(There has been no articles giving details of this year’s Jim Boeheim show. I had to call into the radio station to find out that the first show will be tonight. I’ll assume there has been no changes since last year. No schedule had been posted but the show is usually on a Thursday unless there is a game or a holiday that night.)

Jim Boeheim’s radio show is on Thursdays from 7-8 or 9PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show will likely start out on Zoom and not be at a local restaurant. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. The second hour, which usually begins with the conference season, is hosted by Gomez, a local radio personality.

You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-424-8599. Or you can submit questions from this page:
Submit a Question! - Syracuse University Athletics
Or on Twitter at mattpark1 or “askBoeheim”.

The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometime simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: TuneIn | Free Internet Radio | Live News, Sports, Music, and Podcasts

I will be posting my rough transcript the night of the broadcast focusing on my questions, the team and their last and next games and then a second post the next day on other things that were discussed.

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS

“Coach, I heard an interview on the radio with a journalist who covers both Duke and North Carolina. He was asked about our January 2nd game with the Tar Heels. He said that they had had trouble in the backcourt as both their players there are freshmen but that they might have the biggest, strongest front court in the country and he didn’t see how Syracuse could match-up against them. It brought up two questions:
- What is the likelihood that our centers, (Sidibie, Edwards, Anslem and Ajak), will be able to help us in that game?
- If you had a choice between having an advantage in the backcourt or the frontcourt, which would you prefer? “

COACH BOEHEIM
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. The quotes may not be verbatim –they are from my scribbled notes. I have not knowingly changed the meaning. In recent years they have started out doing one hour shows and then shifted to two hour shows in January. When they do two hour shows. I might do two posts: one on the night of the broadcast on the issues directly relating to the team on the other the next days on other things that were talked about.)

Matt suggested that the Northeastern game offered a few ‘teaching points’ for the coach to cover with his team. Coach laughed and said that he’d gone over the first 10 plays of the game and found 2-3 teaching points on each one. “Turnovers were a plus. We only had 10 which is reasonable, and we made a lot of steals. We got 7 points directly off of steals. Really, that’s the only reason we won the game. We were terrible defending the three in the first half, better in the second half. We got pretty good shots. Buddy got all good looks. He was 1 for 12 but five times we got the rebound and scored, so that’s more like 6 of 12, although we’d rather he made the shot to begin with.” Matt pointed out that both turnovers and free throws were 2-1 in our favor. JB: “We did a pretty good job of adjusting to not making shots. We went tot the basket and scored off the glass. They are so concerned with our shooters that Quincy was able to get a lot of offensive rebounds. Allan can do that, too. Woody got beat on a couple of three point shots. We got some turnovers with the press. Our two best scorers went 1 for 16 – and we won! Alan tried to go behind his back on the first play and was in a funk all night after that. We need Bourama back. Hopefully, he’ll be working out by the end of the month. Marek’s done a good job.“

I called in my questions. Jim didn’t take the bait on the subject of frontcourts and backcourts. “You’ve gotta have both to be successful it’s a five man game.” On the subject of North Carolina’s frontcourt: “Last ear they had the same two inside guys and we beat them in the tournament. We have to take advent age of them on defense. They will have trouble covering our shooters. Our two big guys will be better against bigger teams than smaller teams.” He didn’t explain what he meant by “our two big guys”. We have four centers and five guys 6-10 or more. “it will depend o the progress they make. Bourama will be back by the end of the month.” Matt suggested it might take a while after that for him to be really ready to play at a high level. JB: “You can walk around all you want. Playing basketball is something else. We won’t know how it’s healing or if he can run and jump. It is easier with a center than with guards. Guards have to get their timing back. If Buddy had had the same shots two weeks ago, he would have hit 6-7 of them…. Winning is not easy. We had to pull it out of our hat to beat Bryant and last night. When you aren’t making shots, it’s a difficult game.”

