My Question(s) or Comments (or theories)
Coach, some fans suggested we played a 3 man front against BC’s running game was due to the injuries we’ve had. To what extent have injuries limited your options on defense?
For the twitch segment:
Coach, We are averaging 18.7 yards a kickoff return. We’ve had nine occasions then we tried to run it out and not gotten to the 25 six times. The farthest we’ve gotten is the 28. It’s boring but would it be better to just to make a fair catch and accept the ball at the 25 yard line?
The Show
(Since both the show and the Twitch segment were available the same evening the first time out this year, as long as that’s the case, I’m going to just focus on the highlights, including the answers to my questions. I sometimes re-arrange the comments so that statements made on the same subject are reported together, even if they came at different points of the show.)
First the answers to my questions:
Q1- “Somewhat. (Injuries) have always done that. We lost Tank, Jobity and Marcellus Barnes. Now Bellamy is out this week. One of our better receivers had to deal with family problems that came back up. We continue to try to fix our running defense.” Matt, as usual, followed up: “Is it about physical execution or scheme?” FB: Some of it is just who you are. ‘I’m not going to let you beat me.’ We are getting stronger, but you still need the mindset. You can be a big punk. You have to do it over and over (in practice). What does that name on the back of your jersey mean to you. It’s your neighborhood. I represent Camden, New Jersey. I could walk around with a half-step and be weak. If it’s you vs. Me, you’ve got to die. If everyone had the same mentality as LeQuint Allen, Fadil Diggs and Alijah Clark, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. Some dudes think it’s all right to fail. I can tell if a recruit is soft. We’ll need to toughen them up. But they need to have the physical skills. It takes some time to get DART. I tell recruits: ’Come play for me and I’ll get it out for you.’ Parents say ‘OK Fran, you’ve got him.’” MP: “Is there a fear (such that) they have to find out it’s OK to hurt?” FB: “It hurts if you put enough into it. Losing hurts. I want winners around me. Average people wind up below average.”
Q2 – “I thought about that, (fair catching all the kicks that don’t make it to the end zone), but what if we hit one? It only takes one. We don’t’ want to be soft. Just get to the 26.”
Matt opened the interview by telling the coach “You smell wonderful”. Fran said “I never said I was a dirty guy. I brush my teeth. Once your breath goes, you’re done.” He’s heard that T-shirts are coming out saying “Soap is for Winners” but Coach had nothing to do with it. “You’d have to have been in the trenches” to understand what he meant.
He said the team has been practicing well and a 50 degree California temperature “is still better than here”. He didn’t mind the wind and cold at BC: “It was normal football….Guys are responding. I show them things I don’t like in practice. I want them to be more physical, maintain their blocks and lift more weight in the weight room. I told them we’ve got 17 more days in this (regular) season and 3 games to play. Time is the only thing that don’t wait…We did some stuff vs. slow starts in practice. If the offense goes up, can the defense choke them off? If the defense chokes them off, can the offense score?”
He discussed California’s team. Matt mentioned that they’ve lost several close games and just put up 46 points at Wake Forest. FB: “Two good football teams, really the same teams. Good athletes on both sides of the ball. It will come down to the fourth quarter. We will win or lose at the end. It’s exciting.” [We’ve had a lot of games like that.] Cal has “A quarterback with a quick trigger, two tight ends who can really play and 2 really good running backs. They’ll be looking to run the ball.” He started to, as he often does, rattle off numbers. He likes “8, 3, 13, 6, 11, the two cornerbacks, 5 and 3, the #20 safety, the linebackers 0 and 10 and $93 and 94 up front.” So you can follow:
https://calbears.com/sports/football/roster
How do they find a facility to practice in for away games? “We got there and figure it out. If we’re on a practice field, we’re home.”
