Jim Boeheim’s radio show is on Thursdays from 7-9PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show originates from Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse on Erie Boulevard in Syracuse. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. The second hour, which begins with the conference season, is hosted by Gomez, a local radio personality.

You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-424-8599. Or you can submit questions from this page:
http://cuse.com/sb_output.aspx?form=4
Or on Twitter at mattpark1 or “askBoeheim”.

The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometime simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: http://tunein.com/radio/WGVA-1240-s29191/

I will be posting my rough transcript the night of the broadcast focusing on my questions, the team and their last and next games and then a second post the next day on other things that were discussed.

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS

First hour:

“Coach, it was nice to see the team get back on the winning track. Some players who haven’t been consistent contributors seem to be coming around now: Tyler Roberson, Malachi Richardson, DaJuan Coleman. One player I still think could still make a significant contribution the rest of the way is Franklin Howard. He got significant playing time last night but you didn’t seem too happy with his performance. How far is he from becoming a reliable contributor to the team?”

Second hour:

“Coach, people are talking about your last two press conferences. You seemed very unhappy. Some think it’s about the reporters and their questions. My theory is that you are thinking about the team and not satisfied with their performance. Could you give us what it’s like from your viewpoint to have to do a press conference right after a tough game? “

COACH BOEHEIM
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. They are now doing two hour shows. I will do two posts: one on the night of the broadcast on the issues directly relating to the team on the other the next days on other things that were talked about.)

Matt congratulated the coach on the win over BC. JB: “Our defense was good. Our offense was bad. People say the game was ugly and hard to watch. If you don’t make shots, it’s not going to be pretty. You have to try to win anyway. It’s just not a pretty game when they don’t go in. The defense did some things better covering people and moving around better. BC didn’t have a strong inside game. Their big kid is pretty good but didn’t play well. We got a lot of good looks but only shot 4 of 17 from three. We need to make at least 6-8 of those.”

Matt noted that BC’s 40 points was our lowest pints allowed vs. a conference opponent since 2009, although we only gave up 39 to Marquette in the 2013 NCAAs. (Actually that was a conference, game at the time, too.) JB added “We shouldn’t have more than 5-6 turnovers. We could have gotten maybe 8 more shots.” Matt said the shot distribution was very balanced but JB feels “Mike needs more shots.” Tyler Roberson “set the tone early. They (the refs) must have felt at halftime that he was getting away with stuff. On one call he went straight up.”

Regarding the UNC game: “We played at a high level for a long time. Then the defense broke down and we had a couple of bad offensive possessions. “

Liam of Pompey wanted to know if the call disallowing Trevor Cooney’s three pointer at the shot clock buzzer. It looked good to him. JB: They looked at the clock and it was zero. They just started to review these things during games a couple of weeks ago. Before that they were just reviewing them at the end of games. Usually you are going to miss those.” Matt noted that for years teams have been hitting buzzer-beaters on us at the end of the shot clock and we almost got one of our own. He had a chance to see the replay and they had to do frame by frame to make the decision but the ball was on his fingertips when the clock went to zero. He asked Jima bout the time against Clemson when there were two seconds on the shot clock on an inbounds play and Trevor his a three and was fouled and they ruled the foul was before the shot- the first second, apparently. JB: “That should have been an “and one”. If it was, we would have won.

Pat also beat me to the phone. He had two questions. He wanted Jim to compare DaJuan now to when the season started. JB: He’s moving better, getting a feel for it. It’s a rare situation, getting two years off and then coming back. He’ll continue to get better, based on everything I see and hope to see. “

Pat also would like to see us (sometimes) use a ‘small’ line up of “anyone you want” at center, Mike and Malachi at forward, Trevor and Frank Howard in the backcourt. JB: “We could play that wat. Both Mike and Mal can play defensive forward. We did that a little in the Bahamas. I guess we could do it, but probably not much. Frank has got to play better. He missed some time with illness.”

That set up my first question. I like to open with a joke to relax things. I told Coach that after the UNC game, some had told me that “It’s going to be a long year.” I said that at my age, I like long years. He laughed but advised people not to judge this team based on how they did against the Tar Heels, who are one of the best teams in the country. Actually, if we judge this team by that standard, they look pretty good as we almost pulled out that game.

