The early shows tend to be in a one-hour format. I'll post a summary of them the same night. When they do two hour shows. I will do two posts: the Matt Park segment the night of the show and the Gomez segments the next day.

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS

1st Segment Question:

“Coach, in your press conference after the Virginia Tech game you said “We isolate a lot because that’s the best way for us to score.” We have a team full of jump shooters. The referees can’t be relied upon to put is on the line. Why is isolation the best way for us to score, rather than passing the ball? “

2nd Segment Question:

“Coach, I’ve recently re-read Marty Glickman’s book “The Fastest kid on the Block”. In it he describes broadcasting basketball games in the late 40’s an early 50’s in a section called “The Dumpers”:

“Before the game and during the halftime…bookmakers would go along the sidelines in front of the stands and call out the odds-on bets. During the half they’d pay out bets on points scored, shooting percentage, whatever. They would pass the dollars up along the rows of stands, the way you might pass a soda or a hot dog…There was booing and catcalling that had little to do with the winning and losing, but a lot to do with the point spread…There was plenty of suspicion that college games were being fixed but I refused to believe it…like many others, I have the capacity not to believe things I don’t want to believe….When the stories of fixing games broke…I put the blame…on the bookmakers because bookies provided the machinery whereby players could dump games…But the evil traced as well to every sports fan in America who bet on games; every individual who bet with a bookmaker or in those college football pools or competed in contests on radio to pick winners. We were all at fault because we were making it possible, through gambling, for these things to happen.”

There was a huge ‘dumping’ scandal in 1951, another ten years later, one involving Boston College in the late 70’s and one involving Tulane in the 80’s. Now the floodgates have been opened up and we are bombarded with adds for sportsbooks in all media. Sports talk show hosts spend segments of their shows talking about the bets they made. I feel like we’re back in that arena Marty described.

My question is: do the things the universities now do for athletes, the NIL opportunities and the big money that can now be made playing pro ball here and abroad insulate modern players from the corruption that ruined the lives of players in Marty’s era?”

Twitch: I’ll improvise a question after listening to the rest of the show.

COACH BOEHEIM
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. The quotes may not be verbatim –they are from my scribbled notes. I have not knowingly changed the meaning.)

Matt Park described the upcoming schedule as “NBA-like”. Jim Boeheim replied: “it is what it is. You can’t worry about it. Just go ahead and play.”

That was the brief opening. After a break they went right to may first question. JB: “We do se tup screens every time. But that doesn’t get you open shots against a good defense. We set more screens than anybody. Buddy’s often on a shorter guy. Jesse id a good roll guy. When we penetrate on Buddy’s side the defensive player goes with him and with Joe and Cole, too. We drive when the opportunity is there. Jesse developed into a guy who can score when they don’t come in to help. Frank was really good. 15 rebounds is tremendous. But he can’t score or block shots like Jesse.”

“Boston College will shoot better and we can shoot better, too.” Matt said that the Eagles were “a whisker away from sweeping Notre Dame”. Notre Dame is 12-3 in the league and have won 5 in a row. They are the only unranked major college team with 12 conference victories. “Their seniors haven’t been in the tourney and they want to go.” Jim predicted “we will get a lot of teams in the tourney and they will do well.” Matt said “they will need the same number of at large teams”.

The Orangewomen were down 14-26 to Virginia Tech. Later Matt said that tech was shooting 67% and was ahead in rebounds 18-7. He suggested that involved a lot of offensive rebounds that went from inside back out to the shooters. It was more than our women could deal with and they wound up losing 53-102. It’s going to be along way back.
Women's Basketball vs #23/24 Virginia Tech on 2/17/2022 - Box Score - Syracuse University Athletics

Jake in New York City said that Jimmy “dinks and danks and hits threes but lately he hasn’t been hitting threes. Is that due to Covid?” JB: “Jimmy hit two threes in his last game. He’s around 37% for the season. He’s fine. I can’t fault this team on offense. Our defense has really been the problem.” Matt said that we are now 17th in the country in offensive efficiency and #208 in defensive efficiency.” Jim: “I’m surprised that 150 teams are worse than we are. I see improvement it’s just not enough yet. Our rebounding has really improved.”