How did Quincy get all those rebounds? “we set a lot of screens, got guys a lot of angles. Rebounding is all position. He’s very strong around the basket. He finishes or gets fouled, (or both), He and Marek have bene playing very well. Joe had some glitches but he’s playing well. “

Dave from Minneapolis called for the first time in a long time after being a regular caller. In fact, it’s bene such a long time that he now lives in Boston. He would normally have bene at the BC game but had to watch it from his home, 10 miles away. He wanted to know about the team’s ‘Covid routine’. Jim: “It’s so difficult, we’re trying to work our way through it. Every day is something different. You wake up hoping that nobody on your team or the other team has tested positive. We never come together except in in huddles at the games. If we do get a positive test, the other players could still play. Meals are hotel food, spread out. There’s nobody at the games. The crowd can’t pick you up. I watched three games after I got home last night and the road team won all three. The crowd impacts basketball a little more than football. Football fields are separated a bit from the stands.” Matt noted that road games at Rutgers and Boston College usually would have had a strong Syracuse presence in the stands. “I can pull my mask down to be heard because I’m twenty feet away from everybody. This has been a year like no other.” (No, it hasn’t been the Masters) We should be thankful that they came up with a vaccine so quickly. What if we’d had to wait 2-3 years? We couldn’t have survived that. There’s a fighting chance that September could be pretty good.”

Josh in Boulder, (SU has fans everywhere, it seems), wants to see more of Marek’s ‘baby hook shot’ as it’s “impossible to block”. Jim said that normal centers are going to have a hard time covering him, although he’ll have a hard time stopping the big strong ones at the other end. He was made last night because he missed 2-3 shots he should have made. He does a lot of good things with his passing and defense. John Bol has become pretty good at drawing charges.

Matt looked up the best home court advantages according to KenPom and said that the top three were Colorado, West Virginia and Texas Tech. They went over some performances of future opponents: Pitt is 2-0 on the road and blew out Miami. They seme to be on the way back. Duke beat Notre Dame by 10. “they are looking good – good movement with lots of talent. They lost to two top ten teams: Michigan state and Illinois.” Notre Dame’s schedule has been very hard- they’ve played Michigan State Ohio State and Duke. “they were lucky to have caught Kentucky when they were down”. A game between Virginia and Wake Forest has been called off so the Cavs scheduled a confrontation with #1 Gonzaga for the day after Christmas. “They are integrating new players. They are a defense-oriented team so it will be easier”.

What kind of a challenge was it to prepare for such a hastily-arranged game as the Northeastern game. “Not much – we had our normal two days of practice for a game. When we are in a tournament we don’t have that time. If Northeastern was Providence, people wouldn’t have been upset over the close game. And Northeastern could give Providence a good game. We’re more than tested. Bryant had a sub score 17 points. Geo Baker wouldn’t have score that much. We’re not lucky – whoever plays the best in the last 4-5 minutes is going to win a close game and we did pretty solid.”

On Buffalo: “They could be 5-0 but they were missing their two big men for a couple of games. They will probably win their league and get into the tourney. They’re physical and strong inside and their guards are physical and really quick.” Matt noted that Coach Whitesell was undergoing contract tracing. He was doing practices via Zoom and can’t coach the game at all. Jim said that he didn’t know that but that “he’s got good assistants and they will do a good job. They are still on the 14 day mark when everyone else is switching to 7 days. It’s crazy.”

Someone named Robert tweeted, asking “What’s holding up Jimmy from transferring and is it still destined to happen?” JB:” He’s finishing his under-graduate courses at Cornell and will make a decision in the spring. This summer will be a complete free-for-all with the new transfer rule. The Supreme Court is looking at the NIL”
Supreme Court to hear NCAA case on athlete compensation
“Lets just hope the vaccine works and get the biggest thing behind us.”

Matt brought up Chris Bleich. JB: “The only good thing about it is that he was hurt and might have missed games anyways. We have some good linemen coming in and guys coming back who got a lot of experience. We hung in there with Clemson and Notre Dame with a lot of freshmen. That’s not too bad.”

The ACC title game, (4PM Saturday), will be going on when SU tips off against Buffalo at 6PM. JB: “maybe we can see some of it. I think Clemson will win. They are the better team and Trevor Lawrence didn’t play in that game. They had to use a freshman. Trevor is the best player in college football and they will have a revenge factor. Notre Dame is real good and Book is quite a quarterback. We could have two teams in the tourney which would be good because all the teams in the ACC will get more money. Matt said that Clemson was a 10 ½ point favorite. Jim said “They are trying to get people to bet on Notre Dame.” Matt noted that Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea used to be an assistant at SU, (he was Scott Shafer’s linebacker coach from 2013-15). He’s now going to become head coach at his alma mater, Vanderbilt, (good luck with that!).

