- I was glad this one wasn’t on NFL Red Zone. You wouldn’t have seen much of it. I was thinking at halftime that if this one goes to overtime and the ball is placed on the 25 yard line, it will be the deepest penetration for either team. - That first half was a battle between a shell-shocked team, (Syracuse) and a deflated team, (Wake Forest), both caused by the results of their previous games. - Yes we are 4-4 but the wins are over Wagner, Tulane, NC State and Wake Forest. Not exactly a murder’s row. It’s possible that all of our last four opponents are better than any of those teams. - It benefited us greatly but I have to put it on the Downside that Wake’s best player, Michael Campanero, had his game, season and college career ended early in the game when he was leveled by SU’s Ritchie Desir after calling for a fair catch on a punt. Desir, who is our punt returner, should know better. Chris Gedney suggested that the fair catch signal was a little early and Desir might have been screened off by his blocker and didn’t see it. That sounds plausible. We seem to have a tradition of ending the season for key Wake Forest players. You just hate to see any player get a serious injury like that, (in this case a broken collar bone). This guy had been on a roll and no doubt was looking to get on the NFL’s radar. Hopefully, he still is. - When we were trying to get something going in the first half, Riley Dixon faced what amounted to a one-man rush as he made that little sideways move to punt the ball. If he’d thought of it, he could have walked for the first down. Running, he would have had 20-30 yards. Of course, we are down to the nub in kickers but he could have just gotten the first down and headed for the sideline to avoid contact. - We lost our regular placekicker, Ross Krautman, to injury. We lost his replacement, our kick-off guy Ryan Norton, to a drinking spree. That left us with Jonathan Fisher, who proved that not only can’t he punt, but he can’t placekick either. We eventually went to Dixon lining up for a field goal and then faking it. I don’t know if Norton will be back or when but until then, maybe going for it and going for 2 will be the best option. - Third and 5 from our own 15. We send Jarrod West, our slowest wide receiver down the sideline, covered by their best corner. The pass, 30+ yards downfield is incomplete. Really? - The normally reliable Ritchie Desir made some rare plays. He muffed one punt, which fortunately rolled out of bounds. He turned around to catch a ball that went beyond the 10 yard line, which is normally no man’s land for a punt returner. Fortunately he was able to turn back upfield and get a few yards before being hit. He also made a fair catch with nobody within 10 yards of him and then tried to convince the ref that he’d caught it a couple yards beyond where he actually did to get back at least a couple of the yards he’d voluntarily surrendered. Then there was the hit on Campanero. Don’t get me wrong: I love Ritchie. But this was far from his best game. - Macky MacPherson, after nearly four quarters of a steel cage match with Nikita Whitlock, went out favoring a shoulder and never came back in the game. I hope he’s OK. He’s a good one and one of our leaders.
