OTHER TOPICS They’d just heard about Harrison Ford’s plane crash. Apparently he’s not one of the actors JB knows, (like Kevin Costner), but “he seems like one of the good guys. He’s a really good actor.” They wished him well. The NCAA tournament will be “Kentucky against the field. They could get beat if they get down 8-9 to a really good team. It might be hard for Virginia if they don’t have their best player.” Wisconsin was playing Minnesota and a 20 point lead had shrunk to 6. “it’s the youth of the players, the three point shot and crazy things can happen on the road.” The Badgers won by 13. “The big 4-5 teams are Kentucky, Virginia, Duke and Wisconsin. Gonzaga, Villanova and Wichita State are not quite in that group. Kansas, Iowa State or Michigan State could get hot but nobody not ranked will win it. Connecticut won last year but won’t be in the tournament this year.” Wayne Tinkle of Oregon State, (Montana’s coach when we waxed them in the NCAAs, resulting in Seth Davis’ wardrobe malfunction: ) played his senior walk-ons in a rivalry game with Oregon and lost by 3. JB: “UNC starts their seniors on senior day every year. He won 16-17 games with a team that won 10. He’s recruited two top 40 players and they never got that before. They’ll be in the top 25 next year. We had one of our best games ever against him.” This is the 25th anniversary of the death of Hank Gaithers. “He played against us with Bo Kimble when they were freshmen. We pressed them and were up by 30 at halftime, (we won 102-68: their coach compared SU’s 1985-86 team to the Walton Gang) . They got on Loyola-Marymount and scored over 100 points a game. It was fun to watch. (Gaither’s death) was similar to Conrad McRae. He was playing in a summer league and the Lakers were looking at him. He didn’t want to take his heart medication because it slowed him down. “ JB’s going to have a busy weekend. The NC State game is at Noon Saturday. He’s going to watch his kids play in the sectional playoffs on Sunday and then head over to the post season banquet. Matt referred to Jamesville-Dewitt as “powered by 2 Boeheims and an Autry. “They need more of them.” Jim has bene following Section 3 hoops a lot, although he can’t comment on individual papers, (such as a guard from Bishop Ludden one caller asked about). “Ludden needed a miracle to get there. Just a tremendous, (there’s that word!) win for them. CBA has gotten J-D a couple of times this year but you never know. “ Might we see JB in Glens Falls” “You never know.” (We don’t even know if the championships will be held there: http://poststar.com/news/local/part-of-glens-falls-civic-center-wall-collapses-hoops-games/article_fec78380-c296-11e4-b07d-67c722cf6b3a.html Dan Dakich, “who is very outspoken”, will be speaking at the banquet. Mike Hopkins will get the Vic Hanson award. “Then we’ll start getting ready for next year. You work the year around.” Matt asked Jim about Russell Westbrook, who has had four straight triple-doubles. “They don’t want to play against him. No one wants to guard him. Dion had a 20-10 day but nobody notices when the other guy has 49-15-10. He’s like Kobe or Michael. Those guys are out to beat you from the moment they step on the court. He’s 6-4 but plays like the he’s both 6-10 and 5-10 at the same time. We called him “The Monster”, (when coaching the Olympic team). Matt made a joke that the only thing he’d compare that to is the way Gomez goes at his surf and turf and JB said it was a valid comparison but “that was the only thing I’d compare Gomez to”. Mat then noted that Oscar Robertson had not only averaged a triple-double for a season but averaged that over his first 5 years, (not in every season but his average for those seasons was a triple double). “He was astonishing. He was big for a guard in his day at 6-5, 220. Michael Jordan was the best, with LeBron or Kobe just behind but Oscar Robertson was phenomenal. “ ESPN had an article listing the most ‘animated’ coaches: 1) Bo Ryan (“He’s animated but I wouldn’t make him #1) 2) Bob Huggins (“He’s definitely up there.”) 3) Mike Krzyzewski (“He’s not that excited.”) 4) Jim Boeheim (“I wouldn’t put him up there”. Matt noted that he’d kept his coat on.) 5) Tom Izzo (No comment.) 6) Frank Martin (“If looks could kill. I’d be afraid to play for him. But he’s a nice guy off the court.) 7) Rick Pitino, (“He’s up and down but too old to be here.”) 8) Fran McCaffrey (“He’s up a lot.”) 9) Tom Crean “He’s up and down the whole time.”) 10) Buzz Williams (“He sweats more than any other coach.”) Jim is interested in the progress of the lacrosse team. “They’ve got a face-off guy. If not they might have lost to Army. Last year every game was a struggle. This year they get up on Virginia 7-0. It might have bene hard to beat Virginia without that one player. They should change that rule.” Brad in Liverpool asked what Jim had “taken away” from his experiences with USA basketball. “You learn a lot from other coaches, good out of bounds plays, structuring your practice, how hard you need to work. The skill level of the players is scary. It makes your own players look bad- and we don’t have bad players. It’s nothing for those guys to make 14-15 straight shots from the three point line. When you tell them something, they get it right away or in an hour. With college kids, it’s at least a couple of weeks. The best high school players become college players and the best college players become NBA players.” Ed called in and asked if some Syracuse players had gone to the NBA and later regretted doing so. “For the most part, they want to go and take their shot. If you want to make it you can figure out a way to do so. Sometimes an extra year might help your placement in the draft. It’s hard to tell. You can’t be sure another year might have helped. On the other hand some 4 years guys might not have made it earlier. Dave said that the Canadian trip two years ago seemed beneficial and wondered if we’d be doing that again. Jim agreed it was very valuable and said that a school gets to do that once every four years. Dave also said that that shaggy haired kid playing for J-D, (Jimmy Boeheim), reminded him of Pete Maravich. Jim just said “He’s working hard and getting better….It’s harder to watch your kid play than to coach. You want to yell at anybody. People coach my team from the stands so I do it, too.” Gomez noted that John Cailpari, who took his team to the Bahamas, doesn’t stress defense during these trips. He’s looking for spacing and basics and lets everybody play. JB: “Sometimes guys play well on those trips and don’t play well when they get back.” A caller wondered if he had any pets. The Boeheims have a 7 year old shih tzu. “She likes me win or lose. I spoil her with treats”. Julie likes you too, coach. A caller from Florida said that the temperature down there “is awesome”. He had just finished reading “Bleeding Orange” and wonder how Jim could remember all those details. “I have a good memory for things that happen in games. I can remember 2 plays from a high school game we should have won. Jack McCallum put it down in my words in a way that worked. The caller wanted to know what his feelings were about the Big East. “My emotions are mostly good. There were a lot of battles. You mellow after a while, (or Melo?). The caller said he’d been to JB’s 800 and 900 wins. Will there be a 1`000th? “I hope so.” Gomez announced that “Spring is coming”. Jim said “Not quite yet. I won’t think about that until April.” Donna in Oswego reminded Jim that when he signed his book there, she brought him a cupcake. He thanked her. She said he was a great coach and hopes he will get to take some time off. “Yes, we will.”. Yes, he will.
