Jim Boeheim’s radio show is on Thursdays from 7-8 or 9PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show will likely start out on Zoom and not be at a local restaurant. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. The second hour, which usually begins with the conference season, is hosted by Gomez, a local radio personality.

You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-424-8599. Or you can submit questions from this page:

The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometime simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: TuneIn | Free Internet Radio | Live News, Sports, Music, and Podcasts

I will be posting my rough transcript the night of the broadcast focusing on my questions, the team and their last and next games and then a second post the next day on other things that were discussed.

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS

“Coach, I think last night’s game was one where having a home crowd could have made a difference. We might have given the team an emotional pick-up when they needed it. I also think that’s it’s going to be hard to win any game where we don’t have Bourama or Quincy because that makes us too weak inside and on the boards. I was glad to see Robert Braswell finally find the range. I think he’s a talented player and will give you another option as the season goes along.

In recent years, when we’ve had trouble hitting from outside we would start driving to the basket to score or get to the foul line. In this game we were hot early but them cooled off. Against Buffalo, we tried 56 two point shots, 19 three pointers and 42 free throws. Against Pittsburgh we took 22 two point shots, 38 threes and 5 free throws. Why were we unable to get the driving game going?”

COACH BOEHEIM
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. The quotes may not be verbatim –they are from my scribbled notes. I have not knowingly changed the meaning. In recent years they have started out doing one hour shows and then shifted to two hour shows in January. When they do two hour shows. I might do two posts: one on the night of the broadcast on the issues directly relating to the team on the other the next days on other things that were talked about.)

They started with some highlights of Matt Park’s broadcast of the Pitt game. Then they went to commercial. I put in my call and while holding, heard Matt say that he would send some kind of link to Julie. I got the impression Julie is probably the tech savvy one in the Boeheim family.

There was one caller ahead of me, Donnie from Liverpool who said that he’d watched the game with his wife, who had a question Donnie couldn’t answer because “I was too drunk”. The question was: “What is a zone?” Jim wasn’t that interested in describing a zone and referred Donnie to a video he had done on the subject and advise Donnie to tell his wife that “It isn’t man-to-man.”
There are several videos on You-Tube. Click on “Championship productions”:

(Where does the center abandon the basket and run out to cover the corner jumper?)

I came on and read my first paragraph. Jim agreed that that was a game where having the fans there could have made a big difference. I bolstered my question when I heard him tell Brent Axe this afternoon that “We just don’t have good drivers on the team this year”. If that’s true, how did we get to the line 42 times vs. Buffalo? JB: “Their defense wouldn’t let us drive to the basket. They backed off. They don’t let you drive. You have to pull up and make shots. We got great shots. Buddy and Joe are not drivers. They were both out ten straight days. Shooting and rhythm are the skills most affected by a lay-off.”

“Quincy had two bad calls against him. There was no contact on one in the first half and in the one at the begging of the second half the guy was holding him. We had four offensive fouls in the first half and bad rebounding and shooting in the second half. Pitt beat Northwestern. We’ve played four close games and that was the one we had the best chance to win and it was the only one we lost. It was down to the wire. We just didn’t make the plays at the end. If we’d made a shot, people would be looking at that game in a different way. You pay a price for missing so many days of practice and four games.”

Matt asked if the games can be made up, noting that moving the Pitt game opened a date up on February 13th. JB: “It will be hard. We have three straight road games, (actually 2 before that and one afterwards). The other teams have schedules, too. I wanted to start early and give us two weeks to work with. When we were getting ready for the season, we had unbelievable rhythm and phenomenal shooting. You lose all that when you are out so long. We do the best we can. It’s all we can do. Pitt is big and physical. It’s hard to get to the basket. The game got away in the first half with the charges and missing wide open threes. We should have been up by 24-25 points. That’s what happens when you don’t play. You do things you don’t do. We did things in practice today that were comical. We did some good things in that game. We dug down and made plays and got a lead. We couldn’t quite finish. You’re not going to win all the close games.”

