Fascinating article in the Chronicle of Higher Education about the lengths to which certain universities will go to try to field a winner on the gridiron. I don't know what to say. You guys be the judge...or those guys who can make it through this rather long article. Somehow I get the feeling that the University of Memphis does things in a way that most ACC schools would not approve of. But who the hell really knows?

I hope the kid makes it to the Pros.

But let's not kid ourselves. If he does struggle through to get a degree, what does that degree signify? What good is it?

The kid seems to have a good heart and wants to do the right thing. But is he really better off in a so-called institution of higher learning (maybe) earning a bogus degree or would he have been better off in a minor/developmental pro league? Maybe if he'd been able to make a few bucks while concentrating full-time on football his potential as an athlete might have been realized.

If nothing else, this is indictment of the public school system. How does a student with a less-than-seventh grade reading aptitude graduate highschool?

We all know the answer to that question. Pass at all costs. Make your numbers. Lift rug, sweep, replace.

Do we know what high school he went to? Many of the private "prep" schools, whose job is to prepare these athletes for college, are in the same category.

I wonder how he was able to clear the SAT/Act hurdle.