Regarding Franklin Howard: “He was held back when he was sick. He made a couple of bad defensive plays and had a really bad travel when no one was near him. He missed some shots, (0 for 4).” I’d made a comment about how Frank could allow Mike Gbinije to play off the ball. “Mike played off the ball in the second half and got off only 2 shots. He’d gotten 12 shots off when he had the ball in the first half. He was playing the point in the Bahamas. It may be easier playing without the ball but we need him to take shots.” But he agreed “Frank needs to be more of a factor for us to be as successful as we’d like to be….it was good to get Frank more experience”

I couldn’t figure out what game he was talking about with the 12 shots in the first half and the 2 shots in the second half. In the BC game, Mike got 5 shots off in the first half when Howard played 11 minutes and 3 shots off in the second half when Howard got 3 minutes. Against UNC, Mike got 5 shots in the first half when Frank played 5 minutes and 8 in the second half when Frank didn’t play. Maybe that’s what he meant.

Later I called in my second question and JB took up almost the rest of the show in a stream-of-consciousness reply covering several subjects. I’ll try to organize it. I should note he never seemed angry, just confused that someone would think he was angry with the reporters at the press conference.

“People try to psychoanalyze all the time. I have no problem with reporter’s questions or anything. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Sometimes I just answered it. I’m upset if we didn’t play well. The reporters are just doing their job. Some of them are just students. I stopped reading the Daily Orange because of the crazy stuff they write in there. I don’t want to get mad. I don’t listen to radio shows.”

Then he complained that people who call in to radio shows keep complaining that he only plays 7 guys. “Oklahoma, Duke and SMU play 6-7 players and they’re doing pretty good. People think I like to play 6-7 guys. I like to play 8 guys. But most teams these days are going with 6-7 guys. I don’t want to put a guy who can’t play and we lose the game.” I joked that for a guy who doesn’t listen to the radio shows, he seems to have a lot of information about what it said on them. “People get back to me.”

“I’m not going to say nice things about the team after a bad game. We have to get better. In 40 years we’ve always had teams that could play against anybody. We’ve only had 3-4 teams that struggled. People look at the last 2-3 years but we’ve been well above .500 in the conference. Don’t look at 1-2 years. measure 3-4-5 years.

Regarding Tyler’s fouls: “It’s not a technical thing. We want him to be aggressive. But when you have three over the backs in a row...”

“I haven’t been really upset a reporter in a long time. Only when they say something untrue. The press conferences are fine. I just say what I think about something. I don’t have any problem. I chuckle a little bit about obvious things. I wasn’t mad at the reporters. I don’t dislike press conferences. The Papers report what I say in them very accurately.”

“I’m entertaining people. But that’s not really me. People think that if you are quiet and introspective, you are stuck up. I try to say hello to people. If I wasn’t a basketball coach, people wouldn’t want me to say hello to them. I just get caught up in basketball. That’s why I don’t go to bars. People want to talk. When I got to restaurants I just want to eat an go home. People are nice and respectful. Camera phones can be a problem. But if you aren’t successful, they don’t want to take your picture. In 40 years I’ve never had a confrontation with a fan. ”

If JB had his way, I think deep down these would be his encounters with reporters (JB being Plumley/Sam Elliott). ;):)

Thank you, Steve, for asking those questions, especially the last one. He's an introvert in a highly public job. The Post Standard expose 20 - 25 years ago cut deep. In almost all other social/public situations, he is warm-natured, generous, self-deprecating and gracious. The NCAA investigation opened a wound that had never closed. Add in a couple teams that have struggled greatly in the past two years, and voila! Bitter Press Conference Boeheim emerges.

We have a coach who is larger than life who has brought enormous success and stability to our program. He is the public face of Syracuse, and that is why I squirm when he gets snarky. When he rides off into the sunset we will never see his like again.

...
I couldn’t figure out what game he was talking about with the 12 shots in the first half and the 2 shots in the second half. In the BC game, Mike got 5 shots off in the first half when Howard played 11 minutes and 3 shots off in the second half when Howard got 3 minutes. Boeheim says things.

Glad coach addressed that 3-point shot by Cooney off the inbounds pass with 2 seconds left, which rotted my socks at the time it occurred. If you have 2 seconds left to shoot, and the clock doesn't start until you catch the ball, and you have to catch it, control it and it has to leave your hand before the 2 seconds are up, how can someone possibly have time to foul you BEFORE the shot?!? Everything that happens within that 2 seconds is part of the act of shooting! Ridiculous and, yes, we would have won the game without that blunder.-VBOF

Boeheim says things.

Yeah. That makes no sense. That's why I hate when people drop quotes from coaches/announcers...they're filling time, they say things.

It sounds like the opposite of what JB thinks is what actually happens most often. LOL

If you're fouled immediately on the catch - or before the catch. I did thing he was fouled while in the motion though - that call was just stupid.

