- Here are the highlights of today’s victory over Wagner:
- Wagner was a minnow in the college football world. Dominique Williams is probably a good player. But the Seahawks had no air game. Their receivers played like they were wearing boxing gloves. Their line was overpowered and their quarterback had a couple of nanoseconds to throw. They completed 6 passes for 34 yards. We had 37 points before they had a first down.
- Wagner offered some early resistance to the running game but couldn’t cover our receivers and the game was like a passing drill. We completed 80% of our passes for 359 yards. That opened things up to allow us to run for 236 yards at 5 yards a carry.
- The point is the opposition was so weak we can’t tell how much this team as really improved and have no clue as to how they might perform against Tulane, much less Clemson. Terrell Hunt may have looked like Johnny Manziel, (a little) again this team- or the Northwestern scrubs- but that doesn’t mean he can get anything going against the really good teams. As they said in the post-game presser, this was a "but..." game.
- Drew Allen looked just as dysfunctional as he did in the first two games, despite the late touchdown- and for the same reasons . Matt Park and Chris Gedney were trying to spin it in the radio booth, saying that Allen had to face a “fired-up Wagner defense” to start the game and that Hunt was performing against a “tired” defense. Right…Allen softened them up for Hunt. You have to wonder why the coaches ever thought he was the better guy to begin with.
- Ryan Norton converted 6 extra points and kicked two field goals. But he also missed a conversion and sent a wounded duck to about the 10 yard line on a field goal attempt. He’s a work in progress.
- The one thing you don’t want in a game like this is an injury to key player. Jerome Smith went down after a play but I saw he was on his feet and interviewed after the game and he seemed none the worse for wear. I hope so.
- I'd hoped to see more of Funderburke. Did he even get in the game?
- Do they have to play the music at half time so loud that you can’t have a conversation with the guy next to you?
- I missed a chance to watch one of the greatest college football games ever to see this one. But I felt the team needed some moral support and that I needed to be there, so I’m not really sorry.
