- So it’s 68-62 with 6:16 left. We’re actually goona do it- we’re going to win this thing without Elijah Hughes! It’s going to put us clearly ahead of NC State in the standings. Virginia was losing so we were going to have the inside track on that #4 spot in the conference that would give us a good shot to get into the NCAAs. Our remaining possessions: After Buddy Boeheim stole the ball, Joe Girard turns it over… Marek Dolezaj commits an offensive foul… Joe Girard misses two three pointers in the same possession… Markell Johnson picks Buddy’s pocket…Girard makes a short jumper to end an 0-9 run…Girard has a jumper blocked, then misses a three pointer…Dolezaj makes two free thows….Dolezaj misses a jumper…Girard makes two free throws…Johnson picks Buddy’s pocket again….Dolezaj backs into Funderburk, thinking he’ll get a foul call. Funderburk just backs away and Marek falls down, getting called for a travel. Giraud misses a jumper….still down only 5 with 16 seconds left, Girard misses a trey and Edwards a putback….NC State runs out the clock, game over. They are tied with us in the standings but really ahead because they beat us, as is Virginia who comes back to win. And how was your evening. - They were gloomy on the radio about the prospects of Hughes being back for the big game this Saturday at Florida State. - Joe Girard saved our bacon with his 40 point game. Unfortunately he was 1 for 10 from the arc and missed a foul shot so it was a 30 point game and we lost. - Buddy Boeheim, double teamed because of the absence of Hughes, missed 11 of 15 shots and 6 of 8 three pointers and was held to 10 points, 7 below his average in a 5 point loss. - We are now 43 for 163 from the arc in our last 7 games. That’s 26%. It’s supposed to be a major weapon for us. Instead, NC State burned us for 11 treys in 25 attempts, 44%, making it a major weapon for them. - Marek kept making the moves that worked when Hughes was in the game and wound up feeding the ball to the Wolfpack shot blockers, who swatted away 6 ball, most of them Marek’s. - We ran out of gas but it wasn’t due to Marek and Buddy playing 40 minutes or Joe 38. They’ve done that before. We ran out of gas because Quincy Guerrier, our main source of energy in the game, who averages 18.6 minutes, played 37 minute and was excellent for 30 of them. Bourama Sidibie and Jesse Edwards also got more minutes than usual. More than that, everyone was on overdrive with Hughes on the bench. The whole game was like a desperate comeback, even when we were ahead, and desperate teams run out of gas. - JB tried Brycen Goodine at the point for 4 minutes and it didn’t work. He’s not Girard’s back-up. He’s Boeheim’s back up. - It was a valiant effort. When they do those “blind resumes” on the TV shows a month from now, “valiant efforts” will not be part of the resume.