Matt asked about Robert Braswell. “Woody hasn’t been able to practice. He probably shouldn’t have played at all. Robert has been making his shots in practice. He still has pain in his knees and has trouble getting by people. We had the shots we needed to make. There were a couple questionable calls on Quincy. Foolish mistakes in the first half came back to haunt us.”

Another caller, (didn’t get the name), complained about “a couple of offensive fouls on Joe”. JB: “They are a team that draws charges. The two on Joe were correct. The one on Kadary was right. We need to practice and paly and get into rhythm to make shots. Then we’ll be a different team.”

On the inbounds play at the end: “it was supposed to be a lob pass to Quincy. He was guarded by a smaller guy who fell down. Marek didn’t see him. It should have been his only look. If it was football, he’d be the primary receiver. That happens. He didn’t give it enough time to develop.” He admitted that Marek got tired playing against big guys for 40 minutes. “That’s a lot.” He described a play where Marek could have made a lay-up but passed the ball back out. “One bucket could have made the difference”. It wasn’t just the fouls that limited Quincy’s contribution. “he didn’t have much jump. There were 3-4 offensive rebounds he could have gotten and didn’t.”

Matt took a “tour around the league”. What was interesting is that the first team he referred to was Georgetown, who had just lost to Butler. “They have had four games where they led by at least 12 points and lost. They were winning for 30 minutes. They have good size and shooting. They have good shooters and ball-handers and the big guy in the middle. They could easily have won 3-4 more games.

Louisville beat Virginia Tech. The Hokies “were a buzzer shot from beating Villanova, although they got waylaid by Penn State.” Boston College “could easily have beaten Duke. They had the lead and a couple of turnovers beat them.” Virginia “was down against Wake Forest. Their offense is better but their defense is worse.” Miami “is struggling with their roster.” Clemson and North Carolina State “are two of the better teams in the league. They have veteran players.” Clemson is #1 in the league in the ‘Net’ rankings. Somehow, we are #2. Iowa was on TV. “Luke Garza is a horse. They can be scored on but their offense is very good.”

Matt asked about Floyd Little. “He was a great human being. there was nobody better. He was always smiling, positive. He was the most elusive back I’ve ever seen in college. He was a phenomenal player and a better guy. Everybody benefited from being around him. Any fan or the last guy on a team could talk to Floyd and he’d talk as long as they wanted. He could talk with anybody and be friends with anybody.”

Then matt asked about John Thompson. “he was bigger than life. He had a huge impact. There are so many black head coaches who wouldn’t have their job except for John. He blazed an unbelievable trail. For about ten years that was one of the greatest rivalries ever. It was as exciting and tough and physical as any- maybe more physical than any.”

The Brooklyn Nets are wearing retro uniforms to honor Derrick Coleman.
Matt likes the look. Jim said that it’s a lot better than what Miami is wearing.
Miami Heat unveil dramatic new finale edition of Vice uniforms

Matt noted that Drazen Petrovic played with Derrick on that Nets team. JB: “He would have had a great career. We played him when he was 17 and playing for a traveling team. He was a great player.” He died on the Autobahn:

Any comment son what happened in Washington? “Yesterday was one of the worst days in American history.” He then told the story of the fan who had season tickets for 38 years and is giving them up because “He knows Trump won” and Coach said that the election was decided.

How is the team emotionally responding to losing the big lead to Pittsburgh? “It’s an incremental comeback. You need a lot of days. Leads and comebacks happen.”

Had to review that inbounds replay after reading JB's comment supposed to be a lob pass to Quincy. He was guarded by a smaller guy who fell down. Marek didn’t see him...He didn’t give it enough time to develop.
The guy stumbled briefly, then QG kind of stood behind him. QG appeared to miss an opp to flash in front of the guy across the lane before he gathered himself. Regardless, the QG option didn't appear to be developing at that point and Marek's time was short by then. But that's just me.

He definitely had the opportunity twice to inbound to AG who seemed to be the only guy moving to get open. I think he was trying to run the play though and was tuned in to Quincy. I DVR'd the game so I tried, unsuccessfully, to try and change the outcome of that game killer.