Jim Phillips, the AD at Northwestern, is going to be the new ACC commissioner. JB: “He’ll be real good. He’s smart and we’ll need leadership. At this time the NCAA is doing very little. It will be up to the conference commissioners. They will have a big role.”

“College basketball is crazy. I don’t care what their name is- they will have good players..” Matt mentioned a player for Massachusetts who had recently scored 37 points, (Tre Mitchell”. JB: “We recruited him. That’s college basketball. Everybody’s got somebody and the good teams aren’t quite as strong as they used to be.

As always, SWC, you're a hero for the work you do!

I couldn't give this quote more love if I wanted to. Honestly, I'd call him 12-12 as the other 6 misses eventually ended up in scores on subsequent possessions.

"Buddy got all good looks. He was 1 for 12 but five times we got the rebound and scored, so that’s more like 6 of 12, although we’d rather he made the shot to begin with.”

Without the misses, the rebounds would not have been possible.

Love JB, but he is going so far out of his way to defend his son that its becoming bad look. Trying to remember him defending another player that goes 1 for 12 like this...

Never has. That is a ridiculous take. I have never heard any coach make a comment like that. It really isn't needed. Shooters have bad games. Just leave it at that.

That is source of the frustration.
JB feels the need to spin for Buddy.
Buddy Boeheim is a good player.
He is a player that can help a team win a national championship.
He isn’t going to be a multiple year all conference player nor does he deserve the amount of minutes he has averaged.

I wish Buddy was Bryce Alford. If he could do more than the minutes wouldn’t be an issue.
He is a shooter. Shooters have off nights.
I hate this spin JB plays who he trusts.
JB didn’t trust Brandon Bayer but he played him in the NCAAT and the team won.
You can’t trust somebody if you never give them a chance to show you.

It’s bullchit and causes the frustration.

Not only is the Budster on track to be the greatest shooter in Cuse history, he’s also on track to be the greatest MISSER in Cuse history!

Buddy will provide a lot of joy and a lot of missery.

Wow, I stopped reading Boeheim's comments after that creative math example. Why listen to anything he has to say after that one. That's ridiculous.

There's another great Boeheim line here:
"If Northeastern was Providence, people wouldn’t have bene (sic) upset over the close game."

If Duke was Binghamton we'd beat them easily every time.

Gotta love JB logic!

For the record, my fingers typed 'bene'. He actually said 'been'.

I have to agree. I don’t understand these comments at all. This is prob the first time I’ve completely disagreed with one of his takes on Buddy.

What JB was saying was that the need to defend Buddy's shot takes a potential rebounder away from the basket and allows a player like Guerrier to get the ball and score. It's almost a pass. There is some substance to that for both Buddy and Joe. Griffin wasn't getting his shots because he wasn't doing what he needed to do to get his shots and then he was allowing that to impact his defense. You might not agree with his take but it makes a certain amount of sense and he said similar things about his other outside shooters, especially the much criticized Trevor Cooney. He's just never taken the point this far before.

Coon Dog lives forever. His shooting thirst can never be quenched.

We all get Buddy can shoot the ball well.
He had an off game is all JB has to say.
Nobody doesn’t believe he doesn’t deserve to be a starter.
The spin is just stupid.
By this logic an open shoot for a mediocre shooter is a bad shot because their is an extra defender to grab the rebound.
By trying to argue that Buddy is getting close defending so it’s easier to offensive rebounder with less defenders on the glass is stupid.
Next he will say our players know the angles off the Dome rim to get into position and grab rebounds.

Jim is hurting Buddy with these comments. Buddy is a piece of the team. The amount of playing time is the frustration. Last year the argument was we don’t have depth on the bench. That isn’t the case this year.

But is it false?

But is it false?
I went back and looked and 3 of Allen Griffin’s 4 shots were contested.
So by that logic JB would like those shots for offensive rebound potential.

It’s stupid to even to say what he did.
He does a disservice to his son.

Somehow I feel that this dialogue will continue as long as Buddy is on the team and will only multiply if Jimmy transfers here. I really hope I can hold myself back from joining in the discussion because I truly think it is going nowhere.

I don’t care what player is playing too much. I call it the way I see it.
Those comments are a joke.
Name another player the coach has gone that far to spin a terrible game from?
He has destroyed kids like Tyler Roberson who didn’t have an effort issues.
Those comments are a joke. 1 for 12 is really 6 for 12 because of offensive rebounds GMAB.

I don’t care if Jimmy transfers here to sit on the bench or be depth.
