- I was glad this one wasn’t on NFL Red Zone. You wouldn’t have seen much of it. I was thinking at halftime that if this one goes to overtime and the ball is placed on the 25 yard line, it will be the deepest penetration for either team.

- That first half was a battle between a shell-shocked team, (Syracuse) and a deflated team, (Wake Forest), both caused by the results of their previous games.

- Yes we are 4-4 but the wins are over Wagner, Tulane, NC State and Wake Forest. Not exactly a murder’s row. It’s possible that all of our last four opponents are better than any of those teams.

- It benefited us greatly but I have to put it on the Downside that Wake’s best player, Michael Campanero, had his game, season and college career ended early in the game when he was leveled by SU’s Ritchie Desir after calling for a fair catch on a punt. Desir, who is our punt returner, should know better. Chris Gedney suggested that the fair catch signal was a little early and Desir might have been screened off by his blocker and didn’t see it. That sounds plausible. We seem to have a tradition of ending the season for key Wake Forest players. You just hate to see any player get a serious injury like that, (in this case a broken collar bone). This guy had been on a roll and no doubt was looking to get on the NFL’s radar. Hopefully, he still is.

- When we were trying to get something going in the first half, Riley Dixon faced what amounted to a one-man rush as he made that little sideways move to punt the ball. If he’d thought of it, he could have walked for the first down. Running, he would have had 20-30 yards. Of course, we are down to the nub in kickers but he could have just gotten the first down and headed for the sideline to avoid contact.

- We lost our regular placekicker, Ross Krautman, to injury. We lost his replacement, our kick-off guy Ryan Norton, to a drinking spree. That left us with Jonathan Fisher, who proved that not only can’t he punt, but he can’t placekick either. We eventually went to Dixon lining up for a field goal and then faking it. I don’t know if Norton will be back or when but until then, maybe going for it and going for 2 will be the best option.

- Third and 5 from our own 15. We send Jarrod West, our slowest wide receiver down the sideline, covered by their best corner. The pass, 30+ yards downfield is incomplete. Really?

- The normally reliable Ritchie Desir made some rare plays. He muffed one punt, which fortunately rolled out of bounds. He turned around to catch a ball that went beyond the 10 yard line, which is normally no man’s land for a punt returner. Fortunately he was able to turn back upfield and get a few yards before being hit. He also made a fair catch with nobody within 10 yards of him and then tried to convince the ref that he’d caught it a couple yards beyond where he actually did to get back at least a couple of the yards he’d voluntarily surrendered. Then there was the hit on Campanero. Don’t get me wrong: I love Ritchie. But this was far from his best game.

- Macky MacPherson, after nearly four quarters of a steel cage match with Nikita Whitlock, went out favoring a shoulder and never came back in the game. I hope he’s OK. He’s a good one and one of our leaders.

Campanero's injury came on the hit from Darius Kelly on the first series. You could see it on the replays, and him on the sideline. He tried to keep playing, but it wasn't going to work. Desir's illegal hit just knocked him backwards. He was right back up, letting Desir know how much he appreciated it.

But that's when he went out. Maybe he cracked the bone on the first hit and cracked it open on the second.

NC State, Wake, and Tulane might not be world beaters - but we'd have killed someone for any of those wins not too long ago.

That's less on Desir and more on the Wake staff.

it was a win against a team that gave miami a run - d played lights out after doing nothing 2 of the past 3 games

only down side could be injuries-

Didn't even compare to the illegal hit Dorian Graham leveled him with.

Desir didn't knock Campanero out of the game but isn't this the 2nd straight game with an interference call on a punt? Sheesh.

And I echo the comment on Desir's reliability, I have confidence in his hands, but that moment after the fair catch where he stuck the ball ahead a couple yards was weird. When is that a thing?

And speaking of weird, West catches a long pass and urges the offense to line up and run a play - presumably to avoid a review of the catch. Why? I couldn't grasp why he was spinning out of control on that.

Last game was a garbage penalty. This week's was definitely on us. From the replay I don't know how Desir didn't see him wave the arm. As for Desir's punt returns, he already has Estime breathing down his neck, wonder if that's impacting him. Someone on the staff needs to remind him that the reason he still returns punts is that he's the safe option. If he's no longer going to be the safe option, then they're not going to wait too long to go with the guy who might return one for 6.

On the West catch, before I even saw the replay I thought for sure it was going to be reversed. Figured West did not think he caught it, even though it seemed pretty clear on the replay. He wasn't telling the offense to hurry up for tempo, he didn't even want to know the playcall. He just wanted that ball hiked immediately.

It always helps to calm down but I don't want Desir to just think of himself as "the fair catch guy". We've been through a decade of fair catch guys and Ritchie was a nice change from that when he got the job.

Being safe doesn't mean fair catch guy. Being safe means you don't pick up a ball that's bouncing on the ground. Being safe means you plant your feet on the 10 yard line and don't catch the ball if it's over your head. Being safe means you don't drop the ball because you're already looking downfield when the ball is landing (I don't think that has happened yet, but it's probably next on the list for a guy who thinks he might lose his job).

I would remove the word "safe?", which is about caution and replace it with the word "smart", which allows for opportunism and aggression.
