- We almost scored on the first play. 6-6 Damien Alford was breaking free, just like he did on that 73 yarder vs. Albany but Schrader over-threw him. Would Tommy DeVito have completed that pass? We’ll never know. One thing I do know is that we aren’t going to win too many games with 77 yards passing. Defenses will realize that with Schrader out there, they can pack ‘the box’ to stop Tucker. Schraeder seemed to realize it in the post-game interviews. He bemoaned his own performance and the inability to balance out the offense. Either he has to dramatically improve or this quarterback controversy isn’t over.
- One virtue of starting the 6-4 Schraeder is that he could catch Airon Servias' high snaps. He also got a low one. But the timing of a bunch of plays was thrown off and who knows what we might have accomplished. Fortunately, that was mostly cleaned up in the second half and hopefully we've seen the last of it.
- Why does every play have to be run from the shotgun? We had multiple short yardage pays where the ball had to go back 5 yards to the quarterback who would then hand it to the running back who now has to negotiate that five yards before he can gain anything, which he won’t do if there’s any penetration. I remember when we used to convert every 3rd or 4th and 1 with a quarterback sneak. Schraeder would be great at that.
- He’s not their starter or even their back-up running back but I’m glad to see the last of Shedro Louis, who last year ran for 170 yards on 10 carries and scored twice from 75 and 57 yards out. In this game he had 59 yards on 9 carries, (giving him 229 yards on 19 carries over two years, a 12.5 average), and caught a 7 yard TD pass.
- It turns out Duce Chestnut is a freshman after all. After a few down-and-outs he bit on a down and up and gave up the tying score in the third. Then he missed a tackle on that last drive that produced a 35 yard gain. He’s the happiest guy in town over that goal line stand.
- On Liberty’s second score a 23 yarder from Willis to CJ Daniels, the same guy who had roasted Chestnut, Garrett Williams was beat but pinned Daniels along the sideline, where, per Matt Park, he stepped out of bounds on the 7, the 5 and the 3 before coming back in to catch the ball in the end zone. The refs reviewed it and just said that “the play stands” without explanation. A receiver can’t go out of bounds, then come back in to catch the ball – unless he’s pushed out of bounds. As Park said, whatever contact there was minimal. The refs also missed a targeting call that tore off Schrader’s helmet in the first period and a couple of interference calls.
- Malik Willis is good. I wish we had him. But a Heisman candidate? A #1 draft choice? “The Lamar Jackson of Liberty”? I don’t think so.
