1996 OG: 104 NB: 27 Historical: OG: 2,361 points, 25 victories and 10 rings NB: 1,678 points, 12 victories and 10 rings. The Knicks finished farther behind the Magic with a 47-35 record, but better than 19 teams. The nets still languished at 30-52, better than just 7. The Nets didn’t make the playoffs, but the Knicks did an swept the Cavs before losing to the Bulls in 5 in the quarters for a total of 22 points. The Rangers rebounded to second in the Patrick Division with 41-27-14 (96 points), better than 21 teams. The defending champion devils were 37-33-12 (86), a similar record to the one they had the previous year but only good for 6th place, second to last in a powerful division but still better than 14 teams. The Islanders sunk to last place with a 22-50-10 (54) record, better than just 2 teams. The poor Devils, (poor devils?) didn’t even make the playoffs to defend their championship, even though they were four games better than .500, just as they were the year before. The Rangers beat the Canadians but lost to the Penquins. That gave the Rangers 24 points to the Devils/Islanders 16. The Old Guard was ahead 46-23 going into the summer. And this was the summer the Yankees returned to power, beginning a run that matches and maybe exceeded anything they did in a comparable period in their heyday because these modern Yankees did it in an era of free agency and extended playoffs. Their 1996 record was a modest 92-70, not as good as in 1994, just marginally better than in 1995 when they went out in the quarterfinals and worse than they would have in 1997, when they also lost in the quarters. But it won the 5 team AL East and beat out 25 MLB teams. They beat the Rangers 3-1 in the divisional series, the Orioles 4-1 in the ALCS, (with a little help from Jeffrey Maier) and then faced the defending champion Atlanta Braves in the World Series. The Braves were going through teams like an industrial combine, sweeping the Dodgers and then closing out a 7-game series with the Cardinals with three games they won by a combined 32 runs to 1. They then won the first two games of the World Series against the Yankees by a total of 16-1 before finally dropping game three, 5-2. In game 4 they got off to a 6-0 lead and another rout was on the way. The Braves looked like one of the best reams ever. Two walks and three singles to open the sixth cut the lead in half and then Jim Leyritz hit an improbable, (he’d hit 7 all season), three run homer off of Mark Wohlers, (who’d one thrown a 103 MPH pitch), to tie it in the 8th and the Yankees won it in the 10th, 8-6. That seemed to take all the air out of the Braves’ balloon and put it in the Yankees’, as they won the final two games to win their first World Series in 18 years and earn Pops and Junior2 53 insurmountable points. The Mets were barely a blip on the radar at 71-91, better than 4 teams. The OG was up, 99-27. The Giants and Jets were a couple more blips at 6-10, (better than 5 teams) and 1-15, (better than 0-16 if there was one but there wasn’t), respectively. Final score: OG: 104-27. Jeesh! It was an 8th straight win, (the OG had doubled up the NG, 24-12), and now the rings were tied again, at 10.