“Cornerback Williams will go to the league. You can se the instincts. We have two freshmen cornerbacks that really have it. We’ve got two guys coming in, one really good one from Florida. We’ll be really good in the secondary for years. Marcellus Barnes would have been a freshman All-American.” Matt brought up DL Maraad Watson as a freshman who “had it in their eyes”. FB: They have to deal with all that comes with it. It’s a tribute to his coaches. A lot of guys were rated high and got NIL money and they aren’t playing.” [That must create an interesting situation.] “I want the first game next year to be their first time on the field so I like to get the good freshmen on the field.” Matt said “you don’t want guys out there for next year’s opener whose last game was in high school.” Yet Fran said that there will be guys we use in that game whose last game was in high school.
Coach said that, after looking at the rules and the film, he’d have to agree that the call that cancelled out our successful onsides kick was a good call. “They did a good job.”
Michael in Manlius called in, as he usually does, with a bit of philosophy: There’s character and there’s characters. And you have to be a character to have character.” Coach agreed and asked Michael if he was religious, as the coach is. “Yes sir. You represent Jesus.”
From the restaurant: What does he want for Christmas: “A meaningful bowl game.” He didn’t define ‘meaningful’. What non-starter has the most DART? “Barry Buxton. He may end up starting.” We rarely blitz. Coach: “A shot fired! Matt suggested the statement needed to have a ‘?’ after it. There was no further response.
They discussed James Volono, our special teams coach, who is the special guest tonight. FB: “He’s his own self, all the time. I like when guys don’t switch up and do other things. He’s had a lot of adversity and he wears it on his sleeves. He demands to get it fixed.” He had a player tell him that he plays defense. “Cool, we’ll take you off of defense and you can just do this.” When he sees smoke, he runs to the fire.”
Volono: “It’s not all rainbows and unicorns.” [Our kicking game sure hasn’t been this year.] “Special Teams improves as the year progresses. It’s best at the end of the season.” Matt asked him to break down the practice schedule. “We do kick-offs 3-4 minutes a day, 10 total reps. It takes time to learn the techniques. I’m excited that the things are developing.” They discussed “The Prez”, Jackson Reeves Kennedy, (Matt looked up his middle name – JV said it should have bene Franklin, although we haven’t had a president with that last name.) “He won the position in an open competition”. Jackson transferred from Cornell, where he got a degree in hotel management. Cornell does that?
What about punt protection? “(It’s improved) due to consistency of personnel. It’s a new technique to a lot of people. I’m not used to not having success at a high level.” Cuse.com: “Vollono most recently served as Troy's special teams analyst, but also has stops at Georgia, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Colorado, Navy, FIU, Towson and the CFL's Edmonton Elks.” JV: “I’m motivated (to be successful). My hair’s a little grayer.”
Gomez opened the Twitch segment, (below), by asking if a game MVP got the front seat in the flight home from road games. Coach said that was an idea but that LeQuint Allen always gets the front seat and get it alone, with no one next to him.
Gomez asked when Zeed Haynes might be able to play. FB: “Haynes is doing well in stuff he’s able to do, weight room wise.” That’s all he said.
Coach “enjoys being head of the entire organization rather than just a position coach.” He looks at the jumbotron at the game only when he wants to check out a call, not to admire a great play like Gadsden’s catch.
Coach doesn’t “beat himself up” after a game. “Facts are facts. I don’t like being around soft people. We’ve got to tackle and stop the run, start fast. How much did we lose by? 6? And we didn’t play a good football game at all. We’ve got to impose our will. This season is about 4th and 9 and 4th and 1. We missed an opportunity and they took it.”
What made him think he could turn SU around? “Because we’re tough and we are winners.”
His son won a Pop Warner championship by scoring 5TDs, including a Pick 6. [Sign him up!]. Coach sent Coach Pride, (Deion Sanders), a tape of it. Sanders sends Coach Brown’s son gifts and Fran calls him all the time. He also calls Kirby Smart and Bill Musgrave to “find out how to flip Syracuse fast”.
Will the ACC get more than one team in the playoff? Coach at first said that he’s more concerned with Syracuse’s ‘fate’. But he noted that “We are a more competitive conference than others. You don’t see the blow-outs you see in other conference games. We’ve got legit coaches. Anybody can beat anybody. Coaches create greatness.
I posted that I hope that Coach will return from the game nice and clean. “That’s the plan.”
