It pretty much dominated Ohio. Thats a decent step 1. I wonder why we never really tried to get that same thing going vs Rutgers.. Hopefull Davis comes back and we take another step forward. This offense and scheme really works best at the faster pace and a running game would help that out.

But the simple things often is what breaks down the success. go back to the first drive.. 1st down then a short run so 2nd and 7. we have a TE and we held in the RB to block at the snape the LT tackle a has a guy. the LG is pulling to someplace. the center has his guy the RG/RT have 1 guy and the RB has no one. all looks good

No we see the end has trying to hold up Benson.. The LG has pulled to take the tackle we doubled the nose. OK.. and we have the rb for the LB.. But what is tucker doing so far out on this play? Still no looking like the play will fail.

1631630568484.png

But Tucker blows the block. he is completely on the wrong shoulder, Servais has no one to block and the center/RG continued the double team.. As to whether the center should have come off the double to help the RB thats all in play design. Maybe they wanted to double the Nose

which leads to the throw off the back foot to avoid the sack. But If Tucker is on the inside shoulder the pressure goes outside the QB and he can step up to a mostly clean pocket. and 3rd and 7 not 3rd and 14.

Still its a bad throw. and there were 2 WRs in the area they just ran the other way after it was released.. Had either turned outside it would have been fine. But I do wonder about the decision for both TE/WRs to turn in on the same play almost next to each other.

A few things I noticed when analyzing all these QB drives the last couple of days. When breakdowns in the line occurred, Tisdale struggled, Tucker struggled and Veterello struggled. Veterello mostly struggled with picking up stunts.

These are also the things I'm seeing in the patterns.

Yup The right side of the line is an issue. Davis upgrade would be a big help if he is really the best run blocker. Stunting has been an issue for awhile now..

Instead of fading backwards he should be side stepping the rusher and moving to his left. His default with any type of pressure is to fade back. That only leads to more problems.

Until we see if Davis improves the level of play its too early to give up on the offense. Not really happy with Servais play at times either. But If davis raised the play at that spot then maybe we dont need to double the DT with the center all the time and that helps the run and passing game. not having a center who can play at a high level really makes most offenses have issues.

Last yr the dline was coming thru in all directions.. its one thing to get beat physically another to get beat mentally. just remove 75% of the physical mistakes is pretty big deal.

The Left side played well. If Davis comes back and steps in as an upgrade thats a pretty big deal.. Right now I think they worry about the C/RG combo and many times they doubled people. but if you can trust the Rg to win more 1-1 battles then the center can do more. The first penalty on grounding.. If they didnt feel they needed to double the DT then the center would have picked up the blitz and Tucker is there for help and who knows how that play goes.

To me we still get way to many plays where the oline is blocking air.. Go back and watch the Taj fumble play. the oline missed a block in space which led to the fumble. clean that up and more plays work.

We also have to remember this line is still a work in progress. Guys have played 2 games together not all the much practice time the last 2 yrs for many of them. like last yr got better I expect this will too and they already so far have played better than last yrs oline did. Rutgers throws alot of stuff at you and for the most part they handled it.

Would love to see Davis get some time this week and be full go next week.

Davis won’t be back until ACC play at the earliest I’m betting

you look at this play and you can see a pretty well timed play. You think if Taj goes right up the numbers and the center makes his block its a TD

1631719252989.png

But Taj gives up on that and makes a nice cut back
The center loses the block and LG instead of looking to make a block on the safety gets caught watching the play. If the safety is blocked TaJ probably gets to the 1st down even with the LB 9 coming off the centers miss.

Looking at the spot it would have been 4th and 1.

we got the ball back and the field flipped got down to 3rd and 14 and ran the screen to Adams.. Jackson whiffs his block and gained 4 and punted.. He makes that block the field is more opan and maybe he gets 8 and we try a FG.

formation penalty. you tell me what this ref sees. Both tackles look the same. And this took away a first down

no formation penalty

again. This needs to get cleaned up.. in what world does this lead to a sack. ^ blockers 4 rushers. The Lbs drop out.. The RE runs a stunt.

1631721274530.png

But communication or mental mistakes by the C/LG. Pocket breaks down athe WRs are 5 yds off the ball on a play that should have had tons of time and no blocker got beat physically. What is the center doing and again Tucker misses his block as the LE also does the same stunt..

1631721392309.png

IF both Tucker and the Center make the correct block or the G/T hand off the stunt Shrader has a clean pocket to step up all the rutgers guys in Zone in the middle would have come up and you would think someone would be open at the sticks..

1631721463921.png

But you tell me what are the WRs doing here. The 3 you can see are not actually doing anything but look to be blocking. I think maybe it was a QB run all the way. If so they the play of the g/t makes even less sense as they need to make sure the tunnel stays in tact and the RB/C can go make blocks?

1631721622842.png

Going deeper into this. Almost every blown line play was a combination of a stunt and the Center and Tucker missing blocks. This si the next series for Shrader. center and Tucker blocking no one. then the stunt happens

1631722721242.png

both guys come thru the middle clean. tucker help clean up the Le and the center doesnt hit either stunt coming thru. 4 man rush beating 6 blockers should not be happening this easy as we are controlling the rush ends

1631722830851.png

One last time.. rinse and repeat 3 man rush right before the half.. Center misses, Tisdale misses Tucker steps up to help Servais which is fine. 4 blockers on 2.. but when 3 of the four fail ... if the c/g combo makes the block Shrader easily gets outside the DE with no pressure. but he makes a nice throw and saves the play. This is the one I dont think TD makes. Pretty clear by now the team is not handling the stunts well.. need to figure that out.

Id have to go back and watch this sequence live but I think it may have been a called QB draw - which would explain why the WRs are blocking. The play gets blown up b/c Vet and Tucker both miss blocks on stunts. I also believe this is the play you have to watch Taj in live action. You won't believe his lack of effort.

yep.. I also noticed and said it multiple times this week in different threads. Almost every blown line play was a combination of a stunt and the Center and Tucker missing blocks.

If i'm the other team, in passing downs, I'm only rushing 4 and throwing the same stunt in until Syracuse cleans it up.

good news is it can get cleaned up, hopefully.. The Center seems to be confused. Tisdale gets beat alot thats were Davis coming back could really help.

On the flip side we used hardly any stunts and we beat the Rutgers oline a ton. What we really just need is a edge rusher, cause we try to scheme our quicker guys out there but they dont have the power to cause a pocket issue as often. Davis was practicing last week and they said he was dressed. if he cant be close to 100% or could regress then dont play him.. really could use him a bit for Liberty. Have to think we may see a change for Tisdale even if its to get a bigger/stronger body in there if we have one.

Thanks for taking the time to show all of these sequences. I found it interesting to see how things break down like this. Great job!

This is how they've been beating us. In watching back. I believe the G's are supposed to come off of their double, and get the Blitzer.(2 guys shouldn't occupy 4 of ours) OTOH, when our T gets inside, because the G is helping the C, they'll just bring that guy outside the T.

What I will say, is that I noticed Bleich handling that duty, fairly well, coming off of his initial block. Communication wise, that was good to see. Overall, it seemed better.

Great job breaking this down to illustrate the issues with the o-line, overall to me they don't seem to bad and have some opportunities to improve. Can't blame them anymore for the poor QB and offensive play.
