Just curious as to how the bar scene was on the Hill before the CCSU game? I make it to multiple Cuse hoops and football games a year and Chucks was always my go-to for pregame. Seeing as this was the first major sporting event with no more Chucks I'd imagine the other bars were over flowing? I'll be back at the Dome for the Pitt game Oct 7th with 3 first timers and am wondering what the course of action should be. Maybe Armory and take a bar shuttle up (depending on time, sure to be a nooner?) Or maybe tailgate, which I've done at about a billion Bills games but never for Cuse. I'm excited by the idea but I have no idea where the best spot for that would be. In All my years of going to Cuse games I've only noticed a few true tailgates. There seems to be an occasional set up behind Marshall Square Mall.

I always like to go Fagan's. Get there early for the back bar and if weather is nice hang outside within the chains. Like to watch people walk by...ok girls, while drinking down some Magic Hat #9's.

Love Faegans. Downed many a IPA behind those same Chains. Chucks was just home base.

If you haven't been to a Fine Lot tailgate with these knuckleheads, you need to. Great food, great people, and if they'll let me in, I guarantee they'll let your group in

That is going to be my next stop when I get up there for a game. I've never been but have always wanted to since I've been on this site. Still trying to work out my schedule to make the trip up.

Fine lot is legend on this board. Someday I hope to experience it but it's to my understanding they do all the cooking? We usually have our own grill, fryer and spread. Pretty hard core tailgaters in my group. But it might be the best way to go if I want these guys to have the Syracuse exeprience...

Jeezuz, pal! Look up the West parking lot for the BEST tailgate on the Hill! Just check out the Tailgate thread for particulars--best 10 bucks you'll ever spend.

Somebody help this poor guy!

Any current students post on this board? The bar scene (which wasn't much to begin with) really took a hit when Maggie's was shut down. Can't imagine what the Hill and Marshall Street is like now with Chuck's gone.

Won't get a true sense of the impact on the pre-game bar scene until a crappy weather football game or until basketball season. I don't go to the bars for football unless the weather is awful, otherwise I'm tailgating. Had a couple friends who went to DJ's and they said there were maybe two dozen people in there.

Don't forget the new block party in front of Shaughnessy's at the new Hotel Syracuse. I heard it was packed for game one. They close off the street in front. Any reports from anyone from game one?

I actually heard the opposite. Maybe the bar itself was packed, but the street looked pretty empty from a couple photos I received from a buddy who was there.

Correct. I meant the bar.

What bars are left on the Hill? Faegans?

I can't imagine what students do now to get into trouble.

The former Lucy's/O&O is now a sports bar. Harry's is still there. Sheraton bar is typically packed pre and post game. One of the radio stations does a tailgate in their parking lot.

I'll forever miss the original Maggie's, and even the 2nd one when it became clear that they were just opening their doors to all ages. You're 14? Come on in!

EDIT: Did that sports bar close too as part of the whole renovation?

Yeah, torn down with the Chuck's block. Supposed to reopen in the old Bruegger's storefront this fall.

Not a football answer, but - I was up for the GaTech hoops game in March.
After a HUGE win (which we *thought* might have locked up a NCAA bid), we went out to Faegans afterwards - it was maybe half full.
Decent crowd, but not the shoulder-to-shoulder, hard to move around sort they used to get in there, back in the day. Was quite surprised at that, and frankly not too disappointed, as it made it easier to get beers and actually hear conversations.

PS - Once Chucks moved out of the basement below Sutter's Mill, and upstairs - it wasn't really Chucks anymore anyway.
So, Chucks has been gone for me for a long, long time.

Do what we did way back in the old days...go to bars off campus.