Matt then moved on to “Orangemen in the Pros” Elijah Hughes began to see action with the Trailblazers but his shots haven’t bene falling: he’s 1 for 11 from three with them. Still, JB said: “Some players just need an opportunity and then they are all right. Some players never get that opportunity.” Dave Bing and Dolph Schayes were named to the NBA’s 75th anniversary team. Jim knew them both well. He was Bing’s roommate at SU and a counselor at Dolph’s camp. “Great guys and great players”. Carmelo’s on the team, too: NBA’s 75 Anniversary Team Players | NBA.com

In the ACC, Virginia tech has now won 6 games in a row. “They are a really good, balanced team. ”Duke beat Wake Forest on that slam-in just before the buzzer but Wake almost won it on a 70 footer. Coach B didn’t have any further updates on Coach K. “It was a hot building and he was feeling a little light-headed. U of Miami became the latest team to beat Louisville. Notre Dame needed overtime to beat Boston College. That big center named Post has Covid and didn’t play. Neither did TJ Bickerstaff. Jim said he expects both back for our game. Georgia Tech has lost three in a row but “they still have players”. Pitt was up by 20 against UNC and held on to win. JB: “Teams are very close. Duke is the best but struggled in their last two home games.”

“We are playing well. We won 4 games in a row and were ahead, [even, actually] with 6 minutes to go at Virginia Tech. This week had two days off and then normal practices. You have to stay sharp and keep pushing. Bourama was mentally not quite there, {against the Hokies], Two years is a long time. We have to be patient. I think he can do things nobody else on our team can do.”

Matt talked about the big lacrosse weekend coming up with a men’s and women’s double-header against nationally-ranked teams and some jerseys going up on the walls of the Dome. Jim said “the women are strong and the men have a chance to be good.” They talked about Roy Simmons who will be honored. Jim said he’s known him since 1962. “He’s one of a kind. he allowed his players time to realize that lacrosse is not the only thing. We try to do the same thing. I need 2-3 hours a day and the games but you have to learn to be an adult. That’s what college is all about.” He said his team did thinks like paintball and bowling as bonding exercises.

Josh in Boulder is “a little down now that there are so few games left”. [There aren’t few games, just little time left.] he said that he saw signed in the Virginia tech game that the team “came together and came be really good. Our three guards are really good. The question is: can Cole shoot and play defense.” JB: “We miss Jesse for his sheer size. Frank is doing a good job but we need points from all 5 positions. I think frank is capable of getting double figures from rolls and his rebounding.”

Tom in Pulaski is “not liking the weather here.” Matt: “It's Pulaski, Tom.” [But is it Chinatown?] He wanted to know if we’’ll have to win the ACC Tournament to get into the NCAA tournament. JB: “We have to win a lot of games and will probably have to win the ACC Tournament. You have to concentrate on winning the next game. Everybody in the league thinks they can win the ACC Tournament. We have a chance.”

Iowa was playing Michigan and got a Laettner shot to end the half. JB: “That will have 1 time in 20 attempts.“ They lost in the end, anyway.
Michigan vs. Iowa - Game Videos - February 17, 2022 - ESPN

Steve in Liverpool volunteers for two movements: to get Jim his 100 wins back and to get pearl’s #31 back on the court in the Dome at the point where he launched that shot. JB: “I agree 100,000%” [Interesting math] I guess I don’t’ have much influence. We should do what we can do to make that happen.”

Jim has watched the Olympics “a little bit”. He watched the end of the women’s hockey game. “We had a lot of chances in the last 3-4 minutes.” Mikaela Shiffrin has not failed to medal in all three races she was in. That happened, per matt in 3 of her previous 90 events. Jim: “The course is slippery and she was going all-out. They should have three chances and allow for one slip-up.”

MLB and the player’s association met for 15 minutes and then quit for the day. JB: “They don’t’ need anything. They should just play ball. Maybe they should let congress figure it out. (Laughs). It’s the world we live in – people can’t talk to each other.”

I’ll do the Gomez segment tomorrow. As a bonus, there are the answers to my other questions:

Jim doesn’t think that players are fully insulated from corruption by the financial advantages they have over the players of past eras. “No matter how much money you are making, if somebody shows you haw you can make more...the great players won’t do it because they want careers in the NBA. But some influential guys could do it. Boston College didn’t have their best players on that team involved. I’m more concerned about the ease of gambling. It’s going to put a lot of in a bad position. It’s too easy to gamble and too hard to win.”

