Jim Boeheim’s radio show is on Thursdays from 7-9PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show originates from Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse on Erie Boulevard in Syracuse. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. The second hour, which begins with the conference season, is hosted by Gomez, a local radio personality.
You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-424-8599. Or you can submit questions from this page:

Or on Twitter at mattpark1 or “askBoeheim”.
The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometime simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: http://tunein.com/radio/WGVA-1240-s29191/
I will be posting my rough transcript the night of the broadcast focusing on my questions, the team and their last and next games and then a second post the next day on other things that were discussed.
MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS
First hour:
“Coach, it was nice to see the team get back on the winning track. Some players who haven’t been consistent contributors seem to be coming around now: Tyler Roberson, Malachi Richardson, DaJuan Coleman. One player I still think could still make a significant contribution the rest of the way is Franklin Howard. He got significant playing time last night but you didn’t seem too happy with his performance. How far is he from becoming a reliable contributor to the team?”
Second hour:
“Coach, people are talking about your last two press conferences. You seemed very unhappy. Some think it’s about the reporters and their questions. My theory is that you are thinking about the team and not satisfied with their performance. Could you give us what it’s like from your viewpoint to have to do a press conference right after a tough game? “
COACH BOEHEIM
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. They are now doing two hour shows. I will do two posts: one on the night of the broadcast on the issues directly relating to the team on the other the next days on other things that were talked about.)
Matt congratulated the coach on the win over BC. JB: “Our defense was good. Our offense was bad. People say the game was ugly and hard to watch. If you don’t make shots, it’s not going to be pretty. You have to try to win anyway. It’s just not a pretty game when they don’t go in. The defense did some things better covering people and moving around better. BC didn’t have a strong inside game. Their big kid is pretty good but didn’t play well. We got a lot of good looks but only shot 4 of 17 from three. We need to make at least 6-8 of those.”
Matt noted that BC’s 40 points was our lowest pints allowed vs. a conference opponent since 2009, although we only gave up 39 to Marquette in the 2013 NCAAs. (Actually that was a conference, game at the time, too.) JB added “We shouldn’t have more than 5-6 turnovers. We could have gotten maybe 8 more shots.” Matt said the shot distribution was very balanced but JB feels “Mike needs more shots.” Tyler Roberson “set the tone early. They (the refs) must have felt at halftime that he was getting away with stuff. On one call he went straight up.”
Regarding the UNC game: “We played at a high level for a long time. Then the defense broke down and we had a couple of bad offensive possessions. “
Liam of Pompey wanted to know if the call disallowing Trevor Cooney’s three pointer at the shot clock buzzer. It looked good to him. JB: They looked at the clock and it was zero. They just started to review these things during games a couple of weeks ago. Before that they were just reviewing them at the end of games. Usually you are going to miss those.” Matt noted that for years teams have been hitting buzzer-beaters on us at the end of the shot clock and we almost got one of our own. He had a chance to see the replay and they had to do frame by frame to make the decision but the ball was on his fingertips when the clock went to zero. He asked Jima bout the time against Clemson when there were two seconds on the shot clock on an inbounds play and Trevor his a three and was fouled and they ruled the foul was before the shot- the first second, apparently. JB: “That should have been an “and one”. If it was, we would have won.
Pat also beat me to the phone. He had two questions. He wanted Jim to compare DaJuan now to when the season started. JB: He’s moving better, getting a feel for it. It’s a rare situation, getting two years off and then coming back. He’ll continue to get better, based on everything I see and hope to see. “
Pat also would like to see us (sometimes) use a ‘small’ line up of “anyone you want” at center, Mike and Malachi at forward, Trevor and Frank Howard in the backcourt. JB: “We could play that wat. Both Mike and Mal can play defensive forward. We did that a little in the Bahamas. I guess we could do it, but probably not much. Frank has got to play better. He missed some time with illness.”
That set up my first question. I like to open with a joke to relax things. I told Coach that after the UNC game, some had told me that “It’s going to be a long year.” I said that at my age, I like long years. He laughed but advised people not to judge this team based on how they did against the Tar Heels, who are one of the best teams in the country. Actually, if we judge this team by that standard, they look pretty good as we almost pulled out that game.
Regarding Franklin Howard: “He was held back when he was sick. He made a couple of bad defensive plays and had a really bad travel when no one was near him. He missed some shots, (0 for 4).” I’d made a comment about how Frank could allow Mike Gbinije to play off the ball. “Mike played off the ball in the second half and got off only 2 shots. He’d gotten 12 shots off when he had the ball in the first half. He was playing the point in the Bahamas. It may be easier playing without the ball but we need him to take shots.” But he agreed “Frank needs to be more of a factor for us to be as successful as we’d like to be….it was good to get Frank more experience”
I couldn’t figure out what game he was talking about with the 12 shots in the first half and the 2 shots in the second half. In the BC game, Mike got 5 shots off in the first half when Howard played 11 minutes and 3 shots off in the second half when Howard got 3 minutes. Against UNC, Mike got 5 shots in the first half when Frank played 5 minutes and 8 in the second half when Frank didn’t play. Maybe that’s what he meant.
Later I called in my second question and JB took up almost the rest of the show in a stream-of-consciousness reply covering several subjects. I’ll try to organize it. I should note he never seemed angry, just confused that someone would think he was angry with the reporters at the press conference.
“People try to psychoanalyze all the time. I have no problem with reporter’s questions or anything. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Sometimes I just answered it. I’m upset if we didn’t play well. The reporters are just doing their job. Some of them are just students. I stopped reading the Daily Orange because of the crazy stuff they write in there. I don’t want to get mad. I don’t listen to radio shows.”
Then he complained that people who call in to radio shows keep complaining that he only plays 7 guys. “Oklahoma, Duke and SMU play 6-7 players and they’re doing pretty good. People think I like to play 6-7 guys. I like to play 8 guys. But most teams these days are going with 6-7 guys. I don’t want to put a guy who can’t play and we lose the game.” I joked that for a guy who doesn’t listen to the radio shows, he seems to have a lot of information about what it said on them. “People get back to me.”
“I’m not going to say nice things about the team after a bad game. We have to get better. In 40 years we’ve always had teams that could play against anybody. We’ve only had 3-4 teams that struggled. People look at the last 2-3 years but we’ve been well above .500 in the conference. Don’t look at 1-2 years. measure 3-4-5 years.
Regarding Tyler’s fouls: “It’s not a technical thing. We want him to be aggressive. But when you have three over the backs in a row...”
“I haven’t been really upset a reporter in a long time. Only when they say something untrue. The press conferences are fine. I just say what I think about something. I don’t have any problem. I chuckle a little bit about obvious things. I wasn’t mad at the reporters. I don’t dislike press conferences. The Papers report what I say in them very accurately.”
“I’m entertaining people. But that’s not really me. People think that if you are quiet and introspective, you are stuck up. I try to say hello to people. If I wasn’t a basketball coach, people wouldn’t want me to say hello to them. I just get caught up in basketball. That’s why I don’t go to bars. People want to talk. When I got to restaurants I just want to eat an go home. People are nice and respectful. Camera phones can be a problem. But if you aren’t successful, they don’t want to take your picture. In 40 years I’ve never had a confrontation with a fan. ”
