Jim Boeheim’s radio show is on Thursdays from 7-9PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show originates from Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse on Erie Boulevard in Syracuse. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. The second hour, which begins with the Big East season, is hosted by Gomez, a local radio personality.

The first hour is eventually, (it can take weeks) podcasted on the SU Athletics website on this page:

http://suathletics.com/podcasts.aspx

You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-437-7644. Or you can submit questions from this page:

I will be posting my rough transcript of the first hour the night of the broadcast and will probably do the second hour the following day.

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS

First hour:

“Coach, you turned around the Binghamton game with the press. You played on a team that pressed for 40 minutes. Matt said during the broadcast that you didn’t think this was one of your better pressing teams, but that you seem to say that every year. Is it that you don’t feel your team performs the press well or is that you just don’t feel that it’s effective against the good teams these days?”

Second hour:

“Coach, it seems that Ron Patterson, Tyler Roberson and BJ Johnson are kind of at the end of the bench, auditioning for a spot, if there is one, in your rotation for the conference games. Could you analyze their games at this point and what contributions they might be able to make as the season goes on?”

COACH BOEHEIM

(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject)

With Matt Park:

They talked about the lull in the schedule that occurs every year at this time. It’s the end of the academic semester. There are exams to take. They squeeze practices in. They can even be a good break from exams. But it can be a little disruptive. But they will be practicing 1 /12-2 hours in the morning and that’s when the game is on Sunday, (actually noon). They will be off for four days from the 21st to the 25th. Matt joked that he hoped the players “don’t’ have too much pie”. Jim wasn’t worried. “I’ll burn it off them. Players use up 5000 calories a day.”

Coach says that St. John’s is a “much, much better team” than they have been. They have a good inside presence, (JaKarr Sampson, Chris Obekpa and the wonderfully named God’sgift Achiuma) and really good guards, (D’Angelo Harrison, who is a “great scorer” and Phil Greene). “St. John’s has a good team. They can beat anybody in the country. We have to be good and play good, (well), in all phases and on both ends of the court.” He said it would be “a great game. You want to win all games. But it doesn’t have quite the same meaning.” Later a caller named Ed asked what former Big East teams Jim was looking forward to playing. Ed wanted to play Boston College again. Jim said we played BC even before there was a Big East. “But we are looking forward to the challenges of playing all the different teams in the league.”

Matt noted that it has been 50 years since the NCAA tournament was at Madison Square Garden”. That’s the site of the Eastern Regional in 2014. Matt asked if Jim could remember the last year in which we didn’t play a game in Madison Square Garden. “No clue. That’s a long time ago.” It was 1982. “That’s amazing. We love to play down there. We’ve had great turn-outs there. We do some recruiting down there.”

I called in my first question. “We are an OK pressing team. The full court press can help in certain situations. In others, it can hurt your defense. You get too many 2 for 1 situations. You don’t want to give that to a team that may have trouble scoring in the half court. We used the press to come back on Oklahoma State in 2003. It’s good to have it. We work on it every day in practice.”

Matt remembered how it went from 3-0 to 3-11 on 3 three pointers. Then Binghamton had trouble even inbounding the ball. JB: “We got two quick turnovers and scores. We knew they had not had success vs. pressure and we were going to press a little anyway. You put two guys on one in the press and good teams will find the open man….We went to the press early against Binghamton because the effort wasn’t there. You have to have the same effort every night. They weren’t that bad against pressure. We made them look bad.”

Matt attributed the unusual number of fouls we committed to having the use the press early but Jim averred that it had more to do with “2-3 guys coming off the bench who hadn’t played in a while”. (“My Three Sons” had only 8 of our 23 fouls but they had them in 43 minutes.) “They are good players but we should be able to play against teams with them in the game.”

Matt praised Trevor Cooney’s game. JB: “If he gets open shots, he’ll make them. We need to get him in more good situations.” Matt had talked to Gerry McNamara who told him that Trevor had “gotten too bulky and he did a lot more running out doors. He is in great shape and has better footwork.” JB: He lost a few pounds and got quicker….Shooters need time to learn where the shots are and teammates need to find them. It’s not the same as with rebounders or defensive players. ”

They discussed the national picture. “Arizona looks awfully good. Wisconsin is always good. They’ve got more offense this year. Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin will be the class of the Big Ten….Ohio State is very under-estimated. Minnesota is a very good team but they’ll have to fight to make it into the top six. Kentucky, Kansas, Duke and UNC will get better. Kansas lost to top teams- Florida at Florida, Colorado which made the NCAAs last year and will again this year. Baylor is very good. We played a tremendous game to beat them. ..There are so many good teams that can play. Any of the top 20 could make it to the Final Four. Gonzaga is a very good team. Dayton is very good. Wichita State made it last year and they might be better this year. It’s not like football when there are just a few teams at the top and they are all form the south. Basketball has teams from all over, big schools and small schools. …We’ve had parity with few exceptions. Butler twice, George Mason, VCU, Wichita State (have all made it to the Final Four).”

