- A fifth year senior took a sack on third down with no time outs left and then spiked the ball on 4th down. There’s no spinning that, although Dino’s right, plays at the end of the game get all the attention but other plays during the game mattered, too. (A lot of them were made by Rex.) Matt Park and Adam Terry agreed during that last drive that the amount of time taken was a sign of a lack of confidence. I think that was the real problem. Rex just doesn’t have confidence in himself on the football field and his teammates don’t have confidence in him. When that’s the case, players make mistakes you don’t expect them to make. - All season long, with everything going badly we had this to brag about: Our cornerbacks, Garrett Williams and Iffy Melifonwu, had not given up a touchdown pass all season. They both lost end zone battles for the ball in this game - and we lost by a single touchdown. - The one thing we did pretty well against Louisville was run the football. Sean Tucker rushed for 93 yards on 16 carries, a 5.8 average. NC State decided to take him away and put 8 in the box. Tucker, who represents our entire rushing attack, had 16 more carries – for 18 yards. His longest run was 6 yards. It was a victory for Sean to get back to the line of scrimmage. - Why can’t we run a sweep? It seems like a simple play and other teams run it against us with success. I recall that we tried one wide run on a pitch-out, (I think it was to Johnson) and there was no blocking at all. The quarterback made no attempt to set up the play with a fake hand-off or looking like he was going to pass it. He just took the snap, turned and shoveled it to Johnson, who had 2-3 defenders on him immediately. Nobody pulled out to block for Johnson. - The refereeing was as strange as the game but the most frustrating thing was that the Wolfpack receivers seemed several times to push the defenders off to make the catch without a response from the officials, including the all-important end zone plays. - It was still another game where we entered the fourth quarter with a chance to win, (in fact the lead), but could not make the plays to do so. It was also another game where we were capable of playing with a superior team for part of the game but not for 60 minutes. We won the first half 22-14 and were feeling much like Bryant was against Jim Boeheim’s basketball team at halftime the night before. The second half of this game was SU 7 NC State 22. - We are a game at undefeated Notre Dame from finishing 1-10, our worst record since G-Rob’s first season. This was our last real chance to get a second win. To beat Georgia Tech and NC State, two schools we were historically 2-14 against. But we couldn’t pull it off and, in fact, if tech hadn’t committed 15 penalties in that game, we might be 0-11.
