It was 3rd and 21. Gulley picked up 16 to put them at the 37. I assume it was some draw, I don't remember

If you're not willing to go for it on 4th and 5 there and prefer a 27 yard punt, why run the ball on third down? Just lob it up to west on third down, who cares if a jump ball gets picked

If you're going to be a stupid meathead on 4th down, plan accordingly

It's like they don't really think anything through. Run the draw to avoid a turnover down field and then punt so you can have a turnover downfield

Someone actually asked Shafer why not throw the ball up on 3rd and long and hope for the catch or PI, because you're just going to punt anyway.

He said he prefers to save his Hail Marys for church and the end of the game. If he was asked to be more serious, I'd bet he'd say we want to pin them down deep and then force a turnover. Because statistically, that's a slam dunk that kicking an oblong pointy ball will land just where you want it to, and turnovers happen all the time.

He should start paying attention to how his WRs do when the football is in the air. They seem pretty good at catching it.

3/4 of our passing offense is throwing it to west covered, let him push the guy, then make a great catch falling on his back.

dixon would've been better off not having picked up those junk yards on 3rd down. he wouldn't have had to baby a 27 yard kick

How far can Dixon throw? Could he lob it like 45 yards? I'm thinking from those types of places on the field we put him in normal punt formation, maybe with a couple of extra gunners, and he just heaves it down field towards the end zone after the long snap. If we catch it, awesome. If they catch it, well, they're idiots. If it falls incomplete, we're not giving them great field position anyway. Just don't kick the ball and the distance he's back there should make sure he doesn't get sacked.

This really should be an option.

I was VERY VERY VOCAL on twitter about the ridiculous decision. There is no explanation for it in any way shape or form.

That being said, the net 27 yard punt was close to best case scenario which makes the decision to punt even funnier.

The play on 3rd down was fine. The decision to punt was the worst coaching move I have seen since running up the middle on the 10, 5, 7 and then throwing a fade from the 6 on the #1 team in the country in consecutive plays. While having the opportunity to make it a 2 possession game AND getting the ball back in the 2nd half.

oh and the double reverse flea flicker that took an hour to set up was pretty questionable too.

In the chat room I made a post about how you were digging for the stats about punting in opposition territory as soon as the decision was made to punt.

Figured you loved the decision. Not.

I like the Dixon qb vs that type of defense thing for a couple of yards. Seize the opportunity if it's there but I agree the punt...yikes. The offensive woes have punched Shafer in the gut.

that was an absolute terrible decision. i like shafer. he shouldn't get too much heat over one decision. but it was so bad, it really makes me wonder.

there are more where that came from

4th and 2 at MD 46 down 18 is the dumbest thing i've ever seen. and i watch a 3 year old invent new ways to fall on his face 100 times a day so that's saying somethign

What it shows is that SS and TL had given up on the series, and when faced with new information suggesting that they shouldn't give up on the series, they ignored it and gave up anyway.

Quite an intelligent want to work.

The game moves too fast for these guys at this point.

BUT YOU GOTTA WIN THE TURNOVER BATTLE