Villanova is “a very physical team with tremendous quickness and depth. They can really shoot. Both the St. John’s and Villanova will be great games for both teams. It will be fun to go back to New York.”

They talked briefly about the Knicks. Jim thinks that when they get healthy they will come back to win what is a lousy decision. They are only 2 ½ back as it is.

A caller, (James?), wanted to k now why our players don’t use more pump fakes like Louisville’s Luke Hancock does and can we get Trevor Cooney to drive to the basket more? JB: “We have talked about pump fakes. We like our players to come off, (picks and screens) and get a clean look. They pump fake if they can’t get one. Trevor is working on his moves to basket and he will get better.“ The caller praised Jim for sticking with Trevor through a rough first season. JB: “It’s what you get the big bucks for.”

Chris wanted to know why we don’t use a box and one against hot shooters. JB: “It’s occasionally effective. The weakness is the other four guys. It leaves a lot of gaps and you make scorers out of non-scorers. With the time you’d spend practicing it, you wouldn’t be as good with your main defense.

John called in to say that “We’ve been in this spot before”, (a highly rated team early in the season). How do you keep the kid’s emotions in check?” JB: “We talk about trying to get better. We don’t want to lose. Everybody’s capable. If you don’t play well, you will lose.” It makes you a better team in the end. You don’t think about the rankings. You play the best game you can. We are just trying to become a better team.” John suggested “The better you play, the shorter the winter gets.”

Matt noted that SU has “been in the top ten for years”. (I seem to reme3ber that being an issue in the last decade.) JB: “We’ve had a good run. It’s always good to be ranked. It’s good for the program and good for the players. You don’t want to be fighting to get there. “

They were watching the football award show and Nick Saban got something. Matt said he’s been offered $10-12 million to move to Texas. JIM: “I don’t think he’ll go.” Matt said that he’d heard that if they don’t get Saban, “they’ll go after another coach that’s won a national championship or a Super Bowl.” JB: “The key will be: does he have a quarterback? He can win a few more at Alabama and he’s 62. It’s not a move to make.” The Florida State kicker won the award for “Best kicker”, whatever they call it. He c=scored more points than Florida State’s opposition.

Dave called in to ask if the SU football program could ever equal the success of the basketball program. Jim felt it could but “there would be a little more difficulty because we don’t have the talent base in New York. New York produces 4-5 Division 1 players a year. Florida and Texas produce 2-3 hundred. If you are in a state like those or Pennsylvania, Ohio or Alabama, it’s easier to win games there.“

“We’ve got a quarterback who looks like he could be tremendous. It’s difficult to get guys like that. A new practice facility always helps. It also helps to be in a good conference like the ACC. It’s a good, not a great conference. We’ve got someone playing for the national championship.”

Matt noted that Jim is getting more technological. He had the BC-Maryland basketball game on his phone. Is the internet next?

I'll do the Gomez segment today.

With Gomez:

Bud, (no, not that Bud) wanted to know how Coach was prepping the team for Duke. The answer, of course, is that he’s prepping the team for St. John’s. “There are some things you might do against other teams but you make adjustments when you get there. Every game counts the same in the standings. We don’t focus on Duke.” The one point I would take issue with is the idea that every game counts the same in the standings. That might be true for a football team that’s trying to claw their way to .500 and get in a bowl. But for a basketball team with hopes of winning the conference regular season title, winning a game against a contender gets you a win and gives them a loss. Beating Duke would have a greater impact than beating Wake Forest.

Gomez wondered what it was like for Steve Lavin to have a veteran coach like Gene Keady on his bench. JB: “You’d like a veteran guy with you who understands the game, particularly if you’re a young coach.” Is Lavin a young coach? And has anybody told Jason Kidd this?

The award show was still going on and Gus Malzahn got the coach of the year award. JB: “They were about 95% to lose both of those games. Florida State is the best team. They have unbelievable talent. Auburn beat Alabama at home and Alabama missed about 14 field goals.” (Actually it was four but if you split up that last play into 30 yard chunks you might get it up to 14.) “Florida State should win but it’s a crazy game. The Heisman is not even close. Johnny Manziel is the best player in the country and the most fun to watch but his team lost a couple of games. Most scramblers don’t throw well but he does and has the mental toughness and instincts. But people who don’t vote for Winston must have been watching baseball games.” (Hear that, Bud?)

