A team that has just been scored on actually has the option to receive a kick-off or to kick the ball off themselves and it was a common practice in those low-scoring days to kick off and then use your defense to force a punt or a turnover and get good field position. The Michigan coach, George Little, was a firm believer in this practice, taught to by his mentor, Fielding Yost, who had just retired and was watching the game from the stands.
