered. We ahd three drives of more than five plays. - What happened to our new ace receiver, Steve Ismael? He never caught a pass. Meanwhile Ashton Broyld continued to drop them. He did catch 4 of them but more than halfway through his junior year, he’s still r scored a single touchdown for Syracuse. It was against Stoney brook, two years ago. - If a guy was down it was likely a Syracuse guy, as it has bene all year. I don’t believe we were faking to slow them down, although some of those guys came back into the game. Brisley Estime got hurt again. Does it ever end? - Cole Murphy has done a good job, (11 of 13 FG this year including a 50 yarder today). But that missed 42 yarder basically eliminated any chance to win this one. - The concept of a moral victory is a ridiculous one. What they are really talking about is that each game has two results: the score and the expectations created for future games. You can come close to beating or at least compete well against a superior team and create hopes that future victories will come from such performances against lesser teams. As with the Florida State game, we competed much better against this team than last year but with the offense being so pathetically bad, I’m not sure that much confidence about future games was manufactured tonight.
