- We did all the things we did to lose the other games in this game. We just won because we facing an offensively one-dimensional FCS team. Actually, this game seems like a loss most the way, even after we took the lead. Rene’s catching a kick-off while straddling the out of bounds line, (who said he couldn’t’ lose yardage as a kick-off guy?). Two missed field goals. A missed block on the Gulley fumble when Jarrod West whiffed and the guy stuck his helmet where the ball was. A missed tackle on the Maysonet run where Jeremy Wilkes didn’t wrap up and just wound up giving Miguel a shove. A dumb personal foul on a kick off. A guy lines up offside one what became a sack, (which he didn’t get). Then there was the two goal line stands, which brought back memories of the Iowa debacle of 2006. Do those things again against any of our remaining opponents and you are inviting them to beat us.
- Marrone’s decisions about taking risks don’t make any sense to me. I actually wasn’t angry about punting to USC down 12 with 13 minutes left but the same coach tries for two twice and tries two onsides kicks. Here he goes for it from the 2 yard line and the one inch line when two field goals could have salted the game away. Instead it’s 21-17 and we are a missed tackle away from losing this game. If you don’t want to take the game away from the kids, get us some points in those situations.
- The game plan for this game didn’t make any sense. Stony Brook is a running team. We are a passing team. They came out and did what they did best, (the one big pass play was set up by the run). We came out doing something we don‘t do best. What kind of an opening play is sending Nassib on a run up the middle? He broke one on that later but it’s badly designed play that puts him in harm’s way. We got some decent runs but we couldn’t do it consistently, We’d have an 8 yard run, a 6 yard run, a 2 yard run a 3 yards run, an incomplete pass and a punt. Hey! We ran for 19 yards! But we really didn’t go anywhere. Nassib, as we’ve said often, is a rhythm passer who is not as affective when we are trying to “establish the run” and use that to set up the pass. We actually run better when we pass more. Why did we run the ball 45 times and only pass the ball 35 times?
- We’ve been outscored 30-52 in the first half this season and have out-scored the opposition 68-49 in the second half. See above. We start out doing what we are not best at and then, when we fall behind we start doing what we are best at. Why not come out firing from the beginning of the game? Why wait?
- Marcus Sales looked like he could beat his man on every play. We only got the ball to him 5 times. It should have been 15.
- Alec Lemon had 2 catches for 30 yards. But where is the Alec Lemon we saw last year? What a pair he and Sales should make. They need more than 7 catches.
- Our tight ends are pretty good, I hear. They had 3 catches for 16 yards.
- Special teams are a problem. Is there an echo in here? Two missed field goals. What the heck happened to Ross Krautman, (who was 18 for 19 two years ago and 15 for 19 last year)? The longest punt went into the end zone. I hate to say it but I thought Rene getting hurt was a break for us, (I hope nothing is broken for Steve). Ritchy Desir is better. And I wonder if we have somebody even better than Ritchy.