PART 2

Gomez said that he was “playing hurt”. He had an MRI for a rotator cuff issue. Jim did not suggest he hurt it by shoveling too much food into his mouth but did question how it would impact his career. “I can’t talk because my shoulder hurts.” Gomez suggested he might need steroid injections and he might wind up looking like Mark McGwire. JB: “You’d need a lot more injections than that!”

Jim never got a lottery ticket. “It’s throwing money down the drain.” What are his lucky numbers? “4’s and 8’s. I don’t know why.” That was two of the numbers in the drawing. He’d have won $7.00.

There was a discussion of teams around the country, including Iowa who was in the process of taking down Michigan State again, (that #1 ranking didn’t last long). “They had Iowa State beat, too. They have a senior center, a senior forward and two guards. They can win the Big 10. We played them last year. They got in the tourney the last two years. They got just about everybody back and are full seniors.” (That must be nice.) “Michigan State is not a gre4at offensive team by any stretch of the imagination. Illinois has had a bunch of guys hurt the last couple of years… Wisconsin and Minnesota are down. Rutgers and Penn State are struggling. There are 4-5 tams at the top. Indiana is really coming on. (Thomas Bryant is shooting 72% and scoring 12.2 points in 22 minutes a game. He’s averaging 5.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks.)

“Wake Forest and Duke “had some tough road losses. Louisville is playing very well. They showed strong last year and are on a good run. Virginia Tech is much improved and very tough at home. Duke lost two first round picks and a senior guard but Grayson Allen can shoot and drive and is very physical. They have a lot of good freshmen. Plumley is one of the most physical and athletic guys in the country. Virginia lost two really good players. The conference is better overall.” Matt noted that there are 6 AXCC teams in the Top 21 teams in the rankings. “North Carolina is ranked 5th but both their losses were while Marcus Paige was hurt.”

South Carolina lost so the only undefeated team in the country is SMU, whose coach, Larry Brown, also had to serve a nine game suspension. . “Their goal is to not lose, since they can’t play in the tournament. They only have 7 scholarship players but lots of good seniors. “ Kansas needed a police escort to get through the snow to play West Virginia, whom the papers are calling “Press Virginia” because of their defense. “They have a lot of depth and multiple guys who can score. Bob Huggins is as good a coach as there is in the country. Not a lot of teams have 9-10 guys. Oklahoma plays 6-7. Duke Plays 6-7. Most of college basketball is 6-7 guys.”

Missouri is the next school on the NCAA chopping block. “They’ve been involved in another thing for a few years. But I’m done talking about the NCAA.” UNLV fired their coach, Dave Rice in January, an unusual move. “He did some good recruiting but they didn’t play as well as some people thought they should.”

The SU women were beating Pitt to go 13-4 and 3-1 in the conference. “And they could have won two more games: Tennessee and North Carolina.”

There was extensive discussion of the new rule pushing back the date that players can declare for the draft so they can attend NBA try-outs and be evaluated by NBA people. “They only invite about 50 players so if you aren’t one of the fifty, you’re not going to get a high draft pick. Kids will have more information upon which to make a decision. It’s a good rule.” Doesn’t it put a coach in a bind, not knowing if a player will be coming back until later? “You’re not going to recruit anyone good in April anyway. That was a dumb reason for the original rule. Hopefully guys will come back who should come back. If they don’t’ get drafted, their options are over. The overseas opportunities aren’t what they used to be. You’re only going to make $40-50,000. The coaches have no restrictions so they have you physically train 2 ½-3 hours a day and then basketball practice. It’s not fun and not that easy over there. You need to get as good as you can get here… It’s the best rule they have passed in a long time. Almost every players I’ve told has been drafted lower than I said. Tyler Ennis was told he’d be drafted 8th. I said 10th-15thj. He was drafted 18th. Jerami Grant was told 14th. (He went 39th). Chris McCullough was drafted only by the Nets (29th overall). It’s worked out for the three guys and I am happy for them.” (But he wishes they were on this team.) Is there a downside to the new rule? “No. Everyone is a winner. A 2-3 day workout is a pretty good evaluation. If only one of eight people tell a player he’ll be drafted he’ll go. You need a consensus. Kids have a right to be better informed. “

Do NBA coaches call college coaches about their players? “No but their assistants as the directors of player personnel do to get background on players. They talk to everybody when they are thinking of drafting someone.

Somebody had picked the all-time NBA small forwards. JB: “LeBron, if you can put him there. Bird would be #2 but you could call him a power forward. Elgin Baylor (who was #5), was 6-5 or 6-6 but would get 30 today.” Scottie Pippin was #6. Dominque Wilkins was #10. The others were Rick Barry, Dr. J and Kevin Durant. “A good group.” Gomez said the coach was pretty good at picking them. “Russell was the best center. Oscar Robertson would be one of the best 2-3 point guards. He was 6-5 220 and could back down guards, who were about 6 feet at the time, and shoot over them.”

