- Yes the calls were one-sided in the first half. We got called for 14 fouls to their 6. We went to the line 5 times to their 21. We attempted 17 two point field goals to their 12. Fouls are normally on two point field goals and, while it’s not an official field goal attempt there should be a relationship between how many times you at are attempting two point shots and how many times you get fouls. Not in this game.
- But it wasn’t just the number of fouls called, (which wound up 26-18) and free throw attempts, (23 vs. 37). We made 13 of our 23 attempts, 56.5%. They made 34 of their 37 free throws, 91.9%. If we’d made their percentage, we’d had made 21 and the game would have gone to overtime. If they’d made our percentage, they would have made 21 and we’d have won by 5.
- Poor Oshae Brissett, who shot 78.7% from the line last year, was 0 for 5 and looked bad on each one. He’s just totally psyched himself out at the line and is now shooting 64.6% and falling. And I think it’s impacted the rest of his game Mr. Double-double had 10 points and 3 rebounds tonight.
- If you get tired complaining about the refs and our foul shooting, you might note that we had 25 rebounds to their 46. And they aren’t the big, powerful team up front that they normally are. May (12 rebounds) is 6-8 and Johnson (7) 6-9 but Williams (6) is 6-4 and Little (6) is 6-6. Our leading rebounder was Tyus Battle with 5.
- Elijah Hughes had a great first half with 15 points. That’s what he wound up with. Yeah, they adjusted their defense but that shouldn’t mean you stop scoring all together. Tyus Battle gets the full attention of the defense all the time. he scored 29 points tonight.
- We’ve just slugged it out with the #3 and #5 teams in the country, per the current rankings. We came up short both times. What will that mean to the committee? Just two losses, no different from the Old Dominion and Georgia Tech games. Yes, it helps strength of schedule but will we get any credit for playing competitively? Probably not.
