We ran into the perfect storm this year.

Our schedule was beyond horrible. A week two bye, Killer row, Teams getting bye weeks prior to playing us. I doubt we will ever have a worse schedule in our lives

Hunt first the punch then the injury.

George AKA the cool kid. Huge mistake one that cost us two games this year and cost us a year of development as i doubt we stick with his O going forward.

Injuries: Hunt, Foy, Morgan, Arc, Swagger beast, Crume, Ash, Bris, Miller, Trudo, Robinson, and on and on and on. Never have i seen this many key injuries and for so long. It is like a mash unit out there.

If we played the same teams but with a different mix. Lets say Nova, Maryland, CMU, BC, ND, Wake, FSU, Pitt, NCS, Clemson, Duke, with a bye after ND and if Hunt didnt throw the punch and get hurt and if we only had half the injuries i could see this team winning 7 games with a solid win against ND and possibly Clemson. But no we had a schedule made in hell, Injuries beyond anything i have ever seen and an OC who was green at best.

I truly think that we are on a solid path and that we can keep this staff with the exception of one or two coaches together. I expect us to win 2 out of the next three games and come up just short.

We got caught in a perfect storm this year. Lets hope that going forward the scheduling and Injury Gods are better to us.

hope you're right, good perspective to read and post. Except the part about winning 2 of the next three. Just not seeing it. Maybe one (Pitt). Maybe.

That movie is on TNT right now for any late nighters.

You're welcome.

Can't knock ya for staying positive, we'll pretend it was just the perfect storm and not some serious issues that may just linger a bit.

I think that all of these issues cost us two games. I believe that we beat Maryland and NC state for sure and possibly beat one of the big 4 if we had a different schedule, Lester from day 1, just a few injuries... I think we have 5 wins at this point for sure.

I have no idea what Lester will do with the offense if he retains the OC job next year, but I would expect at least a good amount of what's in the playbook will stay as its in everybody's playbook around college. The spread wr screens, jet sweeps, zone read

If our w-l was reversed, would we have reasons for winning? Would we be able to point to a list of things (some we control and some we don't - injuries to opposing players, etc) that contributed to our wins?

Why do the reasons for a loss (some we control, some we don't) somehow become excuses?

It's easy to "hold the team accountable" and demand more talent and better coaches - but that's only half the story.

It's not that - I'm not demanding more talent or different coaches, I'm frustrated.
It's the fact that the same things have been said for way too many years, it's systemic and not something with a single, simple answer.

It's the same old story, same old song and dance my friend.

We ran into the perfect storm this year.

I totally agree.

A week two bye, a rough midseason schedule and:

- losing our first two QBs
- losing two+ (Broyld, Estime and the plus being Lewis) at WR
- Losing Morgan, not having Raymon for first half (and now more)
- Injuries that sidelined 80% of our starting OL yesterday (and plenty before that)
- Change at OC, and not a smooth one
- Hell, we are on our second-strong play-by-play announcer

happens. This wasn't the hard-nosed, grind out a 7-5 year we were looking at. Really focused on 2015 when healthiness returns, McDonald is gone and I suspect some tweaks to the coaching staff (e.g. dedicated ST coach) occur.

It sucks. As a fan, hate seeing us lose. But on paper, wow...we in fact should be. Next man up can't refer to almost the entire offensive line and QBs.

I suspect next year is *THE* defining year. Especially under a new athletic director for Shafer & Co.

Go Orange.

Another comment about us having a new AD next year. We shall see. We definitely have had a ton go wrong this year. That being said, next year will be a huge challenge. 4 automatic losses to LSU, FSU, Ville and Clemson and we lose a ton of defensive starters. Gotta find some playmakers. I don't think Broyld is one. Estime could be but he can't stay on the field. Ishmael is exciting and Strickland could be a star early on. Lots of issues to resolve that go beyond the bad luck/tough schedule of this year.

those 4 games aren't definant losses. LSU is but who knows how good fsu will be with new qb next year, Louisville will be Louisville ,Clemson will be tough as always but its at home next year so you never know we could go 1-3 in those games

I don't know Chris. I think beating FSU in Talahassee is out of the realm of reality no matter who their QB is. Clemson will have Watson back I just don't see us beating them either. Hope I am wrong, believe me

Since this post the Perfect storm turned into an even greater storm. AJ going down, Hodge, more OL injuries, and on and on. I believe that we will be much improved next year for a few reasons. First of all we are going to have a much better O out of the box. George decided he wanted to run the UCLA O which on paper is fine but he didnt have the personel nor did he have a staff that knew how to coach it. Add in the fact that he has a difficult time with play calling and we were off to a bad start. After that we had the schedule from heck with an ambush of injuries. I expect us to win 7 next year and i also expect us to look like an O that is organized and has a plan. The QB is going to be Hunt or AJ unless Mr. Florida takes the field by storm. Either way i doubt we ever see this combination of bad luck again. Having watched Syracuse football since 62 there isnt much i havent seen. Lets win the last two , close out a solid recruiting class, and add a solid O coach or two.

Not sure about coach Shafer at this point and i really have pulled for him from day one to the point i wrote a letter and had a conversation with Doc about it. He may be in over his head still with all of the injuries and a schedule that would challange an SEC team he deserves next year to right the ship.

If we play our schedule fully healthy, and every opponent is fully healthy, we still have 3 wins.

I dont agree i also think our O was an issue given the fact that it was so geared towards Hunt. Still i think we would have won six this year NCS, Maryland, and either Pitt, ND, or BC

we lost to Maryland and ND with hunt

Huhhh...Pitt? The same team that just buried us? I guess we've officially come full circle on Hunt.

Also Hunt played against Maryland and ND?

the perfect storm analogy. screw the injuries. they happen.
don't wanna hear why my boat is upside down when we're already drowning . but rather how to correct this situation.
clearly changes need to be made if we are remain at least competitive. and this starts at the top and trickles down.

I know that he played but we also had an OC who was in over his head. It may be a stretch but i think we could have won six this year. This year really hurts as i as well as many felt like we had started to turn the corner. I was expecting 7

So first it's because hunt wasn't able to play, then reminded he did play those games and all of a sudden it's the offensive coordinator? Not surprised, how most people on this board have been rationalizing things all year.

read my opening post it is a combination of things.