“I was glad they told Dolph Schayes before he died that they were going to retire his number. I went to his camp when I was 13 and worked there for years and got to know him well. He had a great sense of humor. He went to college at age 13 or 14 and came out with an engineering degree. No better guy ever- ever!”

Katie wanted to know what Jim’s favorite TV shows to “binge watch on NetFlix” were. Jim said he “hasn’t figured out Netflix yet”. He likes The Blacklist and The Good Wife. He tapes them but is behind on watching them. “I can’t sleep during the season so I watch them at midnight.”

John in Liverpool noted that Jim’s son was named athletes of the week. JB: “He’s got more of his mother than me. He’s got her good looks. I’m glad he got nothing from me. He’s tall but that’s probably his mother, too. John said that his son played golf in high school and that he never got to see him play. “It’s probably better that way.” This provoked a discussion of Jordan Spieth who started this year where he left of last year by winning the first tournament by 8 strokes. “He’s a great young player with a great attitude and everybody likes him. He just focuses on golf. He got $53 million in a deal from Under Armor.” (Give me $53 million and I’ll have a great attitude, too and everyone will like me.)

On the NFL coaching carousel: “I don’t know if Tom Coughlin has any interest. If he doesn’t catch on this year it will probably be too late. By next year there’s be a bunch of new hot coordinators in the running Once out, it’s hard to get back in….The boss fired the head coach and kept the coordinator for continuity. You don’t know what’s going on… Kelly will be a good fit in San Francisco. They pushed the other coach out at Oregon so he could get the job…..I hope Chandler Jones is back and ready to play.”

The Spurs were playing the Cavaliers. “Two of the top three NBA teams. The playoffs and semi-finals will be great. The Warriors are 36-3, the Spurs 34-6 and the Cavs 27-9.” Matt noted that the Warriors were a 17 point favorite over the Lakers. How things have changed from the old days. “Tim Duncan just keeps rolling along… The Cavs when healthy can be as good a team as Golden State. ..Danny ferry did a great job in Atlanta and he’ll do a good job with the Nets. He’s a good guy who made a mistake.” (Per Wikipedia he “read aloud verbatim an 'offensive' comment written in a scouting report".

Gonzaga is doing a reality show called “The March to madness”. Would SU consider doing such a show? “We haven’t been contacted.” Would there be a downside? I don’t think so as long as the players knew what was going on.” (I’m sure the last thing JB needs right now is a reality show about SU basketball.) Gonzaga’s big man is injured and “they aren’t the same team that we saw in the islands.”

A caller wanted to know if Jim “treats all players equally”. John Wooden once told his players not to expect him to treat them all the same because they aren’t the same and that would be the most unfair thing he could do. “I have certain rules. You have to show up on time. I work some guys harder in practice because they didn’t play in the games. Jerry Jones once said that if Emmett Smith is late for a meeting he probably wouldn’t complain because he’s the best player in the game and has won two Super Bowls. A rookie might be on his way home for the same thing. As far as rules everybody is held accountable.” (Hear that, NCAA?) “If you aren’t ready to play, you shouldn’t be in college. It’s a great opportunity and environment to get an education. If you’re not motivated, you’re not going to make it. I’ll motivate you in practice. Getting pushed becomes a habit. That’s important, too.” Are there “gamers” who aren’t great practice players. “Not so much. If you are missing free throws in practice, you’ll miss them in games. Some guys get more up for games. The really good ones get ready well and then play well, too. “

Alabama-Clemson was “a great football game. Alabama had all the big plays. The Clemson quarterback was phenomenal. The onside kick was a good gamble the way Clemson was moving the ball. It was amazing how open that5 tight end got. Clemson is a good defensive football team. Watkins kept Clemson in the game….Nick Saban will stay. He’s making $8-10 million a year, as much as he could make in the NFL. He’s a control guy. There’s too many things you can’t control in the NFL. He will finish his career at Alabama.”

Gomez closed by saying that next time he wanted to ask JB about a 131 year old guy they’d found in Brazil. “I don’t’ have a lot of thoughts on that. If you’re 50 you’ve got 81 years to go.” Gomez noted that JB would only have about 40 years to go, (actually 60). “No thanks.”

If you reach 131 you have earned the right to wear pants that fit. I think we would all agree with that.

If you reach 131, the last thing you're worried about is how your pants look.
