Conventional wisdom says you look for a hot team heading into the NCAA tournament to fill out your brackets and select your Final Four

well . . .

Wichita State was 7-6 in its last 13 games, Syracuse was 8-8 in its last 16, and Michigan was 6-6 in its last 12

Yup. It's nice being hot going in to the tourney, but it's better to be hot in the tourney.

all that stuff is so overrated. so is playing a tough non conference schedule to prepare you better for March. the tournament is all about matchups and getting hot in MARCH.

Well conventional is often stupid, kinda like "you need a strong running game".
The team that wins the tournament is always hot because it means they won 6 in a row. But yah, the games before the tournament don't mean much more than the ones in January. Even Uconn who is the go-to example for this theory got beat by Notre Dame at home in the last reg. season game, despite Hansborough fouling out with like 6 min's left.
