- Early on, our offense struggled a bit. Punting for the only time on the first possession. Garret Shrader had to run the ball a couple of times. His blocking didn’t break down. He had time to throw but couldn’t find anyone open. But he and Carlos Del Rio Wilson certainly found open receivers as the game progressed, (suggesting that this staff can make in-game adjustments), and we wound up with 7 TD passes. - LeQuint Allen is a really good back. But he had a 90 yard run vs. Wagner last year where he got caught from behind. In this game he had a play where he burst through the line and had nothing but grass ahead of him. I thought he was gone but two guys, coming from each direction, caught him. They may have had good angles but guys with big-time speed run past the angles. I hate to say it but Sean Tucker would have scored on those plays. You can still be a very good college running back without having what they call ‘climax’ speed. James Mungro and David Walker come to mind. But that deficit may make it hard for LeQuint to make it on the next level. - We had 3 turnovers in the game, one a terrible interception thrown by Shrader in the end zone late in the first half, (a probable miscommunication between him and Donovan Brown). The other two were cases where our guy was probably down but it was 65-0 in the fourth quarter and the refs decided not to delay the end of the game with a review. Greg Delaine’s pick in the third quarter with SU up 51-0 was rather dubious, too but they decided to let it stand. - Penalties! We had 7 for 60 yards, which isn’t exactly record setting, (Colgate had 6 for 40). But the sequence where we had a player line up wrong on 4th and 9, then do it again at 4th and 4 was awful. Dino said that it caused him to “pop peas”. (?!?) He also said at halftime, (according to the ribbon board), that we have to ‘toot’ better in the second half. - We had some special teams blow-ups that would have made a difference against an opponent who could compete with us. Justin Barron bobbled a snap on an extra point, rolled out and threw the sort of pass you’d expect from a defensive player. DeMarcus Adams did well returning punts but on the second half kickoff return that was going out of bounds at the 8, he grabbed the ball and went out of bounds with it. Dino was pissed off. “It’s either coach corrected or it’s player corrected.” He told Matt Park in the post-game interview that “in some cases, the coaches didn’t help the player enough. In other cases it was the player. They’d better not make that mistake again or they may not play again.” - In Dino’s first game here, seven years ago we held Colgate to 45 yards rushing, 98 passing 11 first downs and 7 points. Then Lamar Jackson came to town. This year we held them to 54 yards rushing, 52 passing 7 first downs and 0 points. We won’t be playing a Lamar Jackson this year but what we did to Colgate might be just as irrelevant when we play someone good.
