- It was supposed to be a battle of the best man to man defense in the country and the best zone. Both teams had faced MTM and Zones before but “nothing like what they are about to see”. Both teams shredded the other team’s defense. It actually made it better game. Why is this on the “downside“? Because we are still playing and the sight of a team shredding our zone is more of a problem for us than it is for Wisconsin whose next game will be in November. - Taylor’s shots were well guarded, (he was 6 for 15 from the floor even if it doesn’t seem like it), but those other treys were wide open. They used good passing and screens to set them up but I had hopes we would guard the perimeter so tightly they wouldn’t be able to get any good shots off. They had no potential - zero- to hurt us inside. And yet, when they got the ball inside, we collapsed on the shooter- who wasn’t a shooter at all- just a guy who wanted to pass it back out for the trey. We finally figured that out down the stretch and made the defensive plays we needed to win the game. - Rakeem Christmas and Baye Moussa Keita committed 8 fouls between them guarding air. Here comes Jared Sullinger. They say he won’t be a good NBA player. How does that help us? We are likely to see Fair or Southerland or Joseph on Sullinger by the end of this game. He’s likely to get 30/20 on us. - In the pantheon of Bad Scoop What turnovers, the one at the end of the first half has got to rank very high. We had a 10 point lead, (I didn’t think we’d see a 10 point lead disappear in this game), then Christmas gave Gasser the present of a foul on a three pointer, (why is he that far from the basket?) He made two shots. We are playing for the last shot but with 11 seconds left Scoop fumbles the dribble and then tries to pass over an on-rushing defender- right into the hands of his pal Jordan Taylor, who drove to the basket and put in a lay-up to make it a 6 point game at the half. Wisconsin scored the first five points of the second half, (even though we started with the ball), and it was a one point game, which is what it wound up. - Rakeem Christmas played like a freshman- a high school freshman. He went for e very fake and committed 3 fouls in 11 minutes. His only positive stat was a single rebound. We are 36 games into the season and should be able to expect better at this point. What will Sullinger do to this kid? Or maybe he’ll surprise us. - I thought we would out-rebound this team, which is more concerned with stopping the fast break than hitting the boards. We did get 26 rebs to 25, (per SU athletics, 23-23 per ESPN). We rebounded 29% of our misses. They rebounded 30% of theirs. It wasn’t critical but I expected better. We got 6 rebounds from our centers, (Rak had 1 in 11 minutes), 10 from the forwards, (KJ had 2 in 39 minutes), and 7 from the guards, two of whom are 6-4 and over 200 pounds. There weren’t a lot of misses to rebound but it was still disappointing. - After the game the CBS talking heads were discussing the final possession. It was all about why didn’t Bo Ryan have a plan? What was he thinking? There was no discussion of SU’s defense in that possession, which the best I’ve ever seen in such a situation.
