- Basketball is like life, but with one improvement. A sad ending is inevitable, except one team gets to live forever. It’s not us.
- Our offense just never functioned in this game. Early on we couldn’t get shots. Later we got some but couldn’t make them. Most of that was Houston, who covered our shooters well and cut off our drives to the basket. Some of it was tentative and confused play by SU but some of that was also due to Houston’s defense. Nobody played up to their capabilities for SU.
- Buddy Boeheim got plenty of attention and he was facing Dejon Jarreau, a player the same size as he was and who was the defensive player of the year in his conference. He only got a2-3 clean looks and they weren’t close. In the first half they kept came up short. Jimmy Satalin said he didn’t seem to “have his legs”. I don’t know why that would be. He’s had a week off. He wound up 1 for 9 from three.
- Marek Dolezaj was constantly frustrated – and constantly frustrating. He’s perfectly capable of making a medium range jumper but he won’t attempt them. He would drive to the basket and look to pass it back out rather than get the ball up towards the basket. He was 1 for 6 and had 2 points and assists. It’s sad that distinguished career ended with a game like this.
- Alan “I got nothin” Griffin was the invisible man for the fourth straight game. I kept rooting for him to have a big game and JB was too, leaving him in there as long as he did. His response was to go 0 for 3 with 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals and 0 blocks.
- Quincy Guerrier struggled the whole game, going 3 for 9 and falling down at the front of a late fast break, losing the ball, leading to a three point play at the other end that got the Fat lady warming up.
- Robert Braswell was 0 for 3. Satalin said “those are the kind of shots that go in when we’re going good”. Maybe Bras is the type of player who plays well when everybody else is.
- Even Kadari Richmond seemed kind of overwhelmed with 3 uncharacteristic turnovers. He’s great at getting to the basket but couldn’t do it against this team.
- It’s hard to maintain momentum from one week to another in this tournament. It helps if you have more than just momentum. Houston was a top ten team all year and looked it. We were an unranked team that was playing it’s best ball of the year and just didn’t do it tonight.
