SWC ... you have a brilliant observation of the obvious! And this is not a backhanded compliment because it's amazing how many people in this world don't see this obvious at all. Even when you put the truth in front of their faces. My biggest fear is that Marrone is too set in his ways and bullheaded to see the obvious some times. There are plenty of good coaches that coach the same way. But I think the great coaches are the ones that learn to adapt and learn to do it quickly, before the opportunity passes. We all praised Marrone for playing to our strength by going no huddle, it showed he can adapt and apply what has worked. But then we get disappointed when we see him go back to the same conservative decisions that failed him in the past. There were 2 4th down plays which most of us believe he should have went for it but chose to punt. We wouldn't be so critical if we hadn't see him do this before. He always punts in that situation and I don't ever remember him having success doing it. It's always a shank or a kick in the end zone which nets 20 yards at best. Since Rob Long has graduated, our punt team is the biggest weakness of the entire team, why would you look for reasons to put your worst unit on the field? You should be finding ways and making decisions to keep them off the field. I would be curious to know what our net yards/outcome has been like when we punted near midfield. How often have we pinned them and caused a 3 and out or won the field position game? How often have they made up the yards from our punt a couple plays after? Anyways, thanks for the write up SWC ... I agree with everything posted here and always enjoy reading your insight. I wish the staff would hire you as a statistical consultant.
