- Pitt was 1 for 14 from three at the half and we were only ahead by 4 points. They aren’t a great shooting team but you knew they would do better than that and they did, going 6 for 12. - Meanwhile we missed our first 11 threes of the second half, finally making on the only shot Joe Girard made, then missed a couple more to go 1 for 14 ourselves for the second half. - We made only 9 of 16 free throws while the Panthers made 17 for 20. We’ve got three excellent free throw shooters. The problem is, it always seems to be the other two guys, Jimmy Boeheim and Jesse Edwards on the line. They are shooting 56% and 59%, respectively. Jim Boeheim has decided not to try to rebound our misses, preferring to set up his defense at the other end. Jimmy Satalin suggested it might be time to rethink that strategy. - The big question is: which player was most disappointing? Cole Swider had many open shots and made 3 of 14. At least he grabbed 8 rebounds. - Joe Girard was scoreless until he hit that three with 37 seconds left. He wound up 1 for 9 with 6 turnovers. He did have 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Satalin made the point that this was a game when he would have been replaced by Symir Torrence early. But he wasn’t available. Instead we went with an extra forward and Buddy did most of the ball handling. This illustrates the folly of going with three guards. The previous two years, JB used all of his 13 scholarships “to protect the program”, he said. This year he went with 11 guys and just the three guards, presumably because of the mass exodus of the back-ups last two seasons. He needs to over-recruit and if guys leave, they leave. - Jimmy was 3 for 10 from the field and had 3 turnovers. He managed 8 points and 7 rebounds but it wasn’t enough to take the pressure off Buddy. - Jesse Edwards wound up with decent numbers: 8 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. Remember all the times in recent years we were hoping to get that from two guys? But he got muscled out of the way or had the ball ripped out of his hands too many times. John Hughley and Mouhamadou Gueye, the Pant hers’ two big men had 30 points and 28 rebounds between them. - Our bench: three guys played 19 minutes and had a rebound, a steal and three fouls. They didn’t score because they never attempted a shot. And who are we trying to develop into a star: John Bol Ajak or Benny Williams? - Matt Park thought it was ironic that our record was 9-11, because this has become an emergency. To guarantee a winning record you have to have a 17-14 regular season, (which would put you in two single elimination post season tournaments). We’d have to go 8-3 the rest of the way to accomplish that. We look more like a 3-8 team now. - Rooting for SU is supposed to be fun. Right now it’s just about loyalty.
