- “Another valiant effort”. You don’t go to bowl games because of valiant efforts. You need wins. We’ve long sense proven we can compete with these teams. FSU was having a lousy season and was no great shakes today. We needed to win. We didn’t. We are in NFL mode right now. There are just W’s and L’s. This was an L.
- We ran 95 plays to 56, outgained them 463-343, out first downed them 21-13. With those numbers, you are supposed to win. And win easily.
- Since we got rid of the ‘directional’ teams, we have scored 26-25-27-27-19-24 points. It’s not enough. Scott Shafer’s last team averaged 27 points a game. Dino Baber’s first team averaged 26. This team is averaging 29. It’s not enough.
- We don’t score enough because we are a dink and dunk team with no conventional running game. FSU won this game on a 51 yard pass, a 63 yard run and a 54 yard run. We will have a good offensive team when we can do that.
- Our running game seemed to be making progress but Neal and Strickland gained only 40 yards on 16 carries.
- The Nole’s defensive line dominated our offensive line, stuffing the run and keeping Dungey on the run most of the time.
- Ismael and Phillips had 24 of our 31 catches. We had started to use other people to keep the defense honest, but other than the TD to Custis but that was his only catch. Butler and Pierce had one each. Strickland caught the other 4.
- The defense again kept us in the game but in each game there’s 2-3 plays where the gate opens wide and the other time gets big play. And that gate is often opened by the safeties.
- Juwan Dowell intercepted a pass with 13:35 to go in the fourth quarter at LSU. Our defense, as well as it has played, hasn’t forced a turnover since then. That’s 5 games in a row without a defensive turnover. We’ve been paddling upstream in every game.
- We did get a turnover on special teams- a golden opportunity that we squandered. You can debate kicking for the three points or going for it. I didn’t like the two runs to open the series or the rather aimless scramble on 4th down. Overall the play-calling was pretty weak. The coaches have got to give the players a better chance than that.
- I wanted to see the onside kick but never again. We have no idea how to execute the play. Pooch it or kick away.