I noted Jim’s comment that he doesn’t have the influence to get Pearl’s #31 back on the court. In the Twitch segment, I asked him how much influence he will have on the selection of his successor. “That won’t be my call. The Board of Trustees, the Chancellor and the Athletic Director will make that call. I coach the basketball team but I don’t decide whose number is on the court. I had no say in hiring the Athletic Director or his staff and don’t want to have a say. This University is run the right way. I’m sure I’ll have some say [on the new coach] but I won’t control anything.”

I also asked him, after he talked about calls they didn’t get. What sort of comment he’d be fined for and what he can get away with saying. “You can say there should have bene more calls or less. You can’t impugn the integrity of the officials or call them cheaters. Jimmy Valvano once asked a ref if it’s OK for him to think that a referee is a _______. The ref told him that he’s free to think whatever he wants. Jim responded “OK, I think you’re a _______.” He got called for a technical.

PART 2

Gomez asked Jim how he was feeling. “Couldn’t be better. We’re getting ready for the next game and then a lot of other games. Practice has been helpful.

I called in my question about gambling but summarized rather than just reading off the Glickman quote. Jim laughed when I said fans were booing and cheering for teams based on the point spread. (His answer is above.) Jim when on to say that Charles Barkley always has a plane waiting to take him to Vegas after his show. Gomez has heard about a deal where an Atlantic City casino was offering free rooms for anyone who wants to go there to gamble. Jim: “it’s not going to be free. You can’t beat them if you go there and play their games. Poker gives you a fairer shot. There’s an element of luck but it’s still mostly skill.” A caller named Donnie said that he’s bene to Casinos and wonder what his best course of action if he did so again. Jim: “Don’t bet. You’ll be a loser in the end.” Donnie asked Jim and Gomez not to tell his wife that he’d bene to a casino and they agreed to remain mum about it.

Gomez said he’d been watching some women’s sports and “the athleticism has grown exponentially in the last 5 years.” JB: “They are fun to watch play. They play the game the way it should be played.”

Somebody made a full-court put and this is the anniversary of UCLA’s Baron Davis hit an 89 footer.

Davis:
I couldn’t find the recent put but I like this one: 84-year-old woman sinks putt across basketball court to win new car
JB: “We lost a game once on one of those. It wasn’t fun.”

DeMar DeRozen broke a Wilt Chamberlain record by having 7 straight games of 35 or more points while making half his shots. Jim suggested that Wilt must have done that 100 times in a row.
Watch DeMar DeRozan pass Wilt Chamberlain for NBA record

The lakers without Anthony Davis “can’t do it. They have too many problems. They could get blown up and have no players next year.”

Jim had had a minor confrontation with Paulie Scibilia on Orange Nation that afternoon, something about fans wondering what the point of the rest of the season was. Paulie said he was just passing along the attitudes of people who had called into the show. Their producer, Jordan, had wondered what the fuss was over whether we wound up with a winning or losing record. Jim had jumped on that question, saying that you always want to win the next game if you have any pride in yourself. He semi-apologized for jumping on Paulie, (who produces the coaches show and was there) but repeated his sentiments.

Gomez noted Rutgers winning streak against ranked teams. JB: “They are tough at home. It’s a good league.”

Matt in Syracuse praised the coach for his work in the community. JB: “I appreciate that. Julie does most of it. It’s very rewarding to help people.” Matt is going to attempt a three-point shot in a Dome contest. He’s thinking of trying it from pearl’s spot. Jim advised him “If it’s for money, take your best shot”.

Stefan from Utica wondered what the plan was for the rest of the season with Jesse out. JB: “Frank’s been there all year. He had a good first game. Bourama is back so I thin ki we’re OK there.

Utica College is now Utica University. Do they call it UU?

Michael Jordan and Jim Brown, two GOATs, share a birthday. Mike is 59 and Jim is 86. Gomez: “There’s no two bigger names”. Jim: “They’re pretty big.”

On the Russian skater who crumpled under pressure. “They put too much pressure on her. Their administrators gave her some medications. But why a heart medication? It just got to her. It’s amazing that they are so young- after age 15-16 they can’t do the jumps anymore. These kids go to camps or schools at age 6 or 7 and work 6 days a week, all year long. It’s not a great life. It builds champions but I hate to see what happens when they don’t make it.”

The switched to Twitch, (twitched to Switch?) and someone asked about the golf tournament with the stadium seating and the rowdy crowd. Jim said that “it’s had to get withing 30 feet of a golfer when there’s 30,000 but that tournament draws 200,000.”

