- James Southerland is 12 for 15 from the arc in this tournament. It’s not going to last.
- We didn’t score a 2 point field goal until 7:08 was left in the second half. We wound up the half 2 for 11, ((.182) within the arc for the half.
- We got off 30 shots in the first half, 17 in the second.
- It was predictable that Pittsburgh would try to take Southerland out of the game in the second half after he went 5 for 5 from the arc in the first half. The rest of his teammates have to make them play for that. They really didn’t. I don’t have the shooting break down for all players in the second half but CJ Fair, Brandon Triche and Michael Carter-Williams were a combined 12 for 31 from the field. That’s not good enough.
- We could have had a bigger halftime lead. We never went to the foul line once while the Panthers attempted 10 free throws and made 7 of them. Even at the end of the game, Pitt had 9 more attempts, despite intentional fouling at the end and got 5 more made free throws than we had. The game was at least equally rough at both ends and the no-call when James Southerland did a classic job of drawing the charge midway through the second half, (I don’t have the time since no call was made), was a travesty. We should not have had to sweat it out at the end.
- Still, there’s no excuse for Brandon Triche’s two missed free throws with 6:22 left. He’s a 76% guy and the first one was off the back rim and the second off the front rim. We could have used those two points in the final minute.
- The centers: 41 minutes played. 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks and 9 fouls. Rakeem Christmas has to learn that if you are taller than the guy you are playing, you don’t have to jump to defend him, at least not 2 feet off the ground.
