PART 2 Gomez asked Jim how he was feeling. “Couldn’t be better. We’re getting ready for the next game and then a lot of other games. Practice has been helpful. I called in my question about gambling but summarized rather than just reading off the Glickman quote. Jim laughed when I said fans were booing and cheering for teams based on the point spread. (His answer is above.) Jim when on to say that Charles Barkley always has a plane waiting to take him to Vegas after his show. Gomez has heard about a deal where an Atlantic City casino was offering free rooms for anyone who wants to go there to gamble. Jim: “it’s not going to be free. You can’t beat them if you go there and play their games. Poker gives you a fairer shot. There’s an element of luck but it’s still mostly skill.” A caller named Donnie said that he’s bene to Casinos and wonder what his best course of action if he did so again. Jim: “Don’t bet. You’ll be a loser in the end.” Donnie asked Jim and Gomez not to tell his wife that he’d bene to a casino and they agreed to remain mum about it. Gomez said he’d been watching some women’s sports and “the athleticism has grown exponentially in the last 5 years.” JB: “They are fun to watch play. They play the game the way it should be played.” Somebody made a full-court put and this is the anniversary of UCLA’s Baron Davis hit an 89 footer. Davis: I couldn’t find the recent put but I like this one: 84-year-old woman sinks putt across basketball court to win new car JB: “We lost a game once on one of those. It wasn’t fun.” DeMar DeRozen broke a Wilt Chamberlain record by having 7 straight games of 35 or more points while making half his shots. Jim suggested that Wilt must have done that 100 times in a row. Watch DeMar DeRozan pass Wilt Chamberlain for NBA record The lakers without Anthony Davis “can’t do it. They have too many problems. They could get blown up and have no players next year.” Jim had had a minor confrontation with Paulie Scibilia on Orange Nation that afternoon, something about fans wondering what the point of the rest of the season was. Paulie said he was just passing along the attitudes of people who had called into the show. Their producer, Jordan, had wondered what the fuss was over whether we wound up with a winning or losing record. Jim had jumped on that question, saying that you always want to win the next game if you have any pride in yourself. He semi-apologized for jumping on Paulie, (who produces the coaches show and was there) but repeated his sentiments. Gomez noted Rutgers winning streak against ranked teams. JB: “They are tough at home. It’s a good league.” Matt in Syracuse praised the coach for his work in the community. JB: “I appreciate that. Julie does most of it. It’s very rewarding to help people.” Matt is going to attempt a three-point shot in a Dome contest. He’s thinking of trying it from pearl’s spot. Jim advised him “If it’s for money, take your best shot”. Stefan from Utica wondered what the plan was for the rest of the season with Jesse out. JB: “Frank’s been there all year. He had a good first game. Bourama is back so I thin ki we’re OK there. Utica College is now Utica University. Do they call it UU? Michael Jordan and Jim Brown, two GOATs, share a birthday. Mike is 59 and Jim is 86. Gomez: “There’s no two bigger names”. Jim: “They’re pretty big.” On the Russian skater who crumpled under pressure. “They put too much pressure on her. Their administrators gave her some medications. But why a heart medication? It just got to her. It’s amazing that they are so young- after age 15-16 they can’t do the jumps anymore. These kids go to camps or schools at age 6 or 7 and work 6 days a week, all year long. It’s not a great life. It builds champions but I hate to see what happens when they don’t make it.” The switched to Twitch, (twitched to Switch?) and someone asked about the golf tournament with the stadium seating and the rowdy crowd. Jim said that “it’s had to get withing 30 feet of a golfer when there’s 30,000 but that tournament draws 200,000.” If assists are over-rated, what stats does Coach look at? “Field goal percentage – ours and theirs, rebounding, then turnovers.” Lacrosse has had 5 coaches in 105 years. Jim is impressed that the Simmons coached for a combined 67 years. [Does Jim intend to catch them?] Jim said that he’s attended virtually every home lacrosse game since he came here in 1962 and watched many of the road games as well. A question was asked: Is it harder to teach players to defend the high post or the short corner jumper? [Which corner is the ‘short’ one?] Jim picked “the foul line. We know they will go there and try to protect it. All defenses have vulnerabilities. We try to limit good shots.” Jay Bilas said he thought officiating was “the worst it’s ever bene”. Our JB: “It’s a hard game to work. I just don’t want it to be so physical.” At that point the screen froze, they had technical difficulties and when they came back they were talking about babysitters. But the brief discussion led to my fourth question, above about what Jim could be fined for saying. [I wonder if the ACC agrees with his interpretation.] They talked about Chris Paul bumping a referee. That’s a no-no. “He’ll have a suspension for sure.” Jim said that he’s friends with several ex-refs. He sees Froggy Paparo a lot. He even likes Higgins and Burr. It’s easier to like them when they are retired. Does Jim have any regrets in his career? “No regrets. I’ve tried to do things as they should be done. I’ve bene surrounded by good people.” Upon thinking of it some more, he added. “I didn’t become a father until age 41. Then I had three in 18 months at age 54. It’s a blessing to have kids.” Tom brady has 45 to 1 odd sof being the NFL MVP next year. Jim: “I’ll cover that bet. He’s not coming back. He’s a 12 month a year guy, dedicated to it every day and he’s not doing it now.” “What recruits have broken you heart?” JB: “1-2 or two of them break your heart. I don’t talk about it.” Gomez suggested Chris Mullen. Jim: “He was in St. John’s orbit. He was a little slow. You worried about his speed.” [When did we stop worrying about speed?] “He was a great player.” They got to talking about player specialization. “You have to pick your sport if you got to college…The AAU gets you coemption against the best players in the country.” There’s a lawsuit to declare college players to be employees. “It could destroy college athletics. There’s no money to pay them. Schools are pooling NIL money and giving it out to players. Some players are making $2000,000. Tennessee has $25 million.” Gomez asked if coach was bringing any food home this time. Nope. Any dessert – cannoli or cheesecake? JB doesn’t like either one.
