- We are a veteran team yet we weren’t ready to play this game. In our first eight possessions we had 4 turnovers and 3 missed shots and were down 2-11. After that, we pressed while Duke relaxed and that made all the difference. There was a good discussion on the radio about who were the team’s leaders: do we have anybody who can take over and get everybody going when things are going poorly? I’d have to say: “No”.
- We are a team of shooters but not of scorers. Joe and Cole have trouble getting by aggressive defenders. The Boeheims do better but have trouble with taller defenders, which suggests that they would have trouble making it at the next level. And when you are having trouble getting open shots, especially if your team is falling farther and farther behind, you are going to have trouble making the open shots, too. Jimmy and Cole got some points in garbage time but those four guys still wound up 13 for 49 (26.5%) and they took all 29 three pointers, making 5, (17.2%). Obviously we can’t win or even compete with those numbers. Against Clemson they were 23/46 (50.0%) and 9/21 (42.9%), and we won by 13.
- Our starting forwards had three rebounds each and we finally lost the battle of the boards in an ACC game, 35-45.
- It’s just too easy for the other team to get the ball inside and then pass it back out. They didn’t beat us by much in inside scoring, (30-32), but they did have 25 assists to our 13 and most of those came from center of the defense to the outside. It does really seem as if our whole team collapses into the paint when the ball goes inside. We actually tried to do that, too, more than in other games and it got us some open shots but we missed them.
- The gem of Coach K’s recruiting class is Paolo Banchero, who played 33 minutes and scored 15 points with 13 rebounds and 4 assists, (he had 24 ‘net points’). The gem of Coach B’s is Benny Williams, who played 7 minutes, missed two shots, got 2 rebounds and committed a foul for -1np. That’s where the two programs are right now.