They got into an extensive discussion of paying players and there is no doubt where Jim stands. “We’re not going to pay players. There are 300-400 athletes at Syracuse. Players get a $50,000 scholarship, a free college education. Families normally go into debt for that. The players will either make their money in the pros or come away with a diploma. I guarantee you that if you game a player $200, he’d go down and buy $250 worth of sneakers.”

He also didn’t think much of the idea of players being allowed to market themselves. “We’d tell players that if you come to our school you could get a deal for $2-300,000 so we could recruit them. And what about the other guys on the team? It sounds OK but it’s not.“ Maybe the endorsements could go to the athletic department but be shared with all the players? Athletic Departments seem to have no objection to commercial tie-ins.

Gomez asked if player should be able to go to the NBA right away. “I’ve no objection but they’ve got no place to go. The NBA doesn’t want young players. It’s not a college rule. It’s a league rule they negotiated with the union. They’d rather keep players in college for a couple years. They become better players and are more marketable than if they came right out of high school. “

Gomez switched to baseball, asking about the rule banning home plate collisions. Jim is in favor of it. “We should be more concerned about player safety. “ He’s also in favor of more use of replays. “The more you get it right, the better it is. I hate to see championship games decided on a bad call or a perfect game ruined on one. I also hate limits on replays. What if there’s more plays that should be looked at?”

This led to the umpteenth discussion of steroids and the Hall of Fame. “I don’t think they know or don’t k now about steroids. They have to come up with something sooner or later as to how to handle that period. There aren’t 10 players- there are hundreds. What if pitchers were using it too? In the end, you have to just put in the best players.” Coach thinks Pete Rose should be in because he was one of the best players. He’s also like to see Curt Flood and Marvin Miller get in. “They made it possible for these players to make the money they are making. Every player in baseball should be lobbying to get Miller in the Hall of Fame and should refuse to go in until he’s in there.”

I then called in my second question so they could get back to basketball:

Ron Patterson: “He’s a talent. He’s learning to play guard at this level. He played on talent in high school. He has a great teacher in Gerry McNamara. “

Tyler Roberson- “He’s athletic like Jerami Grant but Jerami is a little bit bigger.”

BJ Johnson: “BJ is a good shooter who hasn’t shot well in limited time. He’s still 17- a young, young guy. To be in college at 17 is rare.”

He didn’t estimate their future roles on the team- I guess that’s up to them.

Rod called in- he’s excited about the freshmen on the team and our depth. “Our momentum is at an all-time high. Does it make you feel young?” JB: ”I feel better when we win than when we lose. We play freshmen so they can step in and we don’t have to play too many freshmen all at once. You win with veteran guys. Ideally, we want a couple of seniors, a couple of juniors, a couple of sophomores and a couple of freshmen. You keep a balance. This team is a little young. Kentucky can do it with freshmen but they get 4 of the top 8 players. Most schools get one of the top 10-15 players every 8-10 years.” Actually, most schools don’t get them at all.

Gomez suggested that depth allows us to deal with the new emphasis on the rules that is producing more fouls. “But you never want to foul and get into bonus situations. You never want to be in foul trouble.”

George called in and wanted to know how you “coach or manage a guy who’s been a high school all-star”. JB: “We tell them that you have to work your way in at a new level. Then you can become Trevor Cooney who’s pretty good.”

i only caught those last ten minutes or so where JB was talking about freshman. "you win with veteran guys?
i was thinking to myself man JB's got a short memory.

Obviously his point is that you win as a team and the team benefits greatly from veteran leadership no matter which class its star is in.

Each of the teams that people here consider our all-time best teams, had veteran leadership.

1988-89 - Douglas (Sr.), Thompson (Jr.), Coleman (Jr.)
2002-03 - Duany (Sr.)
2009-10 - Rautins (Sr.), Onuaku (Sr.)
2011-12 - Jardine (Sr.), Joseph (Sr.), Triche (Jr.)
2012-13 - Triche (Sr.), Southerland (Sr.), Fair (Jr.)

Each of our final four teams had senior leadership
86-87 Monroe, Triche
95-96 Sims, Wallace
02-03 Duany
12-13 Triche, Southerland

Consider the 87-88 team, one of our most athletically gifted ever and yet most consider it to have underachieved...flaming out in the NCAAs to Rhode Island, an 11-5 conference record and 8 regular season losses.
