Great write up, as always. JB had some good points and also offered up some of his usual nonsense that fans just aren’t buying anymore. This response is exactly what gets fans so riled up: Josh in Boulder wondered if we could play Marek and Jesse in tandem “with three offensive guys”. JB: We played them together against North Carolina. But Alan and Quincy are so good. They are two of our best players. I’ve had assistant coaches in the past say we should play Jesse for 15 minutes. But that’s 15 minutes we’d have to take away from them – and that excludes Robert Braswell. We’ve got 120 minutes for 3 front court position. We want them, (Marek, Quincy and Alan) to each play 35 minutes with 10 for Braswell. There’s not as many minutes as some people think. People want to cut them back to 30 minutes but will that make us the best team? What if Alan isn’t in the game when he made those 3-4 threes in a row? JB has become the king of the worried what-ifs. He’s become far too risk-averse and cautious in his old age and it’s helped contribute to our mediocrity. Could someone point out the lower mpg averages for superstars like Carmelo and John Wallace including during the 1996 and 2003 tourney runs? We played eight guys consistently in 2003 and 8-9 guys in 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013. Josh Pace, McNeil and Edelin keyed our comeback against Oklahoma State in the second round in 2003 when Carmelo was playing poorly in that first half. What happens if he just kept playing Carmelo during that stretch? Sometimes guys need to sit for psychological reasons (to reset their minds) not just physical rest. When you’re playing poorly and getting overrun by good teams like Virginia, Fla State, Duke, Clemson (this season) on the road, that’s exactly the time to take a risk and look for a spark off the bench or impose the press on the other team. It’s the epitome of a low risk-high reward situation. No shame in losing to those teams on the road, so that’s when you play Jesse, Woody etc more minutes and see what they can give you and press the other team a lot and see if you can get them off balance. Also, how about his comment on having assistant coaches suggesting he play Jesse 15mpg and him dismissing the idea? Do we see what the assistants are dealing with? Not saying JB isn’t often right but he’s also been wrong a lot—and the past few seasons there are clear examples of some miscalculations.
