Memory is an interesting thing. My recollection of the 1978 Syracuse-Florida State game was that Bill Hurley, our QB, who at least SU fans considered a Heisman candidate, was"taken out" by three Seminole players, two of whom grabbed him and held him up and the third of which lowered his head and speared him in the ribs, two of which were broken, finishing his season on the opening drive. Per this You-Tube clip of the game, (at the 4:20 mark):

He wasn't held up by two players so the third guy could pear him. he was hit simultaneously by a player from behind his left shoulder and by Reggie Herring, an FSU linebacker with a reputations for "drag-offs" - hitting guys so hard they had to be dragged off the field. Herring did 'spear' him- I'm not sure when that became illegal but it wasn't called. However i no longer think that Bill's injury was a "take-out" ordered form the sideline, as I have believed all these years. .