If assists are over-rated, what stats does Coach look at? “Field goal percentage – ours and theirs, rebounding, then turnovers.”

Lacrosse has had 5 coaches in 105 years. Jim is impressed that the Simmons coached for a combined 67 years. [Does Jim intend to catch them?] Jim said that he’s attended virtually every home lacrosse game since he came here in 1962 and watched many of the road games as well.

A question was asked: Is it harder to teach players to defend the high post or the short corner jumper? [Which corner is the ‘short’ one?] Jim picked “the foul line. We know they will go there and try to protect it. All defenses have vulnerabilities. We try to limit good shots.”

Jay Bilas said he thought officiating was “the worst it’s ever bene”. Our JB: “It’s a hard game to work. I just don’t want it to be so physical.” At that point the screen froze, they had technical difficulties and when they came back they were talking about babysitters. But the brief discussion led to my fourth question, above about what Jim could be fined for saying. [I wonder if the ACC agrees with his interpretation.] They talked about Chris Paul bumping a referee. That’s a no-no. “He’ll have a suspension for sure.” Jim said that he’s friends with several ex-refs. He sees Froggy Paparo a lot. He even likes Higgins and Burr. It’s easier to like them when they are retired.

Does Jim have any regrets in his career? “No regrets. I’ve tried to do things as they should be done. I’ve bene surrounded by good people.” Upon thinking of it some more, he added. “I didn’t become a father until age 41. Then I had three in 18 months at age 54. It’s a blessing to have kids.”

Tom brady has 45 to 1 odd sof being the NFL MVP next year. Jim: “I’ll cover that bet. He’s not coming back. He’s a 12 month a year guy, dedicated to it every day and he’s not doing it now.”

“What recruits have broken you heart?” JB: “1-2 or two of them break your heart. I don’t talk about it.” Gomez suggested Chris Mullen. Jim: “He was in St. John’s orbit. He was a little slow. You worried about his speed.” [When did we stop worrying about speed?] “He was a great player.”

They got to talking about player specialization. “You have to pick your sport if you got to college…The AAU gets you coemption against the best players in the country.”

There’s a lawsuit to declare college players to be employees. “It could destroy college athletics. There’s no money to pay them. Schools are pooling NIL money and giving it out to players. Some players are making $2000,000. Tennessee has $25 million.”

Gomez asked if coach was bringing any food home this time. Nope. Any dessert – cannoli or cheesecake? JB doesn’t like either one.

I have to think Kenny Anderson was #1. I don't know if we beat UNLV that year but it would have been a he!!uva game.

I'll go with Perkins as #2.

Did Jim say he had three kids at 44?

Thanks as always for the recap.

BlackSquirrels Top 5 Howler Power Rankings, 2/18/22

1. “We do setup screens every time. But that doesn’t get you open shots against a good defense. We set more screens than anybody.”

Agree that most plays feature screens, but setting more screens than ANYBODY? That’s a stretch.

Most SU plays seem to feature an early screen up top to get into the offense. Then there might be an off-ball screen to free someone up for a jumper, or, more likely, an isolation. I tuned into an Iowa game this week and they were running off-ball screens all over the place.

2. On the MLB labor situation: JB: “They don’t’ need anything. They should just play ball.”

They can’t play because they’re locked out. I love how JB complains about how dumb Cuse fans can be and his opinions on other sports are generic, “Jimmy calling from a mobile phone” sports radio caller takes.

3. Georgia Tech has lost three in a row but “they still have players”.

It sounds like JB was very low-energy this show if this is the best compliment he could come up with for an opponent. I think he was more effusive for Lehigh earlier this year.

4. “we [the ACC] will get a lot of teams in the tourney and they will do well.”

We shall see.

5. The lakers without Anthony Davis “can’t do it. They have too many problems. They could get blown up and have no players next year.”

WHAT? Is Melo leaking some insider info about LeBron to JB?

Thanks for all your effort creating the summary!!

Who was Pearl’s shot against, can’t believe I’ve forgotten. I must be getting old.

the Marburys, King Rice. Jay Bilas too, Bilas was first West Coast kid he recruited. Anthony Davis, until Kentucky came through with the bag. Bazley hurt too. It remains to be seen but I would have liked to see J.J. Starling in orange
