If Syverud has any business sense (and he has) he will probably look favorably at programs (academic and otherwise) that have demand, can make money or be self-supportive. For the ones that don't, he has to determine if they essential to the school's mission. After that he can prioritize those to expand and those to de-emphasize or eliminate. Anyone that looks at the ACC with an objective view will see expanding revenues and great potential. The biased budget study notwithstanding, SU's national prominence is more widely identified with athletics than academics. That probably drives many insane, but I think it is true. Even one of our most visible programs is heavily related to athletics. Everywhere I go with a logo hat of shirt, someone will say "Go Cuse" or "Go Orange". I have yet to have anyone say " Go Engineering". "Go Whitman" or "Go Maxwell". Facetious? Yes, but you get the point. The biggest bitch from academic departments is that while the football program rebates tuition to the schools its players attend, the surcharge the university charges for overhead (on those athletic related rebates) is not. I think TGC is smart enough to give that concern the weight it deserves (which is de minimis). Recognizing that we are not the Lone Ranger (or even the Dome Ranger anymore), we will be OK and will probably fare as well as everyone else facing a declining student pool.
